April Marketing Tip: Testing to Improve Open Rates

With all the emails that consumers receive, standing out in their inbox is more important than ever.
Trying different subject line approaches is one way to try and improve open rates. For example, you can try a longer vs shorter subject line, a question vs a statement, all capitalized words vs. a sentence, including a readers’ first name or not, and so on.
In Constant Contact, you can A/B test subject lines easily. When you get to the send page, turn on the A/B Test option. You can add multiple subject lines and change the percentage of recipients for each. Constant Contact will then declare a winner of the two after a specified amount of time.
When thinking about open rates while drafting your email, do not overlook the preheader field. This is the text that appears in readers’ inboxes right after the subject line. This is supportive text that can really help encourage readers to open your email.
If after testing, your open rates are still not where you want them to be, look at how frequently you are emailing your readers, and consider segmentation. If you are sending too frequently, your emails may be going to SPAM or getting ignored. If the content of your email is not relevant to them, they won’t open it, so you may need to look into how you can better target your email lists through segmentation.

If your chapter is interested in hosting recorded webinars on the chapter site, we recommend storing webinar recordings on YouTube as an unlisted video. You can do this by downloading your recording and transcript from Zoom and uploading it to your chapter's YouTube account, and marking it as "unlisted."
- If your chapter has a YouTube account, please add marketing@score.org as a Manager to ensure consistency in branding and help with access questions if there is volunteer turnover.
- If your chapter does not have a YouTube account, email marketing@score.org and we will create a channel for you.
