Tips for Protecting Plants from Excessive Heat

As much as humans need to be hydrated and spend time in the shade during hot weather, so do our plants. With the upcoming heat wave in the forecast, a bit of prevention and awareness now and during this heat spell can help your plants through.

Container plants may need an extra watering or two in the coming days. Water them well before 9am or after 8pm. If you have the option, move container plants into shadier areas for a few days; it will help.

Even when well-watered, some plants will wilt in times of heat. Giving them additional water won’t necessarily change that, though offering some shade may. Most plants will recover overnight as temperatures decrease. Well established landscapes will generally be fine but keep an eye out for wilt or stress. Again, early or late watering will be better for landscape plants and limit evaporation.
