Today is the perfect day to step outside, enjoy the fresh air, connect with nature and give thanks to our trees. Trees at Miami Beach are a defining and valued feature, recognized for the important contribution they provide in mitigating the effects of climate change.

By 2040, Miami Beach strives to have a 22% tree canopy cover; you can read more about upcoming plans involving trees in the Miami Beach Urban Forestry Master Plan.

Here Are 10 Ways Trees Are Amazing:

  1. Combating climate change by removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
  2. Providing the oxygen needed to breathe.
  3. Protecting from ultra-violet radiation.
  4. Cooling urban environments and making summers feel cooler.
  5. Preventing water pollution.
  6. Preventing soil erosion.
  7. Providing food.
  8. Conserving energy by reducing energy demands for cooling a building.
  9. Creating business opportunities.
  10. Increasing property value.

Heritage Tree Designation

The city has developed a special program in recognition of the intrinsic value that heritage trees provide to the community. The program not only helps preserve iconic trees but also assists in the future management through subsidized maintenance cost.

Have your tree designated as a Heritage Tree today.

Commemorative Tree Program

The Commemorative Tree Program provides a unique way for residents and visitors to commemorate a special event, memory or loved one.

Through this program, participants can donate a tree that will contribute to the enhancement of urban forests, improve species diversity and increase the tree canopy.

Miami Beach Urban Forestry Masterplan

The City of Miami Beach developed its first Urban Forest Masterplan to provide a strategic framework to guide the city in managing, maintaining, planting and preserving its urban forest. The masterplan will help our city develop a shared vision of the potential for trees to contribute to overall green infrastructure.

Environment & Sustainability's Favorite Trees

Earth Month Newsletter Pictures.png

Red Mangrove

Rhizophora mangle

"My favorite tree is the red mangrove because of its ability to provide 'green' infrastructure by preventing erosion and absorbing storm surge impacts. Dense mangrove clusters also capture massive amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, storing them in their inundated soils."

-Lindsey Precht

Assistant Director

Bahamian Trumpet

Tabebuia bahamensis

"My Favorite tree is the Bahamian Trumpet. It's a small drought-tolerant evergreen with little white flowers in the spring and summer and it grows up to 25-feet."

Gumbo Limbo

Bursera simaruba

"My favorite tree is the Gumbo Limbo because of its unique photosynthetic bark. The tree is also endearingly known as the tourist tree due to its flakey bark, making it look similar to a Miami Beach tourist with peeling skin from staying out in the sun too long."
