Titan Tips and Tricks
Staying Healthy on Campus
|
Living in a residential community means more opportunities to connect and, unfortunately, to share germs. IMSA students are not immune to seasonal illnesses like the cold and flu, but we do have processes in place to help mitigate the spread. IMSA’s maintenance team disinfects high-touch areas several times a day, and hand sanitizer stations are located throughout campus. Students are encouraged to wash their hands frequently, not share food or drink, get adequate rest, and see the nurse if they are experiencing cold or flu symptoms. If symptoms worsen, the nurse may recommend heading home to rest, and staff will work with families to coordinate care and lessen the spread of germs until pickup.
It’s also recommended that students keep a small health kit in their rooms for minor issues that don’t require a nurse visit. Stock up on over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen, allergy meds, and cold/flu relief, plus essentials like tissues, bandages, and cough drops. Here's a full list of suggested items that students can keep in their rooms. A little preparation can go a long way in keeping you comfortable and healthy during the busy school year!
If you have questions about staying healthy on campus or how to properly turn in and store prescription medication, we invite you to visit the Health Services Webpage.

Angie Shoener BSN, RN, PEL-CSN
Coordinator of Student Health Services
Nurse Angie is the Coordinator of Student Health Services. She provides well-rounded nursing care that supports students’ physical health, learning, emotional well-being, and mental wellness. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, along with her School Nurse Certification and Professional Educator License, from the University of Illinois at Chicago. With over 25 years of nursing experience, she has dedicated the last 11 years to serving as the school nurse at IMSA.
In January 2024, Nurse Angie launched IMSA’s Certified Nursing Assistant Program, where she serves as both Coordinator and Instructor. Her passion for experiential learning led her and three IMSA students to Panama in June 2024, where they provided 50 hours of medical and dental care in rural communities, supporting the United Nations' Sustainability Goal of good health and well-being. Earlier this summer, she led another group of students on the second annual Medical Mission trip to Greece.
Additionally, Nurse Angie advises the Titan Astronomical Society and HOSA-Future Health Professionals. Whether you have an interest in space or a passion for health, Nurse Angie is always available for a conversation in the Health Office, located between security and the cafeteria.
Nurse Angie also hosted a Q&A session for incoming students and parents earlier this summer. If you missed it or have questions about health services at IMSA, you can watch the recording below!

In the 2023-2024 academic year, IMSA introduced the opportunity for students to gain the Certified Nursing Assistant certification. These students took additional training to jumpstart their medical experience in the hopes of continuing in medical studies.
With their CNA, students can help patients with daily activities like eating or moving, monitor their vital signs, and receive foundational knowledge in patient care.
The CNA program gives invaluable hands-on experience to students interested in pursuing advanced medical training.
| | IMSA's inagural CNA Class in 2024 | | IMSA’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter had an impressive showing at the State Leadership Competition in Springfield this spring, with 21 IMSA students placing in the top 3 of their events. They competed in academic events covering topics such as Behavioral Health, Biomedical Debate, EMT, Epidemiology, Medical Math, and Pathophysiology. Several students advanced to the International Leadership Convention in Nashville. | |
