A New Frontier

A few weeks ago, IMSA unveiled the new Launch AI Center and Frontier Lab for student and faculty exploration into Artificial Intelligence. These new spaces will serve as resource centers, meeting spaces, and technology playgrounds for those wishing to learn more about AI. The spaces include a computer lab loaded with AI programming for student use and meeting spaces for collaboration. An AI Lab Manager will be available to assist students in enhancing their research and entrepreneurial efforts with AI in ways that help solve problems and create solutions to advance the human condition.

Throughout this last year, our AI Team has also hosted informational workshops for students and faculty called AI Bytes. These sessions were recorded as resources for anyone looking to start their exploration into the exciting world of AI

Did You Know?

The AI Center just opened, but IMSA has already started integrating AI into the classroom. Computer science classes are already working with AI, designing chatbots, and exploring uses for AI in web design. Students in the Student Inquiry and Research program are working with Argonne National Laboratory to explore the applications of AI in numerous fields.

Even IMSA's art classes have integrated new technology into their curriculum. Most of the art pieces used to decorate the new Launch AI Lab and Frontier Lab were created by students in the Graphic Design and Technology class using AI art generators. Students took an original image, like a photograph, and used generative AI tools to change and customize it, creating a brand-new piece of art.

As new uses for AI are discovered, IMSA is eager to be at the forefront of this new technology while still working to promote ethical considerations in AI research and development.

Meet Jayram

Jayram Palamadai, a rising senior at IMSA, was invited to speak at the 2024 Python Developers Conference to present his research in AI. In his presentation "Decoding Algorithmic Artistry: Navigating the Technical Landscape of Visual Generative AI," he discussed diffusion-based text-to-3D scene generation through direct voxel grid optimization. In simpler terms, he is working to develop software capable of producing fully interactive 3D scenes based on textual prompts. As Jayram heads into his senior year, we are excited to see where his research, along with the research of his peers, develops with the new AI resources at IMSA.

Where will your IMSA Odyssey take you?
