Showing Thanks for the Holidays

While many students and families have meaningful December traditions centered around gift giving to express their appreciation for faculty and staff, IMSA employees are unable to accept gifts due to the State of Illinois Ethics Act and IMSA’s Ban on Receipt of Gifts Policy.

In lieu of gifts, we invite families to share a note or card of appreciation to recognize the IMSA educators and staff members who make a difference. We encourage families and students to consider sharing their gratitude through a written message recognizing the care, guidance, and support our faculty and staff provide throughout the year.

These notes can also be sent to IMSA colleagues, parents, or other students as words of encouragement as we head into the end of the semester. Use the link below to send a note of thanks to spread winter cheer.

Spotlights and Good News

Staff and Student Spotlight

This week, we highlight IMSA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Unity (DEIU) Leadership Team, a group of faculty, staff, and students led by Dr. Adrienne Coleman, who guide the implementation of our Equity and Excellence 2.0 Plan and serve as DEI Ambassadors across campus.

In addition to advancing the plan’s four pillars below, the team also provides meaningful, ongoing input to identify areas where IMSA may need to pivot, enhance support, or adjust strategies to better meet student and community needs.

  • An Inclusive and Unified Culture
  • A Diverse and Culturally Competent Faculty and Staff
  • Student Belonging and Safety
  • Equity and Access to STEM Statewide

They will help celebrate the plan's progress through a public Website and Equity and Excellence Dashboard, ensuring transparency and elevating the voices and experiences of our community.

We appreciate the leadership of the following students, faculty, and staff in fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering environment for all IMSA students.

Community Safety Spotlight

We would also like to recognize Joey Stein ’28 for his calm, quick-thinking actions during the small fire that occurred just before Thanksgiving Break. Upon recognizing the situation, Joey promptly pulled the fire alarm, helping ensure the building was safely evacuated and that the appropriate emergency response could take place.

We are deeply grateful to Joey and to the many members of our community, students and staff alike, who stepped in to assist during the situation. Their awareness, responsibility, and teamwork helped keep everyone safe and reflect the strong sense of care that defines our IMSA community.

IMSA Sophomores Put AI Ethics to the Test

Sophomores in Dr. Mohan and Ms. Kumar’s CSI class dug into AI Ethics the week of December 8 with guest lecturer Dr. Lee Eysturlid. They analyzed AI companies’ ethics statements through three schools of moral philosophy (Kantian deontology, utilitarianism, and Rawlsian contractualism). This unit reflects one of IMSA’s AI goals this year: ensuring AI literacy is accessible to all IMSA students.

IMSA Fund Scavenger Hunt

Last week, the Student Philanthropy Network (SPN) hosted a scavenger hunt highlighting various campus areas and resources provided through the IMSA Fund. Students followed clues to various locations to learn just how impactful the IMSA Fund is to daily life at IMSA.

Message from the President

Exploring the Unknown

I love that IMSA promotes access to emerging areas that are important to humanity. Our IMSA 2033 vision endorses a priority to understand, adapt, and lead using artificial intelligence through research, entrepreneurship, ethics, and education applications. You can read about some of our recent efforts on our IMSA 2033 website.

Quantum information science is another emerging field that has extraordinary potential in many fields. The state of Illinois has invested $500 million to build a quantum microelectronics park in Chicago, and I hope IMSA students will be part of it. Before its development, we are engaging professionals and introducing students to the field. Just this past week, I joined a team of students and colleagues at a symposium hosted by Fermilab, titled Exploring the Quantum Universe. It was wonderful to connect and learn from researchers on the important questions they are exploring in government labs, universities, and industry. Our very own students, Aditya Tiwari '26 and Amit Prakash '27, shared their research in a poster session. I feel grateful IMSA can be part of creating pathways of innovation, and I look forward to learning about their meaningful discoveries.

Whether you are a student, staff member, or parent, we welcome any special items, talents, or experiences you'd like to offer. Donations can be just about anything, so feel free to be creative. All proceeds from the Senior Auction will directly support our Senior Prom.
