Summer Coursework in Mathematics

mathmatics giphy image

As summer approaches, some students may choose to use the break to take an additional math course. While this is not expected, it may be an option for those interested in exploring topics not offered at IMSA or accelerating their progress through the IMSA mathematics core (Geometry, Mathematical Investigations, and Calculus).

Any math course taken over the summer for the intention of potentially advancing through the IMSA mathematics core must be pre-approved by the IMSA mathematics department. Please read the letter linked below, which contains a link to the Summer Mathematics Course Request Form. This form, which requires a syllabus of the course for which you seek approval, is due no later than Friday, May 1, 2026 @ 11:59 p.m.

Also included is a list of Topics in Core Courses for mathematics, which may help guide your selection of non-IMSA summer courses.

Learning from Student Research and Internships

This Wednesday, we are hosting IMSAloquium, which is our annual celebration of student research and internship projects. It's a great way to understand our students' transformation work and how they push boundaries with their mentors at over 25 different institutions. We are incredibly grateful for the guidance that our mentors provide, as well as the organizational efforts made by our IN2 and SIR teams. Take a look at the breadth and depth of our students' work this year.

IMSAloquium is a great way for students to learn from one another. They can attend sessions and visit posters in subject areas that interest them, support their friends, and also learn how they might get connected to a potential mentor. It's a great way to think about potential research opportunities for next year. I'm so grateful for our connections with research institutions and universities so that our students can make innovative and meaningful contributions through their work.

Parent Support Needed

Casa de Alma

Alma Latina, IMSA’s Hispanic and Latin American cultural club, celebrates their heritage through events like our yearly show, Casa de Alma, which strives to erase misconceptions and uplift the community. This year's themed show is Casa Del Barrio. The student show takes place on April 24 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., with the dinner reception to follow in the cafeteria, and the family show is on Saturday, April 25, at 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The student reception dinners after the shows are a time to celebrate the culture's cuisine and connect with fellow students. Alma is looking for parent volunteers as well as food and monetary donations to help make this year’s Casa Del Barrio reception a celebration of the Hispanic and Latin cultures. Please consider helping by donating your food, time, or funds for the student reception.

Please include a completed Meal Content Form with all food donations.

Spotlights and Good News

Student Spotlight

Alexander Walker '27 has taken the initiative to enrich the IMSA community by overseeing two bulletin boards in the Writing Center, creating a space to highlight campus resources, as well as influential historical figures and their impact on society.

He began the project in February during Black History Month, featuring the landmark Loving v. Virginia case, a 1967 Supreme Court decision that struck down bans on interracial marriage and affirmed the constitutional right to marry regardless of race, following the advocacy of Richard and Mildred Loving. He also highlighted Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, an African American physician and pioneer in cardiac surgery, who founded Chicago’s Provident Hospital in 1893 as the nation’s first non-segregated hospital.

For Women's History Month, Alexander highlighted Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in science for her work in radioactivity, and Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and activist best known for her powerful speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?”

We thank Alexander for his initiative and commitment to enhancing the learning space and introducing community members to these influential figures. Make sure to stop by the Writing Center to see who is featured this month!

Staff Spotlight

Dr. Ashwin Mohan, Computer Science faculty, recently served as an online guest lecturer for the MATLAB STEM Outreach Group, an initiative designed to expand access to science and engineering education by providing students and educators worldwide with free MATLAB/Simulink resources, including software, courseware, and workshops.

During his session, Dr. Mohan highlighted how IMSA integrates MATLAB into the computer science curriculum and showcased a range of student projects, demonstrating the creativity and innovation our students bring to their work with the software.

Interfaith Read-In

Thank you to Rev. Daphne Cody and attorney Azam Nizamuddin for joining us as guest speakers at the 3rd Annual Interfaith Event at IMSA. The Interfaith Read-In was an IRC, DEI, MSA, ISA and CCE initiative

Both speakers shared how their respective faiths have shaped their daily lives and personal experiences. They also engaged with the audience by answering questions from individuals of diverse backgrounds, fostering an open and respectful dialogue. The event was well attended by both students and staff, with meaningful conversations about different faith traditions and perspectives.

Medical Fair

IMSA's Medical Society hosted their Medical Fair, where students presented their year-long research projects to an audience of healthcare professionals, parents, faculty, and peers. Students had the opportunity to complete these projects under the guidance of physicians, gaining a firsthand glimpse into the daily work of healthcare professionals while exploring medical questions that interested them.

"Surgeon on the Edge" Book Release

The IRC hosted a book release and speaking event for Women's History Month that featured Dr. Francis Mei Hardin. After graduating from IMSA in 2008, Dr. Francis Mei Hardin went on to become a surgeon. In her new book, "Surgeon on the Edge," she discusses her experience, including the cost of becoming a surgeon and the even greater cost of leaving.

She also talked about her experience as an IMSA student and how it has helped her navigate through many spaces even today.

Michael Keyton Scholarship for Mathematics

A black and white picture of a man with grey hair, a mustache and glasses laughs at a banquet table while wearing a tuxedo

Dr. Michael Keyton, a mathematician, musicologist, and professional golfer, made a lasting impact during his time as a member of the math faculty at IMSA. Through his wisdom, kindness, and passion for teaching, he helped inspire his students to believe in themselves and in what they could accomplish. Each year, a scholarship is awarded to honor his legacy by supporting future generations of students.

This year, the scholarship will award $800 to an IMSA senior pursuing an education or career in mathematics (a math minor is also eligible). Ideal candidates include students planning to become math teachers and those with financial need (not required). Applicants must be enrolling in an accredited college or university after graduation.

The deadline to apply is Friday, April 24, 2026.
