Book Release and Reading
Resisting Nazism by Dr. Luke Berryman
Thursday, January 22, 2026
2:00 p.m. (During S&E)
IRC

Please join us for the official publication launch and book reading of Resisting Nazism by Dr. Luke Berryman. Dr. Berryman, Director of Experiential Learning at IMSA, will share from his newly published work and discuss its themes and significance.
Nazism has always faced resistance: from the German artists who caricatured the Nazis in the 1920s, or the man who infiltrated the SS to try and expose the Holocaust in the 1940s, or the people who uncovered former Nazis as part of a groundbreaking documentary in the 1970s. Resisting Nazism is the first book to connect such stories, painting a vivid picture of resistance to hatred and extremism across the generations.
Built on original interviews with the people involved, their families, and their colleagues, as well as deep research, this book is a response to far-right populist threats and antisemitism that increasingly resemble the Nazi past. Each of its twelve chapters tells a different story of resistance. Sometimes, these stories involve incredible daring and enormous risk – but they also show that resistance can begin with something as simple as writing your ideas down or showing solidarity with the oppressed.

Tyler Rush '26 and Axel Aguilar '26 demonstrated outstanding leadership and vision as the student coordinators of One Dream, Many Voices: Uplifting Black and Brown Excellence, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, sponsored by ODEI and BHSC and featuring Poetic Justice. Through their thoughtful planning and collaboration, Tyler and Axel helped shape a powerful program that honored Dr. King’s legacy while centering Black and Brown voices through music, reflection, performance, and dialogue; from the moving opening of Lift Every Voice and Sing by the IMSA Chamber Choir to the impactful Black and Latino Excellence alumni video and panel.
Adding to the program’s depth and creativity, Darrell McGee '26 wrote and contributed an original play highlighting Black and Brown contributions to society, reinforcing the program’s theme that excellence is rooted in both history and lived experience. Together, Tyler, Axel, and Darrell exemplified student leadership, artistry, and commitment to equity by creating a meaningful space for learning, celebration, and community reflection.

Global Medical Squad in Belize
During Intersession, IMSA students participated in a Global Medical Squad, providing primary health care services to under-resourced communities with limited access to medical care in Belize. Across clinic days, students observed nearly 200 medical visits, 60 dental visits, and 5 home visits, gaining firsthand insight into community-based health care delivery. Working alongside physicians, students assisted with triage, shadowed patient consults, supported pharmacy operations, led education workshops, and screened patients. The experience concluded with cultural experiences, including snorkeling at the world’s second-largest barrier reef and touring historic Mayan ruins.

Paris and London: A Study in Culture, History, the Arts, and Food
IMSA students traveled to Paris and London for an immersive experience filled with history, culture, and iconic landmarks. In Paris, highlights included visits to Versailles, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Catacombs, the Champs-Élysées, and the Musée d’Orsay. The group then continued to London, where students viewed the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, visited Stephen Hawking’s memorial at Westminster Abbey, enjoyed live theatre, and took part in a Great British Bake Off–style experience. Each day was packed with memorable sites and hands-on cultural exploration.

Language Immersion in Paris
Another group of IMSA students traveled to Paris for an immersive academic and cultural experience integrated into the French curriculum. Designed for students in French Levels 3, 4, and 5, the trip broadened and deepened their understanding of the French language through authentic, real-world engagement. Through a special collaboration with Lycée Chaptal, students attended morning classes alongside their Parisian pen pals, learning and communicating in French in everyday academic settings.
The experience offered a meaningful window into daily French life while helping students build friendships with their international peers. Afternoons were dedicated to exploring Paris’s iconic historical landmarks, further extending learning beyond the classroom. Merci beaucoup to the teachers at Lycée Chaptal for helping facilitate this incredible opportunity for our students!

Intersession and
Next Year's Proposed Calendar
| |
Intersession is a wonderful time to learn about a unique area of study or personal interest, or to participate in an excursion. In recent years, Intersession has been expanded to two weeks to offer more experiential learning opportunities and to give some students a chance to recover from a setback during the first semester. Last year, we proposed an end-of-year Intersession. However, there were concerns about conflicts with APs, the ability to participate in some competitions, and a perceived decline in interest at that time of year. I don’t think our goals have been met, so it’s time to pivot with a different approach going into next year, keeping the same intentions in mind.
This week, we will propose a renewed concept for Intersession at our January Board meeting. Starting next year, we intend to move it back to a one-week experience as we have done in the past, and also open additional options throughout the year, whether that’s during fall break, the first week after winter break, during spring break, or at the end of the academic year. Here's the proposed calendar. The Intersession experience during breaks would likely be remote, such as an online course or a special trip. Students would have a choice about the week they'd like to participate in Intersession and could participate in more than one Intersession experience, as space permits.
Additionally, with our intended goals in mind, an optional June term will be created to support SRELO (summer research and internships) and academic options (summer school) for our students, as well as allowing additional students throughout the state to experience a program at IMSA. Please reach out to Principal and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Angela Rowley (arowley@imsa.edu), to learn more about next year's academic calendar.
