Important Updates

Student Medications

Students must turn all prescription medications taken by mouth into the Health Office. When turning in medications, the following forms also need to be completed:

  • A signed medication authorization form completed by the physician must be submitted for new medications, dose changes, and medication discontinuation at the start of every school year. The student and parent/guardian only need to sign this form once per year.
  • drop-off receipt form must be completed every time the Health Office is given a supply of medications.

Medications should be turned in or picked up by an adult. The only exceptions are for students riding the downstate bus and students who pick up their refills at a local pharmacy. Medication procedures and helpful tips can be found here

Students may keep prescription topical, nasal, ear, or eye, and emergency medications such as inhalers, EpiPens, or insulin in their possession. Students may also keep any over-the-counter medication in their room for self-administration.

ALL medications should be in their original packaging. Packaging should not exceed 100 doses.

Winter Health and Safety Reminders

Cold Weather Attire

As a reminder, according to the student-parent handbook, students must have their arms, legs, and feet covered when outdoor temperatures are below 32 degrees. Blankets may not be used in the Main Building. Shoes must be worn at all times, except in the student's room. Students should also consider wearing a hat, gloves, and a scarf when walking between the halls and the Main Building.

Illness Prevention

Illinois has seen an increase in respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses over the last few weeks. For ways to reduce your chances of developing these winter illnesses, consider these tips:

  1. Boost Immunity: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and stay hydrated.
  2. Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
  3. Vaccinate: Get a flu and COVID-19 vaccine.
  4. Stay Warm: Dress in layers and remember to wear a hat and gloves.
  5. Sleep Well: Aim for 7-8 hours to support immune function.
  6. Exercise: Regular physical activity strengthens immunity.
  7. Avoid Crowds: Reduce exposure during peak cold and flu season.
  8. Wear a mask if you are sick or are near someone else who is sick.
  9. Clean the air: Use a HEPA air purifier to reduce viruses and bacteria in the air.

Ms. Kavithaa Suresh Kumar, a Computer Science Faculty member, recently conducted a workshop at Oakton College through their Futures Unlimited program. Over 500 middle school girls from the north and northwest suburbs attended this opportunity to learn more about coding and computer science. Ms. Kumar's session taught the students about Cutebot, a programmable smart car designed to teach beginners about robotics, coding, and electronics.

A Time For Exploration

Intersession will be held January 6-17 between semesters to promote more experiential learning opportunities for our students. IMSA faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and students are involved in facilitating inquiry-based, exploratory, and engaging experiences. See the travel opportunities and catalog of virtual and on-campus opportunities. It's a great way to involve our entire community in creating learning experiences for our students.

This year, I will be co-facilitating an intersession trip with Dr. Carlson to New York City. His MSI class collaborated with students from the Bronx School of Science on a research project, and we will spend a day sharing our results and visiting their Manne Research Institute. As a former New Yorker, it'll be a fun way for me to introduce our students to service, culture, and the sites. In addition, we'll be connecting with seven IMSA alumni with careers in New York, so it will be a nice way for our students to realize future possibilities.

Whatever our students do during intersession, on campus or afar, I hope they walk away with a sense of joy and inspiration.
