Problem of the Week

Presented by Mu Alpha Theta

Problem of the Week is a new initiative by Mu Alpha Theta that releases problems to broaden your knowledge of mathematical concepts. It encourages students to develop their critical thinking skills as well as be creative in math. Done consistently, students can gain an understanding of higher-level concepts in mathematics and give them a head start in their classes. Participating in Problem of the Week can help students apply the concepts that they’ve learned in creative ways.

Elevating Impact: IMSA's Academic Credentials

At our recent Board meetings, our Principal and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Angela Rowley, introduced the desire to offer academic credentials at IMSA. A credential is an opportunity to demonstrate competency in a professional skill, such as research, entrepreneurship, leadership, and much more. They can be introductory (level 1), applied with a mentor (level 2), and professional excellence (level 3). We aspire to create additional pathways to earn an IMSA diploma, not solely by course credits, and make IMSA more accessible to students throughout the state in a non-residential capacity. Learn more in our November and January presentation slide decks and the academic pathways in our IMSA Vision 2033.

We are still in the early phases of developing credentials. Examples include an artificial intelligence credential that we began piloting during Intersession. This spring, we also plan on developing a research credential for students around the state of Illinois so they can have the prerequisite skills to engage in a summer research program alongside IMSA students. This semester, we intend to engage IMSA students further about where and how credentials might support their interests and development so they can experience IMSA in distinctive ways. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me (eglazer@imsa.edu) or Dr. Rowley (arowley@imsa.edu) if you have ideas or connections that will advance our vision.

Triston's Tips and Tricks

Starting the Semester Strong

Coming back and trying to start your second semester strong can often be a difficult task. However, starting on a good note is important for long-term success. Here are some tips for how you can get into a mindset to set yourself up for success:

  • Work towards establishing a routine – Getting back in the swing of things and finding your routine again is important. It can help you feel more prepared and comfortable with the tasks you need to do.
  •  Connect with people you care about – Especially in an environment where you can feel homesick, making sure you have time to connect to family and/or friends is important. This can help you feel refreshed and motivated to stay on top of your tasks.
  • Set goals for yourself – When you set goals, you give yourself something to work towards. Having something you want to achieve throughout the semester increases your motivation and makes it feel more fulfilling for you.

Spring Standardized Testing

This year, sophomores and juniors will take weekday ACT-suite exams as part of the annual Illinois State Board of Education-mandated assessments. These ACT exams are replacing the SAT-suite exams taken in previous years in the spring. Sophomores will take the PreACT Secure exam, and juniors will take the ACT with Writing exam. The dates for these tests are below:

April 9 (Wednesday morning) - PreACT Secure

April 23 (Wednesday morning) - ACT with Writing

Please keep an eye on your emails for more information about these exams, including testing day reminders, resources, and the TestNav web application information that will be used to administer the exams.

Driver Education Grade Verification

The Illinois Secretary of State requires that all students who enroll in a Driver Education Program show proof that they are in good standing with their high school.

A completed Grade Verification Form is required and must be submitted before the first day of class.

If you are enrolled in the upcoming Top Driver course, or any driver's education course within the State of Illinois, and have not submitted your Grade Verification Form, please check with the Principal's Office to have your completed form finalized.

Make sure to fill out all necessary information, and signatures must be handwritten, not typed.

If you have any questions, please speak with Mrs. Katich-Rogers in the Principal's Office.

Explore More Math!

All levels of mathematicians are encouraged to join.

Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta (MAθ) sponsors Math Circles, a program for students who want to deepen their mathematical knowledge in unique and interesting areas.

In each circle, students explore topics not typically covered in the standard curriculum, such as Vector Applications in linear algebra. They encourage critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork, building valuable skills across all study areas. It’s a great way for students to strengthen their mathematical intuition, connect with like-minded peers, and improve their mathematical skills.

Participating in Math Circles is greatly rewarding for students. It helps them learn mathematics better and improves their ability in competitive math.
