A free Molly of Denali Screening Party will be hosted by Tlingit & Haida and community sponsors on August 10, 2019 at the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall in Juneau, Alaska.

This groundbreaking new series for kids ages 4-8 is the first national children’s program to feature an Alaska Native lead character. Molly of Denali follows Alaska Native Molly Mabray, a feisty and resourceful 10-year-old Gwich’in/Koyukon/Dena’ina Athabascan girl, who sets off on adventures that help kids develop literacy skills along the way. The series models Alaska Native values such as respecting others, sharing what you have, and honoring your elders, while showcasing strong female role models and showing how technology aids in communication.

"I am so happy that we can host this screening for our children and that so many community partners stepped up to contribute to this event," shared President Richard (Chalyee Éesh) Peterson. "Our children finally have an educational show with a lead character they can identify with and a story line full of adventures that accurately represents our Alaska Native people, cultures and values."

Several Tlingit & Haida tribal citizens played a major role in helping to bring the show to life. Sovereign Bill (Tlingit/Muckleshoot) voices the titular character Molly, Vera Bedard (Tlingit/Dena’ina) wrote for the show and other tribal citizens contributed such as Sydney Isaacs, Lance Twitchelll, Frank Katasse and Joe Yates.

Tlingit & Haida Emerging Leader Shawaan Jackson-Gamble will serve as the event emcee, Woosh.ji.een will provide a dance performance, and a panel discussion will be held with Sovereign Bill and other series contributors such as Princess Johnson, Vera Bedard, Frank Katasse and Lance Twitchell.

In addition to door prizes and a photo booth, the event will also include a free breakfast and lunch provided by Smokehouse Catering and Sacred Grounds (tribally-owned businesses) and community informational booths for the Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC), Juneau Community Public Health, Raising our Children with Kindness (ROCK) Juneau, Sealaska Heritage Institute's (SHI) Baby Ravens Reads, SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC), and Tlingit & Haida Head Start.

The event is co-sponsored by Tlingit & Haida Child Care, Tlingit & Haida Head Start, AEYC, PBS, SHI, SEARHC, Sealaska and Northwest Strategies.
