Back to School Juneau Backpack Drive-Thru Event
Dates: July 31 - August 1, 2021
Location: Andrew Hope Building

It's hard to believe the next school year is just around the corner! Parents who submitted a Back to School Backpack application by the deadline (Friday, July 23, 2021), can pick-up their children's backpack this weekend. Pickup schedule as noted below is by the last name of the parent listed on the application.

Pickup Schedule:
Day 1 – July 31, 2021
9 am – 1 pm • Parent Last Name: A-D
1 pm – 5 pm • Parent Last Name: E-J

Day 2 – August 1, 2021
9 am – 1 pm • Parent Last Name: K-P
1 pm – 5 pm • Parent Last Name: Q-Z

Drive-Thru Route:
The Drive-thru route will be one-way with flaggers and signs to help direct traffic. Enter on to Warrior Street (carport side), then take a right onto Village Street and continue driving until you reach the side parking lot facing Fireweed Place. Please make sure to wear a mask, remain in your car and exit on to Willoughby Avenue.

Late Applications:
Late applications will be available on-site at the Juneau event. A date for distribution of backpacks for late applicants will be announced at a later date.

Southeast Alaska Backpack Distribution:
Backpacks will be shipped to Southeast Alaska communities in the date order of when school starts in their community.

Calling all tribal citizen youth near and far! Tlingit & Haida’s newly formed Youth Commission is pleased to announce the dates for their upcoming Youth Summit! The focus of the summit is to provide our youth with opportunities to use their collective voice to influence change and learn how to engage in the tribal government process. Participants will work in conjunction with the Youth Commission and Advisory Board throughout the summit. Let your voice be heard and register by August 1, 2021!

Congratulations to Tlingit & Haida's newly elected Youth Commission Officers! The officers, including the Emerging Leader who serves as an Ex-Officio member, make up the Youth Commission Board, which is elected annually elected by Youth
Commission Delegates.

The Youth Commission is a working body of Tlingit & Haida to provide a space for tribal citizen youth to use their collective voice to influence change and engage in the the Tribe's government process.

We are proud of this diverse group of individuals who have taken up the task to represent our tribal citizen youth and their communities.

Last Chance to Enter the #OurWaysSummerDays Challenge

There's just a couple of days left to enter the #OurWaysSummerDays Challenge! This challenge encourages tribal citizen youth (ages 12-27) to stay active by participating in traditional activities (fishing, berry picking, beading, formline, dancing, etc). Share a photo on social media using the hashtag #OurWaysSummerDays for a chance to win some great prizes!

How the Challenge Works:
  • Participate in a traditional activity and post a picture of the activity on Facebook using the hashtag #OurWaysSummerDays.
  • Each time a youth uses the hashtag, they'll be entered into the drawing (maximum entries 10).
  • Parents will need to complete a media consent form for all youth that are under 18 years of age.

Once the challenge has closed, Youth Commission Delegates will review and vote on all photos entered. Winners will be announced on Tlingit & Haida's social media and prizes will be distributed in September.

Tribal Court Associate Justices Solicitation
Tlingit & Haida is seeking qualified candidates to fill two Associate Justice positions for the Tribe's Supreme Court - one Associate Justice will serve a one-year term and the other will serve a two-year term. Elections of the Associate Justices will take place at the 86th Annual Tribal Assembly.

Interested candidates must submit a letter of intent to serve and three (3) character references to the Judiciary Committee Chair by close of business (COB) on August 31, 2021. Click here for the full solicitation packet which includes the Tribal Court Bar application.

Tlingit & Haida's Statute Title VI - Tribal Courts outline the following requirements:
  • A candidate must be over the age of twenty-nine (29) years.
  • A candidate must not have been convicted of a felony within the preceding ten (10) years.
  • A candidate must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor within the preceding five (5) years.
  • A candidate must submit three (3) character references attesting to the candidate’s competency and ability to serve as a judicial official.
  • A candidate must be a member in good standing of Tlingit & Haida’s Tribal Bar Association prior to the election.
  • A candidate shall be determined by the Judicial Committee to be well qualified, qualified, or not qualified to serve as Judge so as to ensure the candidate can uphold the integrity and dignity of the Court.

Note: The Judiciary Committee may require a background check by a law enforcement agency.

Call for Emerging Leader Candidates
Tlingit & Haida is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 Emerging Leader position and encourages all Tlingit & Haida Community Councils to nominate a young leader from their community!

The Emerging Leader position provides tribal citizen youth with opportunities to learn about Tlingit & Haida’s governing structure and gain valuable leadership skills.

The election of Tlingit & Haida’s Emerging Leader will take place at the 86th Annual Tribal Assembly.

Application Deadline: September 24, 2021

Application Requirements:
  • Must be enrolled with Tlingit & Haida
  • Must be 18 to 26 years of age
  • Must submit an application
