Minister's Moment

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who is the greatest in Heaven?’ He called a child, set him in front of them, and said, ‘I tell you this: unless you turn round and become like children, you will never enter the realm of Heaven. Let a man humble himself till he is like this child, and he will be the greatest in Heaven .’” Matthew 18: 1-4

The human experience can be likened to a camper in the woods who has run out of water and is praying for rain. Consumed by the desire for rain, she overlooks the clear, clean lake in front of her. As humans, we are conditioned for lack. Consequently, we fail to see the abundance all around us. In other words, we are so used to feeling separate that we no longer even remember what it feels like to be connected. To make matters worse, we have accepted a definition of maturity as self-sufficiency; a goal we hold dear. In this context, we define prosperity as “being able to do anything we want to do-anytime we want to do it-without concern for the cost”. This, however, is not true abundance.

To truly flourish, we must reconnect with the attributes of the happy child. Thriving children have boundaries to push against as they explore life. This protective environment balances their need to grow with their changing vulnerabilities. The happy child also receives unconditional love and is treated with infinite patience. Moreover, they receive immediate constructive feedback when something is amiss. They need positive correction because they are deeply affected by the moods and feelings of those around them. This heighten sensitivity is a reflection of deep feelings of connection to others. Thriving kids are honest with their changing emotions and are not afraid to express them. They also use their active imaginations to create a pleasing reality no matter where they are. Furthermore, they give love freely and trust until they have reason not to. Finally, they live very much in the moment without concern for tomorrow or yesterday. Reconnecting to our child-like qualities is the path to true abundance.

“Just imagine becoming the way you used to be as a very young child, before you understood the meaning of any word, before opinions took over your mind. The real you is loving, joyful, and free. The real you is just like a flower, just like the wind, just like the ocean, just like the sun.” ~ Don Miguel Ruiz
