This month, I had the opportunity to interview BalletNova graduating Senior Sam Thomas about her journey as a dancer and how the art has enriched her life.
1. When did you first start dancing at BalletNova? Who were your first teachers?
I started at BalletNova in 2018 when I was 12. My first teacher was Mrs. Clark, who was very kind and really cared for each of her students -- I remember having trouble learning my new classmates names because Mrs. Clark had nicknames for most of them.
2. What are some of your most memorable roles you've danced over the years?
One of my favorite roles was dancing Flowers in The Nutcracker. Though it was a physically demanding dance, I felt supported by the older girls with whom I was dancing. It’s particularly memorable to me because of the music, the beautiful costumes, and the sense of joy, community, and pride the dance brings.
3. How has ballet shaped you as an individual and artist?
I think ballet has made me a more connected individual by giving me the opportunity to form close friendships with my classmates and learn and work together with them. It has has also helped me become a more confident artist because of my experience in a variety of dance styles.
4. What are your next steps after graduation?
Next year I will be attending the University of Virginia. I hope to continue dancing by joining the University Dance Club.
Congratulations, Sam -- we are proud of you!
Sincerely,
Matthew Powell
