Today I Learned: How to Emboss with Cutting Plates
This week on the
TE Blog, we've been sharing tips from our Creative Team on how to use your Cutting Plates in new and creative ways. With nearly
60 different designs to choose from,
TE Cutting Plates are a terrific way to take your card projects from ho-hum to oh, wow! Today, designer Jen Shults shares a step-by-step tutorial on how to emboss with Cutting Plates. Check it out!

Jen created this gorgeous card using the following supplies:

Notes from Jen: Cutting Plates are so versatile and one of my favorite things to do with a Cutting Plate is use it as an embossing plate. This gives a bit of a different look from an embossing folder that can be used in many different ways. Because it is a cutting plate instead of an embossing folder, the embossed portion is very sharp and well-defined for a crisp and elegant look.

The supplies you’ll need to get started using your Cutting Plates as embossing plates on today's project are:
- Cardstock (Sugar Cube shown) cut to 4.25”x5.5”
- Cutting Plate (Quatrefoil Cutting Plate shown)
- Embossing Pads
- Die-cut machine

The "sandwich" that I use with my Vagabond die-cutting machine is: Solo Platform, Solo Shim, bottom cutting pad, dark brown embossing pad, cardstock, cutting plate (cutting side down), top cutting pad. This gives very smooth results. If you are using a Big Shot with the multipurpose platform open it to tab two and start your stack from the bottom cutting pad.

When you remove the embossed cardstock from the stack, you will need to trim off the little bit of extra cardstock from the cutting plate border.
Next, I die-cut a medium banner with
Banner Stacklets 2 from
Poppy Seed cardstock.
Next, I die-cut the
Thanks Script from
Sugar Cube and
Leafy Branch Die from
Granny Smith.
To emboss the die-cut I used detail silver embossing powder and Versamark with a paper mat underneath. Tip: to make embossing easier, emboss half the die-cut at a time so you can hold the die-cut when heat embossing without burning your fingers!
Repeat this process a second time to smooth out the embossing.
Next, I die-cut
Bloomers 7 from
Strawberry Milkshake and
Lavender Glaze cardstock. (I ended up cutting more than I need for the finished card so I’ll save them for another card.)
To assemble the card, I used foam tape behind the embossed panel to attach it to the
Sugar Cube cardbase. I also used foam tape behind the banner to lift it off the embossed panel. I ended up only using three of the flowers I die-cut, arranging them over the
Leafy Branch die-cut. I centered the
Thanks die at the bottom of the banner and added
Lemon Meringue
Enamel Shapes to the centers of the flowers and a few
Snow Flurries Sequins throughout the banner to tie it all together.
