"Love Beyond Judgment: No Death Penalty for My Grandmother’s Killer"

Our speaker at the Forum this Sunday, July 26, is social justice advocate Sarah Gregory. After the murder of her grandmother, Sarah spent years navigating grief, addiction, and ultimately recovery. Her journey took a transformative turn when she chose to reach out to and build a relationship with the man responsible for her grandmother’s death. Sarah’s story was featured in The Atlantic magazine cover story “Witness,” and she has joined a national conversation on the human cost of the death penalty and the moral complexities of the criminal justice system.

On the following Sunday, August 2, we are looking forward to hearing from Marty Rutherford and Veronica Slajer, two women deeply involved in helping make sure the electoral system works for everyone in Alaska, particularly those in rural areas. Their topic is Good Governance Powers Everything—Assessing Alaska’s Civic Infrastructure. What can be done about getting ballots in and out of rural Alaska in a timely way to ensuring that those in rural communities are not disenfranchised, what is the role of municipal clerks, postal officials and others who are necessary to implementing elections in Alaska? What has the administration been doing to address the issues that have arisen in these areas in past elections? Heather Flynn will be the moderator.

August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption which celebrates the assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. What does that mean? We'll explore this as well as the variety of Marys in the religious world and some other goddess forms, too.

Religious Exploration

Join us for the next Family Night Out on Wednesday, July 29 from 6pm-8pm. Our first event on June 24 was a success! Adults had a chance to visit and the kids played. It was an informal gathering during a lovely June evening. Hot Dogs (vegetarian option available) and s'mores are provided. Bring a side to share if you wish. Finger foods such as veggies, fruits, cheese & crackers are a great option as well as bringing a water bottle.

Religious Exploration registration for the 2026/2027 school year will be available at the end of July. Classes will begin Sunday, August 23 for the school year. I'm looking to round up some new RE helpers this school year. We'll be adding another classroom to split up our largest group once again. Classrooms will be Pre-K, Grades K-1, Grades 2-4 and Grades 5-8.

The NEW Junior Youth Group (Grades 5-8) will begin in October- meeting monthly on a Friday evening. Thank you to all who supported the youth fundraiser of Pride merchandise. Pearl and Dougie staffed the table and collected over $300 to go into our youth account. This will help to plan and fund any special events for youth group we may want to have or attend in the future.

Parent's/Grown-Up Night Out will return in October as well.

HS Youth events/activities will announced as planned and scheduled. HS OWL classes will run for seven consecutive Sunday mornings mid-January through February.

Children's Choir will begin on Sunday, August 30 following the 11am service. Approximately 12:30pm-1pm (a chance to grab a snack after the 11am service and RE classes). There will be an option on the RE Registration to sign up. Kids will be singing at the multi-generational services throughout the school year. The first being the Water/Homecoming Service on Sunday, September 13.

Fall Frolic dates are September 18-20 at Birchwood Camp on Chugiak. Registration will be available mid-August and end on Thursday, September 3. Thanks again to ,The Alliance, for providing funds to pay for the food this year!

Deliberative Democracy is a process of collaborative decision making in civic engagement- a practice used by many communities around the country and elsewhere in the world today. This is a new idea for many of us. Please join us to learn together what it is. We'll read articles and possibly books on the topic TBD.
