Background:
The uprising was an effort by the 1300 incarcerated men at Attica to make demands to improve the inhumane conditions at Attica and throughout the NYS prison system. The uprising ended on September 13, 1971 when then Governor Rockefeller ordered an armed attack by State police and guards killing 29 incarcerated men and 10 hostages.
