How is the COVID-19 Pandemic Impacting Your Family?
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services is working to track the impacts of the coronavirus on children and families. Earlier this month, the department surveyed parents, and the results show concerns that our children's physical and mental health is suffering as a result of the pandemic.
Parents who completed the
survey noted that spending time outdoors was one of the ways families were adapting to social distancing guidelines. That's a great idea. As the weather warms up and the days get longer, it's a great time to step away from the computer, cellphone, and television and go outside. Alaska has plenty of space for us all, but we must be smart and diligent to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.
I agree with Dr. Anne Zink that physical activity can relieve stress, and I think we can all admit we are living through a highly stressful time. Kids and young adults feel stress just like adults, so let's all go outside and get a little exercise. Just do it safely.
“Daily regular physical activity can make a big difference in how your child feels right now. Physical activity improves your mood and eases your stress. A simple walk can help you and your children feel less anxious and improve your sleep that night.” -
Anne Zink, Alaska's Chief Medical Officer.
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services is conducting a
second survey of Alaska families. To participate, text "health," to 907-269-0344.
