Celebrating the First Five and the 300th Edition

Today is our 300th edition of the First Five! It's been such a fantastic journey, and we continue to be blown away by the response to it. Here are some fun facts and background about The First Five and how we got to Edition 300!

Doug Overton created the First Five in August 2020. He made it because, due to the pandemic, he could not get into teacher classrooms to model connection activities. He put together a few ideas to send to his colleagues daily. Here is what the first edition looked like!

Doug and his wife, Kacie, moved to New York in August of 2021, partially because we wanted to begin building Edtomorrow. I was a principal then, and we would get together after work to discuss our dream of what Edtomorrow could be with The First Five front and center. We organized what would be in The First Five and drafted it on this dry-erase board. On the board below, we landed on the three main sections of community building: Connection, Care, and Character. We couldn't have imagined where that conversation would take us, The First Five, and Edtomorrow.

We both finished our jobs at the end of June 2022 to dedicate our time fully to building Edtomorrow and The First Five. We spent the entire summer building content for the 2022 year. On August 15, 2022, we sent out the first national edition of The First Five. The First Five, at that time, was one version each day. After receiving fantastic feedback from our early users, we included two options in each edition: one for younger and one for older students.

Last year, Sarah Nunn (our CEO), Doug, and I built over 2,500 individual resources within The First Five. We are on track to create over 3,500 new pieces this school year! Now in 2024, we have several outstanding educators from across the country helping us build content daily.

The First Five continues to grow and is possible because of educators like yourself who use and share it with others. We love seeing educators tweet or share when they use some of our ideas! It makes our day seeing when that happens and fires us up! Please use our hashtags (#edtomorrow #firstfive) if you post anything so we can see it!

Thanks again for all your support and shares! Here's to another 300 to come!
