Bowman area man charged with murder in domestic violence stabbing

105.3 WSGC News - Elbert County Sheriff Melvin Andrews has announced the arrest of a 34-year-old Bowman area resident on a felony murder charge in connection with the New Year’s Eve stabbing death of 21-year-old Destiny Autumn Huff in a domestic violence incident.

 

Andrew Nicholas Berry of a Bowman Highway address south of Bowman was apprehended inside Hart County, where he had fled on foot Saturday morning within hours of a Code Red alert that had been sent by Elbert County Emergency Services in the northwestern Elbert County area.

 

Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond pronounced Huff dead at 7:38 a.m. Saturday morning. Almond said the Elbert County Emergency Medical Service, Georgia State Patrol, Hart County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the emergency, along with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation.

 

As of Sunday afternoon, Berry was being held at the Elbert County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing. Chief Deputy Darren Scarborough said the Sheriff’s Office investigation is continuing, and additional charges will be forthcoming.

Hospital CEO selection due at authority meeting Tuesday

105.3 WSGC News - The Elbert Memorial Hospital Authority, in the final stages of its search for a new hospital CEO, has scheduled a called board meeting for Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

 

On December 8, the authority announced Candler County Hospital CEO Michael Purvis of Metter and Wayne Medical Center CEO Tyler Taylor of Waynesboro, Tennessee, as the two finalists to replace former Elbert Memorial CEO Kerry Trapnell.

 

The authority’s announcement of the finalists also said the new CEO would be selected at a called meeting to be announced at a later date.

Lady Devils lose two straight to higher-classification foes

105.3 WSGC News - The Elbert County girls’ basketball team ran into some stiff, higher-classification competition in the final two games of the Cedar Shoals Winter Showcase in Athens and took two losses to close out the calendar year.

 

The Class A Division 1 second-ranked Lady Devils lost to Carrollton, ranked No. 17 in the state in Class 7A, 73-55 on Thursday and to Jones County, ranked No. 6 in Class 5A, 61-43 on Friday. Top performers for Elbert County against Carrollton were Niya Moon with 17 points, Aaniyah Allen with 15 and Terrace Hester with 11. Against Jones County, Allen scored 13 and Hester 12.

 

The Elbert County boys also dropped their McDonald’s Showcase finale in Hartwell on Thursday, falling to Loganville 77-63.

 

This week, the Blue Devils will host Stephens County on Tuesday, and both Elbert teams will travel to Fannin County on Saturday.
