Kemp appoints Vaughn to review panel on indictment of Hart County commissioner

105.3 WSGC News - Elbert County Commission Chair Lee Vaughn has been appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp to a special review committee to look into the indictment of Hart County Commissioner Ricky Carter on aggravated assault and other charges.

WLHR News, which covers Hart County, reported that Vaughn, along with Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr and Madison County Commissioner Terry Chandler, will review the case against Carter and make a recommendation to the governor as to whether Carter should be removed or suspended or continue serving as a county commissioner.

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland announced March 19 that Carter and his son Jake Elliott Carter were arrested after an altercation with the commissioner’s brother-in-law. Jake Carter allegedly assaulted his uncle, causing serious injuries, while Ricky Carter stood by. The commissioner faces two counts of felony aggravated assault, one count each of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated battery and three counts of third-degree cruelty to children.

The Hart County Board of Commissioners has called on Carter to resign, but he has not done so. Carter lost his re-election bid in the May 24 primary but unless he is removed or suspended by the governor, he will remain a commissioner through December 31.

Georgia gas price average down 9 cents

105.3 WSGC News - Despite increased travel on the roadways for the 4th of July week, Georgia gas prices have decreased by another 9 cents per gallon. Georgia motorists are now paying an average price of $4.31 for regular unleaded gasoline at the pump, which is still 10 cents more than last month and $1.41 higher than this time last year.

AAA Auto Club spokesperson Montrae Waiters said the downward trend across the state is due to declining crude oil prices and a drop in demand. The national average has also decreased by 9 cents in the past week to $4.81 per gallon.

Georgia’s least expensive gas can be found in the Albany metro market, where the average is $4.13 per gallon. The highest is in the Atlanta market at $4.40. In Elbert and surrounding counties Monday, prices ranged from $4.07 to $4.39, according to the Gas Buddy app.
