Elbert County School Superintendent Jon Jarvis announced Monday he will retire effective June 30, 2023. Jarvis, who has worked in Elbert County schools for more than three decades and has served as superintendent since May 2020, informed the Board of Education of his decision during the board’s monthly work session.

“It is with mixed emotions to announce that I will be retiring from the superintendent position with the Elbert County School District at the end of this school year,” Jarvis said in a statement about the decision. “After serving for 33 years in several different roles in Elbert County Schools, I feel the time has come. While I am excited about what the next chapter of my life will bring, I will always have a place in my heart for my colleagues and the students of Elbert County.

“Please know that I will finish the year strong and will support all of you as we finish the 2022-23 school year. Elbert County is my home, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve our students, employees, and this community.”

Jarvis, 50, succeeded Chuck Bell as superintendent and steered the Elbert County School District through the COVID-19 pandemic and has directed the current expansion and renovation of the former Beaverdam school campus to serve as the county’s new primary school and a 10-classroom addition to the elementary school. Both projects are expected to be completed before the start of the 2023-24 school year.

Before becoming superintendent, Jarvis was a teacher and coach, assistant principal, elementary school and middle school principal and assistant superintendent. He began working for the school district as a lawn maintenance supervisor while attending college.
