Georgia Election Board implements controversial hand counting rule
news@wsgcradio.com
In a contentious decision, Georgia's State Election Board voted 3-2 to implement a new rule requiring local precincts to conduct hand counts of ballot totals at the end of Election Day. This measure aims to ensure the accuracy of machine-tallied results and bolster public confidence in the electoral process.
The new rule mandates that poll managers, accompanied by two sworn poll officers, unseal ballot boxes and remove the paper ballots for independent counting. Each officer will count the ballots separately, sorting them into stacks of 50, and if all three totals match, they will sign a control document confirming the count. In cases where discrepancies arise between the hand count and machine totals, the poll manager is required to investigate and document the inconsistency, taking corrective measures where possible.
To maintain integrity, the counted ballots will be stored in labeled, tamper-proof containers that are sealed and signed by the poll manager and two of the counting officers. This process aims to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the counting procedure.
Poll managers have discretion regarding when to begin the hand count, allowing them to start at the end of Election Day or the following day if a scanner contains more than 750 ballots. This flexibility is designed to address staffing concerns and ensure accuracy, with all counting completed within the designated county certification period.
If ballot counting occurs outside the polling location, the election supervisor must promptly inform all candidates and party chairs of the time and place of the count, ensuring transparency in the process. This information will also be posted at the polling location.
Supporters of the rule argue it enhances election integrity and addresses public concerns about the accuracy of electronic voting systems. However, critics have raised concerns about potential delays in reporting results and the additional burden on poll workers during an already intense electoral period. The rule's implementation has sparked debate among officials, candidates, and voters, highlighting the ongoing discussions about election security and transparency in Georgia.

Elbert County School District implements clear bag policy for athletic events
news@wsgcradio.com
Beginning Sept. 26, 2024 the Elbert County School District will enforce a clear bag policy for all athletic events, aiming to enhance safety for students and spectators alike. Attendees will be required to enter venues through a weapons detection system, applicable to both middle and high school athletic events held at the Granite Bowl and The Inferno.
To accommodate those uncomfortable with the detection devices, an alternative screening method will be offered. The district emphasizes that safety is a top priority, and all weapons—including those carried by permit holders—are strictly prohibited on school property. Individuals found in possession of a weapon may face legal action.
Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to allow sufficient time for the screening process. The district reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone who does not comply with the established security measures.
"The Elbert County Athletic Department and school district are dedicated to providing a secure environment for our community," Superintendent Robert Wheeler stated. "We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we implement these important safety measures."
Attendees are reminded to have clear bags ready for inspection and to follow all instructions from security personnel to ensure a smooth experience for everyone.
