As my heart filled with joy and peace and worship, I was taken to the mission of the Missionary Church: We empower everyday people to love like Jesus and live like missionaries. I realized that is about me. I am to love like Jesus and live like a missionary. That isn’t an assignment; it flows out of the joy of who I am in Jesus. I can only love like Him if He truly is my joy and peace. If my story does not include how Jesus has given me joy and peace, then I have little to share with others.
I began to realize this prayer time was not just for the leaders of the Missionary Church but also for me. I need to experience the joy of the Lord. I need times like this hour of prayer to reflect on His word and allow Him to touch my heart.
I read through the passages related to our mission and the ones related to the theme for the month of July – Experiencing the Joy of the Lord. Sometimes I celebrated and other times there was a tear as I considered what God was saying to me.
I looked at the clock. I was easily 30 minutes into my hour of prayer, and I had not yet prayed for the leaders. This time really was as much for me as it was for the leaders.
I turned to the prayer prompts for praying for our leaders. I read the prompts and looked at the Scripture and prayed that Scripture over our leaders and then found the Lord speaking to me from each passage. These Scriptures were for me. I continued to read and pray and each time, the Lord spoke to me about something in the passage.
The clock was moving. I wasn’t finished praying.
I began to pray for our churches, for my church and for my pastor. I began to wonder what it would look like if every church experienced the fullness of joy and if every pastor led from a place of joy and peace. I could only imagine the fruit that could come in that environment.
My hour had nearly expired, but I still needed/wanted to pray for Bethel University. In addition to praying for God’s presence, provision, and protection, I began to pray that it would be a joy- and peace-filled campus. I prayed that students would have multiple encounters with the Lord and be filled with His peace.
When I finished, I realized that more than an hour had passed. In the end, while I prayed for others, I had an encounter with Jesus. I sensed His presence and enjoyed His peace. Whatever God does in response to my prayers for others, I know that He met me and I am blessed.
