One: Who are we and what are we called to do?

All: We are the sensitive and responsive ones called to create a world where every person is radically affirmed and barriers between people become

bridges of inclusion, justice, and spirituality.

Singing Our Faith ~ Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King;

Peace on earth and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled!”

Joyful, all ye nations rise,

join the triumph of the skies;

With th’ angelic host proclaim,

“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!“

Christ, by highest heaven adored;

Christ the everlasting Lord!

Late in time behold him come,

offspring of the virgin’s womb.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,

hail th’ incarnate Deity,

Pleased as we with those to dwell,

Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

Hail the Son of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,

risen with healing in his wings.

Mild he lays His glory by,

born that we no more may die,

Born to raise the meek of earth,

born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Call to Worship and Lighting the Fourth Advent Candle

Linda Pape and the Gaberdiel Family

Linda: Over a hundred people, from the ages of two to eighty years old, were asked the question, “What makes you feel connected; what makes you feel loved?” From the voices of different generations, hear their answers:

Linda: Handwritten notes.

Chelsea: Casseroles.

Ellie: Being invited in.

Gus: Reading a book together.

Linda: The passing of the peace.

Chelsea: Family walks.

Gus: When I see my friends at school.

Linda: Surprise phone calls.

Chelsea: Making music with other people.

Ellie: Home-cooked food.

Gus: Belly laughs.

Linda: Eye contact.

Chelsea: Dinner parties.

Ellie: An inside joke.

Gus: Hugs.

Linda: Dancing with my partner in the kitchen.

Chelsea: Today we light the candle of love as a reminder that

from the very first generation, God has surrounded us with love.

May this good news—these threads of love—not only weave

deeper connections between neighbors, but shape our actions and allow us to see God more clearly.

(Another worship leader or reader lights the candle.)

In a lonely world, let this light shine bright. From generation to generation, we are held in God’s love. Thanks be to God for that good news. Amen.

Opening Prayer ~ In This Quiet Place

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

How can I give, and how to forgive

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

You

Like Jesus in the garden

Let me be in this quiet place

Let me see your path for me

Let me trust in your grace

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

How to be true in all I do

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

You

Celebrations For the Deep Goodness of Life

Led by Pastor Ken

This is our time to share the celebrations of our lives: birthdays, anniversaries, words of kindness and works of peace and justice.

Invitation to Give ~ Linda Pape

One: We are called to make real the sharing of the gifts God has given to us.

All: We offer what we have for the good of all.

Our Advent Offering is dedicated to our Immigration Justice Fund.

In our offerings, we share not only measurable treasures of time, talents, and resources, we radically commit ourselves to sharing immeasurable gifts of forgiveness, grace, compassion, acceptance, and loving concern with each other and with ourselves.

In response to our celebrations and the deep goodness of life, our offerings for the celebration of life, in this place and beyond, shall now be received.

Words For Mission

Led by Linda Pape

Please stand in mind, body, or spirit

One: As you leave this place, may you go knowing that from

generation to generation, we have been claimed and loved.

From generation to generation, God has been by our side.

From generation to generation, we are not alone.

The God of yesterday and the God of tomorrow knows you

by name, loves you, and calls you forth, saying,

“Go be the person you are called to be, love wildly, do justice, and come back soon.”

Embrace us as partners in the divine acts of creating.

These are the times!

All: We are the people!

One: All of Creation is blessed!

All: May we love all and serve all!

One: May God be with you.

All: And also with you.

One: Amen.

All: Amen.

Sending Forth Songs ~ It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

by Edmund H. Sears

1. It came upon the midnight clear,

that glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the earth to touch

their harps of gold;

“Peace on the earth, good will to all,

from heaven’s all gracious King.”

The world in solemn stillness lay

to hear the angels sing.

2. Still through the cloven skies they come,

with peaceful wings unfurled,

And still their heavenly music floats

o’er all the weary world;

Above its sad and lowly plains

they bend on hovering wing,

And ever o’er its Babel sounds

the blessed angels sing.

3. And you, beneath life’s crushing load,

whose forms are bending low,

Who toil along the climbing way,

with painful steps and slow,

Look now, for glad and golden hours

come swiftly on the wing;

O rest beside the weary road,

and hear the angels sing!

4. For lo, the days are hastening on,

by prophet bards foretold,

When with the ever circling years

comes round the age of gold;

When peace shall over all the earth

its ancient splendors fling,

And all the world send back the song

which now the angels sing.

Sermon Reboot is ON for today.

This is a time to talk about the message and explore together using the ORID Art Form Conversation methodology. What is ORID? It stands for Observation, Reflection, Interpretation, and Decision. You will get the hang of it.
