Setting the Stage

Our church family is constantly changing.

People are claimed, babies are born, children grow up.

People commit themselves to one another, loved ones and friends among us come to the end of their lives.

Individuals move into our community and church life.

Others leave, moving away to new places, experiences, and opportunities.

It is important and right that we recongize these times of passage, of beginnings and endings, of thresholds, of bridges.

Today, we share the time of farewell with Pastor Ken.

Ending of Called Ministry

Cindy: In July 2008, Ken Heintzelman was called by Shadow

Rock UCC as Senior Minister.

Ken: I thank Shadow Rock, its claimed members and friends

for the love, kindness, and support shown me these last

18 years. I ask forgiveness for the mistakes I have made.

I am grateful for the ways my leadership has been

accepted. As I leave, I carry with me all that I have

learned here.

All: We receive your thankfulness, offer forgiveness, and accept that it’s your time to leave. We express our

gratitude for your time among us. We ask your

forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our

faith and mission, our shared values and self-

understanding, continues to be powerful. The

metaphor you shared of our three campfires with a

table in the center will live on in our hearts and minds, inspiring respect for one another and blessing our occasional forays between campfires.

Release

Toni: Do you, the members and friends of Shadow Rock UCC, release Ken Heintzelman from the duties of Senior

Minister?

All: We do, with the help of the Spirit of Life and Love.

UCC from turning to you and depending on you?

Ken: I do, with the help of the Spirit of Life and Love.

Toni: Do you offer your encouragement for the continued

ministry of Shadow Rock and on its relationship with

another who will come to serve?

Ken: I do, with help from the Spirit of Life and Love.

Toni: On behalf of the Southwest Conference and the United

Church of Christ, we witness the words spoken, words of

gratitude, forgiveness and release. The member churches

of our conference hold each of you in prayer. We pledge

our support in the transitions signified in this service.

All: Thanks be to God.

Message from Linda Merrit, President of the Board

Spirit of Life and Love, Ultimate Reality, help us to trust the future awaiting us. The time we were together with Pastor Ken saw our laughter and tears, our hopes and disappointments, our efforts to be on the cutting edge, and our faithful attempts to live out our mission. Guide us as we hold these cherished memories while bridging into the future and living our values of justice, inclusion and spirituality.
