Welcome and Announcements

Shared by Pastor Ken

We welcome everyone to our service and hope you are blessed by worshipping with us.

Opening Words

Shared by Pastor Ken

One: Who are we and what are we called to do?

All: We are the sensitive and responsive ones called to create a world where every person is radically affirmed, and barriers between people become

bridges of inclusion, justice, and spirituality.

Call to Worship ~ Sue Stuart

One: Will you follow?

Will you lay down your coat?

Will you lay down something important?

Will you shout “Hosanna”?

Will you join the parade?

Will you sing, even if your throat is hoarse?

Will you cut down a palm branch?

Will you wave it in the air?

Will you follow the one riding on a donkey?

Will you let this good news inspire you to act?

All: We will. We will sing. We will pay close attention. We will worship. We will follow.

One: Hosanna in the highest!

All: Hosanna in the highest.

Singing Our Faith ~ Hosanna, Hallelujah!

by Richard Avery & Donald Marsh

Chorus

Hosanna, hallelujah! Sing we loud and clear.

Hosanna, hallelujah! Jesus Christ is near.

With ancient psalms and new grown palms

Praise him on his way.

Hosanna, hallelujah! Christ our Lord is here.

1. This day in spring the streets will ring

With voices sweet and lyrical.

To greet our Lord, the one adored,

His very life a miracle.

Chorus

2. King David’s Son now rides upon

A mule, of beasts the lowliest.

Amidst the throng it bears along

Of all of us the holiest.

Chorus

3. How very odd the Son of God

Must do things that would weary us.

God will amaze; God works in ways

That we all find mysterious.

Chorus

Centering Moment ~ Pastor Ken

Invitation to Confession ~ Sue Stuart

The very first Palm Sunday was a day of action. It was a day of movement, of crowded city streets, and cries of "Hosanna!" It was a day of peaceful protest and dreams for a better world. The first Palm Sunday was a day of peaceful, hopeful action.

So friends, on this Palm Sunday, let us join the saints before us in an act of faith. Let us begin with an act of prayer, an act of honesty, an act of transformation. Let us begin by drawing close to God and sharing the truth of our lives.

Let us begin with confession.

Join me in prayer:

Prayer of Confession ~ Sue Stuart

Spirit of Life and Love,

we know through Jesus that you spent your days teaching and healing. You marched through the streets and walked on water. You laid hands on the sick and broke bread at crowded dinner tables. Your good news was not confined to conversation. It was not confined to the Temple. Your good news was an act of love, alive in the world.

Holy God, we long for a faith like that. Forgive us for the times when we confine our faith to something we think about, as opposed to something we act upon. Inspire us to love as you loved. Inspire us to act.

With hope for tomorrow we pray, amen.

Words of Forgiveness ~ Pastor Ken

Shadow Rock Church family,

whether or not you wave your palm branch,

whether or not you live out your faith,

whether or not you allow this good news to inspire your actions, God will never stop loving you.

Jesus will never stop marching for you.

The Spirit will never stop listening to you.

We are claimed, loved, and held in grace.

What good, good news. Amen!

Invitation to Give ~

One: In the light and beauty of day

All: We give thanks in awe and wonder.

One: In the dark and stillness of night

All: We dream of healing and hope.

One: And so we give of ourselves and our offerings to God.

In our offerings, we share not only measurable treasures of time, talents, and resources, we radically commit ourselves to sharing immeasurable gifts of forgiveness, grace, compassion, acceptance, and loving concern with each other and with ourselves.

In response to our celebrations and the deep goodness of life, our offerings for the celebration of life, in this place and beyond, shall now be received.

The Chime Calls Us to The Word About Life

Word About Life ~ Pastor Ken

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and

Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them,

“Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you

enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever

ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you,

‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’” They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought

the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna! (Save!)”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He

looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

Explanation of Disposition of Ashes

Led by Peggy Hesley and Marilyn Rampley

Peggy: Last week we burned last year’s prayer flags. Today we receive those ashes as a reminder that those written

intentions have been carried by the wind and received

with thanks and humility.

Marilyn: We invite you to come forward and receive ashes as a mark on your wrist to celebrate prayers of hope and

peace, of endings and new beginnings – springtime

messages that quicken our senses and nourish our

souls. Come forward as guided by the ushers.

Liturgy of the Ashes

Led by Peggy Hesley

One: We have converted our prayers into ashes.

All: We have invited the wind to scatter our good wishes.

One: Spirit of light, hear our prayers of joy, grief and supplication.

All: We send good wishes to all the world.

One: Spirit of love, hear our prayers for the resurrection of a

world filled with peace and healing.

All: We send good wishes to all the world.

One: We receive this mark as a symbol of penance and healing; mortality and renewal.

All: Amen.

Invitation to Receive the Ashes

Led by Marilyn Rampley

One: We rise again from ashes, let healing come from pain.

All: Give our stumblings direction, give our visions wider view.

One: Nourish our desire and actions in spreading loving

kindness. You are invited to come forward as with

Communion, directed by the ushers. All are welcome.

Sending Forth Song ~ Loving Kindness

by Marilyn Rampley

Wind, lift our intentions

Let them float on the breeze

Scatter them over the earth

And plant them in softened hearts

And nourish their growth.

Chorus:

Loving Kindness to one another

Loving Kindness to our home

Loving Kindness in our thoughts and deeds

May we practice loving kindness.

Breath of Life, clear out the clutter

Hold kindness close

Then spread it to every corner

Singing in power

Even in our hearts.

Chorus:

Loving Kindness to one another

Loving Kindness to our home

Loving Kindness in our thoughts and deeds

May we practice loving kindness.

Sending Forth

Led by

One: As you leave this place, when you meet anger, speak with love. When you meet fear, speak with hope. When you

meet pain, speak with gentleness. But no matter what,

speak this good news. The good news of the gospel is love

and justice for all. It is joy that surprises, and it is

nonviolence that transforms.

These are the times!

All: We are the people!

One: All of Creation is blessed!

All: May we love all and serve all!

One: God be with you.

All: And also with you.

One: Amen.

All: Amen.

Sermon Reboot is ON for today.

This is a time to talk about the message and explore together using the ORID Art Form Conversation methodology. What is ORID? It stands for Observation, Reflection, Interpretation, and Decision. You will get the hang of it.
