“Two people—one

radiating joy & the other wading into weariness—hold the world together.”

Welcome and know that no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!

Order of Worship

3 December 2023

Welcome to Shadow Rock UCC and to the season of

Advent! Joy is often a companion to many other

emotions. We can feel joy in addition to feeling many

other things at once: grief, anticipation, anxiety,

excitement, disappointment, exhaustion. Perhaps many of us live with the myth that joy is not something we deserve—or that it is wholly out of reach. But our joy is rooted in the truth that we belong to God. Can you tether yourself to that deep truth? You deserve to feel joy—fully. The world needs your joy, even if you are weary. Our joy is better when it is shared.

The First Sunday of Advent

Prelude ~ Advent Medley

Shared by Christine Kyhn

Welcome and Announcements

Lois Benerniss and Cindy Gattorna

Opening Words

Led by Pastor Ken

One: Who are we and what are we called to do?

All: We are the sensitive and responsive ones called

to create a world where every person is radically

affirmed and barriers between people become

bridges of inclusion, justice, and spirituality.

Singing Our Welcome For the Season

~ Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

1.  Come, thou long expected Jesus,

born to set thy people free;

from our fears and sins release us,

let us find our rest in thee.

Israel's strength and consolation,

hope of all the earth thou art;

dear desire of every nation,

joy of every longing heart.

2. Born thy people to deliver,

born a child and yet a King,

born to reign in us forever,

now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal spirit

rule in all our hearts alone;

by thine all sufficient merit,

raise us to thy glorious throne.

Lighting Our First Advent Candle With A Remembrance Day Litany: Ashes, Stones, and Flowers

In memory of all Victims of War and Terrorism

Led by the Spencer Family

One: For vibrant lives of all people suddenly and

shamelessly sacrificed,

All:   We lift up the ashes of our loss, O Source of Life.

One: For the lives that continue, haunted forever by the pain  of absence,

All:  We lift up the ashes of our remorse, O Wellspring of  Compassion.

One: For the conflagration of flames and nightmare images  forever seared into our memories,

All: We lift up the ashes of our pain, O Breathing Spirit of  the World.

One: For the charred visions of peace and the dry taste of fear,

All: We lift up the ashes of our grief, O Infinite.

One: For all the deaths that have been justified by turning the  love of God or country into fanatical arrogance,

All: We lift up the ashes of our shame, O God. As we cast  these ashes into the troubled water of our times,

Transforming One, hear our plea:

Men: that by your power they will make fertile the soil of our future

Women: and by your mercy nourish the seeds of peace.

Silence

One: For the ways humanity pursues violence rather than understanding,

All:   We lift up the stones of our anger, O Breathing Spirit  of the World.

One: For the ways we allow national, religious and ethnic  boundaries to circumscribe our compassion,

All:  We lift up the stones of our hardness, O Wellspring of  Compassion.

One: For our addiction to weapons and the ways of

militarism,

All: We lift up the stones of our fear, O Source of Life.

One: For the ways we cast blame and create enemies,

All: We lift up the stones of our self-righteousness, O God. As we place these stones into this troubled water, Transforming One, hear our plea:

Men: Just as water wears away the hardest of stones,

Women: so too may the power of your compassion soften the  hardness of our hearts and draw us into a future of

justice and peace.

Silence

One: For sowing seeds of justice to blossom into harmony,

All:   We cast these flowers into the water, O Source of Peace.

One: For seeing clearly the many rainbow colors of humanity and earth,

All: We cast these flowers into water, O Infinite.

One: For calling us to life beyond our grieving,

All: We cast these flowers into water, O Breathing Spirit of the World. As we cast these flowers into this living water, Transforming One, hear our plea:

Men:  Just as water births life in a desert and gives hope to the wounded,

Women: so too may the power of your nurturing renew our commitment to peace.

One: May hope light the world this Christmas. (Light the first Advent Candle.)

The above litany is adapted from Rev Patricia Pearce, former  pastor of Tabernacle United Church, Philadelphia, and Rabbi Arthur Waskow, director of The Shalom Center.

Quiet Place

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

How I can give, and how to   forgive

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know You

Like Jesus in the manger

Let me be in this quiet place

Let me see your path for me

Let me trust in your grace

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

How to be true in all I do

In this quiet place

In this quiet place

Help me be still and know

You

Celebrations and Celebration Song

Led by Pastor Ken

At this time, we share moments from our lives: birthdays,

anniversaries, and words of peace and justice. We celebrate

sorrows and grief as part of our comprehensive view of life.

Give voice to goodness!

Celebrate your heart and your spirit.

Celebrate your life while you live it.

Even when it’s hard to do,

celebrate the best of you!

Celebrate your dreams and your visions.

Celebrate the love you’ve been given.

Cherish all that you’ve been through.

Celebrate the best of you!

Invitation to Give

Led by Cindy Gattorna

Our most important stewardship is our love and care for each other. Please use the “Thinking of You” cards to send a message of care to someone in our fellowship and put it in the offering plate.

In response to our celebrations and the deep goodness of life, our offerings for the

celebration of life, in this place and beyond, shall now be

received.

Dedication of Our Offerings

Led by Cindy Gattorna

One: Because we can hope, we know that we can give, expecting what we offer to be multiplied many times over, knowing that it will create positive change.

All: In this Advent season, we dedicate our offerings to the building of a more hopeful and peaceful world.

One: May the Christmas story with all its power bring alive our individual hopes into one large outpouring that is significant, life-affirming and blessed for all people.

Sending Forth Song ~ O Come, Emmanuel

1. 1. O come, O come, Emmanuel

And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here

Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel!

2. O come, thou Wisdom from on high,

And order all things, far and nigh;

To us the path of knowledge show,

And cause us in her ways to go.

Chorus

3. O come, Desire of nations bind

All peoples in one heart and mind;

Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease;

Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

Chorus

4. O come, thou Day-spring, come and cheer

Our spirits by thine advent here

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night

And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Chorus
