Hello Westfield families!
This week's weather may have been rainy, but it has not dampened our Hornet spirit! Our students are learning and performing! Lower School students and the Class of 2020 will take the stage for tomorrow's Grandparents' Day show (remember - tomorrow is a noon dismissal for all students), while Upper School students will be competing tomorrow in region literary and state debate competitions. Athletic events are being rescheduled due to rain outs this week, but our athletes are still working hard! Don't forget to purchase your tickets for the upcoming 50th Anniversary Gala & Auction and also tuition credit raffle tickets. It's great to be a Westfield Hornet!
Infection and Illness Prevention

Two cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in the state of Georgia. We are monitoring the situation via the Georgia Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and we are continuing to implement our normal prevention measures which include regular weekly disinfecting of classrooms and buildings during this time of year.

The CDC recommends that the best way to prevent infection is through everyday practices -- cleanliness and hand washing. We are posting hand washing reminder posters in all restrooms on campus and encouraging everyone on our campus to practice the following everyday actions listed below. Our Upper School multimedia journalism class created a quick PSA (see below) to encourage Upper School students and faculty to wash hands and help stop the spread of illness and infection. Please talk to your child about the importance of proper hand washing and illness prevention.

  • Wash hands often with soap and water (use alcohol-based hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol if soap/water not available)
  • Cover nose and mouth with a clean tissue when coughing and/or sneezing.  Throw the tissue in the trash after using.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth, and face.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.

We ask that all students who have a fever, symptoms of a respiratory infections, or have been exposed to a person with the flu, coronavirus, or any other communicable disease or virus to stay home.  The CDC recommends that persons seek medical care and stay home for at least 24 hours after fever is gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.

Additionally, we are monitoring upcoming field trips and other student activities scheduled this spring.  Should the need arise to postpone or cancel any field trips/activities, etc. or to implement any school dismissals or closure, we will distribute information accordingly.  Please know that we will continue to do all that we can to keep our students, faculty, and staff healthy.

Today’s throwback is a salute to Grandparents’ Day, one of Westfield most beloved traditions. Originated in 1990, the Grandparents’ Day performance featuring our Lower School students and the senior class was the brainchild of Mrs. Billie Sue Thompson, former Westfield first grade teacher, as a way to honor and thank our grandparents for all they do. Soon after, Mrs. Joye Goodwin, second grade teacher and Lower School director, took over the reins and directed the production for over 25 years until her retirement in 2019. From Disney and Broadway shows to salutes to the Grand Ole Opry, the production's theme changes year after year. Throughout the preparation and performance, our students gain valuable life skills such as self-confidence, self-control, teamwork, concentration, and creativity. In addition, students create artwork and special writing projects to give as gifts to their grandparents and special guests. Tomorrow, our current Lower School students will once again take the stage for the 31st annual production and will undoubtedly put on a magnificent performance of Westfield Bandstand ! We are incredibly thankful for all our Lower School faculty, directors, music teachers, and art teachers who continue to dedicate so much time and energy into making this event an annual success and incredible school tradition. #throwbackthursday #50yearsofwestfield #grandparentsday #westfieldgpd
