October 1, 2020
Greetings!
As we enter our seventh full week of school, we are thankful to be here on campus all together! Truly it has been a challenging time for our school, our community, state, and nation as we continue to navigate the pandemic. Our goal is to slow the spread of the COVID virus and to prevent as many quarantines as possible. It is a team effort, a partnership between our school, our students, and our families to have our school reopen and remain open. We appreciate your patience as we continue to work through the process, especially your willingness to be flexible as we have to make changes – many at the last minute. As always, thank you for your support of Westfield. #facebehindthemask spotlights

This week's #facebehindthemask spotlight shines on Mrs. Anne Moore and Mrs. Mary Gentry.

Mrs. Moore has worked at Westfield for two years as the Lower School Director. She can be found in the Lower School and Pre-K/Kindergarten Buildings assisting teachers and students. Mrs. Moore says, “I am blessed to get to come to work each day. The hard-working, caring teachers create engaging learning environments where students are able to produce their best work. The family atmosphere and relationships make Westfield a special place.”

Mrs. Gentry has worked at Westfield for three years. She can be found in the Upper School Building teaching math. Here is what Mrs. Gentry says she enjoys most about working at Westfield: “I truly enjoy the smallness of the school. Getting to see students from Pre-K through 12th grade at pep rallies and assemblies is so special. Getting to know all of the students in the Upper School whether I teach them or not is wonderful.”
Pre-K students in Mrs. Rashelle Benton's class have been working hard on shaping and molding Play-Doh to form the letters of their names! Working with Play-Doh also helps to develop fine motor skills needed for cutting, gluing, and writing. #handsonlearning #westfieldprek
First graders in Mrs. Liana Walton’s class can do so many things! From reading books and poems to riding horses, feeding animals, making a circuit, and riding a hover board, here are a few pictures of what they can do. #westfieldfirstgrade #Icandoitday
Eighth graders in Mrs. Anna Caulley’s foreign language class shared presentations on world cultures such as art, monuments, pets, sports, and more. #westfieldforeignlanguage
Upper School students in Mr. Jarrod Lewis' chemistry classes conducted an interesting experiment this week to determine the caloric count of food - specifically the snack food, Doritos - for their study on heat energy and the energy content of food. The students used a soft drink can as their calorimeter to determine the number of calories per gram. Photo credits: yearbook staff #westfieldscience #handsonlearning

Undefeated Middle School softball vies for championship this Saturday
Congratulations to our undefeated Middle School softball team and Coach Mason Nelson for an awesome 13-0 season! These Lady Hornets will play for the Middle School championship this Saturday at the Hornets' Nest. The middle school league includes Westfield, Tattnall, Strong Rock, Stratford, GMC, FPD, and Mount de Sales. Good luck, Middle School Lady Hornets!! #westfieldsoftball
Emma Williams becomes Westfield's new leader on career wins and strikeouts!
Congratulations to Senior pitcher Emma Williams who recently broke two school career pitching records. Emma is now the All Time Career Wins leader in school history. Emma has earned 74 career wins in the circle for the Lady Hornets, breaking the previous record of 72 held by Christine Campbell '12. Emma also recently became the Career leader in most strikeouts recorded by a pitcher. With 650 career strikeouts, Emma surpassed the previous record of 632 held by Lana Mackey Sullivan '06. Congratulations to Emma and good luck to you and your teammates the rest of the season. Go Lady Hornets! #westfieldproud #westfieldsoftball
Congratulations to senior Brooke Corlee who was recognized today as the September Student-Athlete of the Month by the Perry Kiwanis Club! Brooke is an outstanding student and varsity softball player. We are Westfield proud!
Westfield's varsity and JV clay target teams had a great shoot on Saturday at the Ocmulgee Gun Club. Congratulations to senior Donnie Layne who placed first in trap, breaking 69 out of 75 clays, at only his second meet. Donnie recently joined the team after being invited by classmate Cal Langston to come to a practice in August. "Donnie was skeptical because he had never even held a shotgun," says clay target coach Heather Miller. "Thankfully, Donnie took Cal up on the invitation because, that day, a star was born! Donnie broke 17 out of 25 clays shooting skeet at that very first practice round. Breaking 69 of 75 clays in a meet is something most shooters practice for years to accomplish."

This year's Westfield clay target team has amazing talent, and we are Westfield proud of each and every single shooter! #westfieldproud
Congratulations to our Middle School XC teams at their home meet - the Hornet Hustle! Hayden Hardy placed 4th, Liam Akin placed 7th, and Carson Bryant placed 9th. The boys team placed 3rd overall. For the girls, Adelyn Butts placed 12th, Holland Carruth placed 13th, and Marissa Walton placed 15th. The girls team placed 3rd overall. Great job, Middle School XC!! Thanks to our XC coaches Liana Walton and Wendy Bryan, Athletic Director Coach Chip Champion, Brett and Tammy Hardy, and many XC parents who helped put on a fantastic day! We are Westfield proud! #westfieldxc
