DAY LIGHT SAVINGS ENDS AT MIDNIGHT ON NOVEMBER 5TH.
TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK 1 HOUR BEFORE YOU GO TO BED.
| |
It is hard to believe that this is my last newsletter article to you at Church of the Holy Spirit. I am full of all sorts of feelings about completing this assignment with you. Among those are a few sprigs of regret that I wasn’t here long enough to get to know as many of you as I would have liked.
During much of the time we had together we were under restrictions about social distancing and masks, which absolutely worked to keep us healthy, but did not allow us to visit casually in the ways we all know to build community. We accomplished a great deal together in that short time. I thank all of you so much for your ability to trust “the new Guy” and accomplish some work together.
In these last days I have had extensive meetings with your Wardens and with your new Rector. I am delighted to see them building strong relationships that will be important as Patrick begins his service among you. I think that you have, even though the process was not always clear and smooth, gone out and found the absolute best match for ministry here in the years to come. I look forward to hearing many good things out of that new relationship.
This last lap in the vacancy process can feel really good to some members, as it gives them enough certainty about the future that they can relax and enjoy the transition. For others, you may find that it raises your anxiety a bit because the candidate has been found, all things are ready for him to be here and yet, we are not quite there yet. The medicine for that particular anxiety is transparency, clarity, and reassurance. A generous serving of these will allow most all of us to lower our anxiety and experience one last wave of patience as we look forward to many energizing beginnings once he arrives.
Patrick is coming! And yet, we have a few last-minute things to do before welcoming him.
1) This Sunday, October 30, we will de-commission our Stalwart Search Committee that did an amazing job of creating your parish profile and studying clergy applications, not to mention the hours and days spent since you made your choice, getting Holy Spirit ready for a new Rector, and Patrick ready for this new field of mission. Come be a part of that service as we congratulate and thank those who served and welcome them back to the important ministries they were accomplishing before the search began.
2) On All Saints Sunday, November 6, we will take a moment to especially remember and honor all those who were lost to us over the last two years whose remembrances and burials were interrupted by the pandemic. Come be with us for this service that will include this remembrance at 10:00 a.m.
3) On my last Sunday with you, November 13, we will use the excerpt from “Leave Taking from a Congregation” from the Book of Occasional Services that we used to say a proper “Good-bye!” to Gail Smith a few weeks back. Gail will be joining us for this service as assisting priest for the day.
I’ve truly enjoyed my time among you. Thanks so much for extending your trust to me, even though I arrived by Zoom and didn’t have that long a time to be physically present among you. I am impressed by the way you work together and the things you have accomplished in this interim.
There is so much talent at Holy Spirit - more concentrated here than any place I have served. In your new relationship with Patrick, I know you will be working to put these gifts to work in unprecedented ways and that God, through you, will achieve incredible goals. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I have great expectations for all that you will accomplish together in God’s name.
My heart, my best, my blessings, and God’s grace be to you all.

We said farewell to The Rev. Gail Smith at the end of September and had a lovely celebration of her time with us. Now we are moving rapidly towards saying farewell to The Rev. Joe Robinson and celebrating his time with us as Transitional Priest In Charge on Sunday November 13th. Please join us for this celebration!
And on the following Sunday, November 20th, we will at last be welcoming The Rev. Patrick Ward as our new Rector, and his fiancé Roger Lovejoy. Exciting times! It has been a very long time since The Rev. Adam Linton left us, and we at last come to the end of our long search process and to its much-anticipated conclusion. We hope you will all come and welcome Patrick and Roger with us as we move into a new era of our history together in this wonderful parish we call home. Note that Patrick’s institution as Rector by the Bishop will take place at a later date.
Prior to our October Vestry meeting, the Vestry had the chance to give our thanks to Joe+, while having some delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts.
Hannah Rose joined us on Zoom and shared her ideas on how to expand the Free Shop to reach younger people. The Treasurer, Chris Crighton, reported that the month ran a deficit but year-to date we are still just in the black. He will be presenting a first draft 2023 budget to the vestry in November. He advised the vestry that we are going ahead with fixing the organ speakers at a very reasonable cost. GWAG gave their financial report as requested by Vestry, and it was decided to move the timing of GWAG reports to annually in time for the Annual Report.
As Wardens we reported that the Letter of Agreement for The Rev Patrick Ward has been agreed and signed by all parties including Bishop Alan Gates of our Diocese. The Wardens have had several meetings with Joe+ to plan these last weeks of his time with us and to discuss the preparations for Patrick’s arrival. We Wardens have also met with Patrick a few times to get initial important dates agreed and in his calendar. The Transition Committee is making sure that the rectory is welcoming and to help Patrick and Roger with any questions about moving in.
The Communications Committee is doing well at defining the processes for approvals and the marketing requirements (where necessary) for events.
An update was given on preparations for the Holiday Bazaar and the Church School is busy planning for Advent and Christmas. A short report was read on Nominating Committee progress, and Habitat has shared they are not expecting to go ahead with the Orleans site. The Vestry suggested that we look for a site to support in other local towns.
As Joe+ says, these are uncertain times as we say farewell to him and transition towards Patrick’s first day with us. If anyone is feeling anxious, or has questions, please know that we are happy to talk with you about anything – there are no stupid questions! Call us! Email us!

Dear Members and Friends of the Church of the Holy Spirit,
We have chosen The Joy of Giving for the year's stewardship theme hoping that this theme informs and encourages you as you consider your pledge. Please prayerfully consider your gifts of Time, Talent, as well as Treasure to our community of faith as you look toward the coming year. Remember, your financial support is always important, and all pledges, large and small, matter.
The Pledge Card you receive in the mail will look a bit different this year. At Holy Spirit we have created many ways to give of ourselves. Many of them are listed on this year's pledge card. So, in addition to committing your financial support, reflect upon how you might like to participate in our shared life of this faith community. We pray you will discover new ways to use your talents and energy.
As you prayerfully consider your pledge, reflect upon some personal experience of giving to another, and get in touch with the Joy that you experienced. Then, let's share our stories and our Joys, affirming together that line from dear St. Francis, "It is in giving that we receive." so that our shared joys become infectious.
Please consider your financial commitment to The Church of the Holy Spirit, and let us also know how you’d like to participate in the joy of sharing your TIME & TALENT. These ministries of CHS need your support, and the best communities are the ones in which everyone enjoys participating.
As we welcome our new Rector, The Reverend Patrick Ward, we are grateful for each of you and the part you play in our church. Join us in praying that all who share in our community will find new joy in this season of new commitment and service.
We are made in God's image; is it any wonder that we should delight in generosity? We look forward to this new way of sharing with each other.
Peace, Your Stewardship Committee
| |
The Nominating Committee is currently looking for three people to join the Vestry in 2023. This will be an especially exciting time to participate as our new Rector, Patrick Ward will be just beginning his time with us. Let us know of your interest.
Committee members: Tom Dewing (Chair), Kathy Goddard, Page McMahan, Elizabeth Merritt and Matt Thompson.

Friday October 21 was our annual
Church School Pumpkin Carving and Pizza party
Everyone had a great time as evident in the photos below.
We are excited to welcome some new and returning families to our Church School and Godly Play classes. The Middle and High School classes are also back in full swing.
A reminder... Church School starts at 9:30 when all the children have a group activity in the Gathering Room. Then, at 9:45 all move to their respective classrooms and later join their family in the church.
To all parishioners interested... We would still love your help in our Church School some Sundays or during the week. Help could be getting supplies, typing, organizing, storytelling, etc... ... If interested in helping in any way please see Hanna Schneider, Ruth Campbell or Matt or Jamie Thompson!! Thank YOU!
We are looking forward to sharing in Joe's + Celebration on Sunday November 13 with the return of a Youth Breakfast after the service.
SAVE THE DATE: On November 27th annual Advent Wreath making in the Parish Hall after the Sunday Service. (Donated greens are welcome and what we don’t use will be given to First Fruits)
Looking ahead to Christmas: Look for sign-ups in the Church School Gathering Room for the Christmas Eve Pageant, Gingerbread House assembly and decorating, and, candy donations etc. for decorating the houses.
| |
Another popular holiday tradition at Holy Spirit is our annual Christmas Giving Tree. In November, we will send information about how to make a financial donation that will be used by local charities to purchase gift cards for local families.

LADIES' LUNCHEON
Thursday November 10th, at Noon
One week later than our usual time!!
| |
The quite elegant luncheon last month in honor of Betty Daiute given by her daughter Ellen was delicious and delightful. We had a good turnout despite the rain. Several of Ellen’s friends came to support her and several of Betty’s friends shared stories of appreciation for her life. It was a warm and welcoming tribute.
Our next meeting date is November 10th, a week later than usual, because the Christmas Bazaar is November 5th and they need the Parish Hall for preparation.
On November 10th, our volunteers are: Susan Owens-chips; Ginny Clarendon-paper goods; Marty Williams-table decorations; and Dilys Smith-dessert.
See you on November 10th! Peace, Fay Cole

November Featured Artist
JANET WINTER is the featured CHS artist in the gallery for the month of November. Janet has been doing artwork all her life - happily progressing from Crayolas to oil, watercolors, ink, and colored pencils. She has won a number of awards and enjoyed several one-woman museum shows. Her first real success was in watercolor landscape painting.
Later came commercial work for several greeting card companies which included not only cards but also coloring book, jig-saw puzzles, calendars, and novelty items. Janet has also written and illustrated three Christmas books for children. Although for cards and prints. Janet is an inspiration - don’t miss this show!

As Uncle Sam used to say – WE NEED YOU!
Hopefully you recycle at home and know how it helps the environment. We have been recycling at CHS for about 6 years and it has had a significant positive impact.
We have a small team of faithful volunteers. But, we REALLY need additional people to balance the monthly assignments.
It is not a difficult task. Once every 7 to 10 days is usually sufficient to collect the recycles and bring them to your town's recycle center. If there is an activity that generates more recycled items, the office lets the team know.
There are two areas where recycled items are gathered at CHS:
1. Recycle bins located in the Parish Hall kitchen for plastics, glass, metal and cardboard.
2. The white container for recycled paper located in the hallway leading to the Church offices is the main vehicle for parish paper collection. A black plastic trash bag is put in this container. When collecting recycles, just remove the bag and insert another. Keep the original trash bag to reuse the next time.
We will gladly welcome anyone who can join the team and share the work. The best scenario is to have 12 people on the recycle team. Then each person would be assigned a specific month and would only need to do recycling 1 time a year.
PLEASE Consider helping with the CHS recycling. It is a small but important task to help our environment. For more information or to join the recycle team, contact Jack Sasso.

It may be surprising to learn that as many as 1 in 3 food insecure children on Cape Cod are not eligible for federal assistance from programs like Free/Reduced Price School Meals and SNAP.
Barnstable County’s high cost of living (recently indexing at 131.5 vs the US average) pushes more families to and over the edge than the USDA federal assistance criteria recognize. That's one of the many reasons Food 4 Kids has played such an important role for families for the past 10 summers. Our meals have always been provided free to all children, without qualification, without stigmatizing.
Picture to the left is Thank You art complements of the
children of the Harwich Summer Recreation Program.
Want to learn more about food insecurity in Barnstable County, or Massachusetts, or other communities important to you?
Check out Feeding America's MAP THE GAP.
This past summer 16 different community programs helped us serve 36,261 meals. That included lunch for 530 children/teens on average each day in July when all programs were running. That’s 83 more/day than last summer!
These community programs share our mission to provide free meals to all children each summer, and most have been with us since our first few summers, including Chatham Recreation, Monomoy Community Services, Brewster Day Camp, Orleans Recreation, Eastham Recreation, Truro Recreation and Provincetown Recreation. To see a full list of our recreation program partners, check out the latest Food 4 Kids email here.

BUILDING & GROUNDS
plus GARDEN PARTY UPDATE
| |
As many of you know, we needed to address the plantings around our solar field to meet the requirements of the Orleans Architectural Review Committee (ARC). With the recent work on the site, we have been able to send the following letter to ARC.
We appreciate your patience as we tackled serious erosion issues by being environmental stewards of our 4-acre site with a pandemic to boot.
We are finishing the terracing from Rte. 28 to the solar panels and behind the rectory.
We are going to have a planting event in March/April to plant the terraces with pollinating indigenous plants as a beautification extension of our stewardship. You are invited to come by any time, chat with Peter Jensen of Terra Firma, or attend our planting event.
Our vision has been to transform a hillside of invasive trees into a green environmentally friendly, sustainable, functioning and beautiful destination!
| |
Solar Field Terracing, Mulching, and Plantings
Our faithful Garden Party Team could not tackle clearing the overgrowth in the East Parking Lot due to lots of poison ivy and difficult access to places that needed significant clearing. So, we hired Azinger Landscaping to remove the growth and mulch some areas. Enjoy our "refreshed East Lot."

Homeless Prevention Council (HPC)
One of the several ways The Church of the Holy Spirit helps when people in our community really need help is through our Outreach Ministry. Recently several of us were treated to an uplifting meeting at HPC.
The CEO, Hadley Luddy showed us how our annual gift through the Outreach fund was used last year to help prevent 947 families from becoming homeless. When the pandemic and just “life in general” kicked the rug out from under their feet, not one of them spent any time in an emergency shelter.
The able HPC counselors helped those families access stable year-round housing, reordered their finances, sent their kids to school with a backpack full of supplies and stocked up their family pantries. While there we saw Mary O’Reilly from our parish who is working there on a newly inspired youth outreach effort.

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER GROUP
Due to Covid, the Wednesday Morning Prayer Service stopped, but we found another way to join in prayer once a week. Folks remain in their own homes and individually, as close to 9 a.m. as possible, read the selections for the day and offer prayers for each other, our families, our church members and any other needs of the world.
This is not via zoom... this is connecting through the spirit of knowing others are reading the same scriptures and joining in prayer at the same time... a very powerful way to worship "together."
If you want to join this group and receive the scripture selections, call or text 508-241-0357. God Bless!
| |
Please join the Book Discussion Group as we continue our discussion of This Here Flesh: Spirituality, Liberation, and the Stories that Make Us, by Cole Arthur Riley, Crown Publishing 2022. The book is available at local bookstores and on Kindle. We meet in the Fireplace Room after the service.
If you cannot be there in person, please email Brooke Eaton-Skea and she will send you the zoom link. Hope you join the group.

BACKPACK STRATEGIES FOR CHILD AND PARENTS
Read this helpful information on the proper packing and wearing a

COVID UPDATES
How tired are you of talking about COVID? We are, but we’re still talking about it! In response to several recent questions from parishioners, we want to remind you - the #1 most effective way to prevent severe illness from COVID-19 is to maintain up-to-date vaccinations and boosters.
Barnstable County COVID levels are measuring MEDIUM. What do we need to do now to protect ourselves and each other? The CDC recommends:
● Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines.
● Get tested if you have symptoms.
● Wear a mask if you have symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19.
● Wear a mask on public transportation.
● You may choose to wear a mask at any time as an additional precaution to protect yourself and others.
● If you are at high risk for severe illness, or if you have household or social contact with someone at high risk, consider wearing a mask indoors in public and taking additional precautions.

HOLY SPIRIT EMAIL COMMUNICATIONS
Holy Spirit uses the software Constant Contact to create and email our parish communications. These are all sent from Debbi Manning's CHS email account and include Together, Sunday and Tuesday Service notices, and all other important parish notifications. Each of us have a "CHS Subscription" to Constant Contact that supports sending all of these communications.
Your Constant Contact email account is an "all or none" subscription for CHS communications. If you move one of our emails from your inbox to your JUNK folder or you UNSUBSCRIBE from one communication, all future CHS emails will land in your JUNK folder or you will be totally UNSUBSCRIBED for future communications. So.....
PLEASE....JUST DELETE CHS EMAILS you don't want to read.
For example, if you don't participate in the Tuesday Healing Service, just delete the Monday service notification each week.
If you know someone who wonders why they don't receive our email communications anymore, have them contact Sue Sasso to get it resolved.

A FEW SMILES FOR THE MONTH
One More Thing!
At our farewell celebration for Gail Smith, our parish choir gave an outstanding performance of Brenda Ridgeway's parody of the famous song from Les Misreables... One Day More. Now we will always remember Gail+ fondly and her funny habit of having "One More Thing" to say during the service announcements.

I recently searched my photo library for pictures of Gail+ and Joe+ for the newsletters. I found these favorites from prior editions of Together to share with you again. Enjoy! Sue

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand;
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall;
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
