THE CHURCH

OF THE

HOLY SPIRIT

ORLEANS, MA

A MESSAGE FROM JOE+

I’m not much of a “Royals” watcher, but you’d have to be totally cut off from our culture not to have experienced at least a part of the ceremony and yes, the liturgy that surrounded the passing of Elizabeth II of England. Just as the Archbishop of Canterbury said, Queen Elizabeth exemplified the ideals of “Servant Leadership” that are essential to any mature understanding of the Gospel of Christ. This King of Glory ends his time among us by giving his life on a cross.

This modern-day human monarch did nothing that compares to that sacrifice, but she served all those years as England’s sovereign projecting grace and dignity. Her time as Queen was unprecedented in terms of the changing shape of Great Britain’s domain, India’s independence, the de-colonizing of Africa, two World Wars, and Britain’s changing place among the nations of the world.

What’s that old saying about knowing who someone really is by remembering who they said they were at first? Applied to her life, the world should have known that it was witnessing a different sort of leadership when, during World War II, she was found among other women who served as mechanics in the Royal Air Force. No Orb of Empire, no Royal Scepter or Crown of State, just a young woman in dungarees, handling a wrench (oops, spanner), with what appeared to be some natural aplomb, a sense of attention and intensity in the job before her, and a furrowed brow suggesting that not much got past her.

No mere photo opportunity, this grainy black and white photo introduced us to the woman who would be at the center of her nation’s story for all these years. I give God thanks for her resounding example of Servant Leadership. May we all learn something we need to learn from her life and times.

That said, I always find it moving to watch these services because of the common liturgical language of Anglicanism which, by virtue of an earlier queen, her namesake, Elizabeth I, was stabilized in the Act of Uniformity, requiring the use of a single prayerbook across the realm and creating the concept of Common Prayer. It is a gift I’ve often experienced, walking into an unknown church of our communion in some unknown city to hear the well-known words and rhythm of our worship being prayed by brothers and sisters we do not yet know.

So, we witness a nation in transition even as we ourselves are a parish in transition. These are times of deep feeling, new learning, and bringing the best of who we have been to meet the best of who we are becoming. They require considerable discipline, focus and trust. We will say goodbye to some and welcome others. We will learn new ways of doing things familiar to us. We will begin building trust and confidence in a new generation of leadership, “Servant Leadership” which will call us, by example, to serve one another and the people of God found all around us.

Finally, in transition we are reminded that while nothing, clad in our humanity, lasts forever while all the things that are eternal have been taught to us by beings clad in similar humanity, our continued influence and participation can last well beyond our physical lives by our participation in something larger than ourselves.

This is God’s call to community, which sets a table for all who will come, and welcomes all to a banquet that is both now and forever. May God bless us as we grow and change, make us patient with those around us, slow to find fault and quick to celebrate grace.

May we become the servants God needs and expects us to be, for the sake of the Church, the sake of the world, and the spread of God’s reign.

Joe+

A MESSAGE FROM GAIL+

Dear Holy Spirit Friends,

What can I say? Words escape me. Good- byes are never easy. I would rather say “until we meet again.”

The word gratitude comes to mind. There is so much for which I am grateful especially over these past years we have spent together. I am grateful for all your support, grateful for all your prayers. There is something about the time between the endings and beginnings which happen in our lives, it can be a liminal, even mysterious time.

Endings can come at times without warning. More often than not, there is this time when we know we are approaching an ending and we focus on that ending, the sadness of it, the missing in advance of those we love and care for, the finality of the door closing, and the keys handed in.

Inevitably there is also a wondering about what will happen next. With every ending there is always a new beginning. Sometimes we can prepare in advance for the new beginning, at least we think we can. Mostly we don’t really know what that new beginning will be like.

We might imagine it, but if we imagine in too much detail, there is always the chance our imaginings will not happen in the way we expect them to. Mostly, I think when we are looking towards any new beginning, we need to keep an open heart, and to step forward with our eyes wide open with wonder and trust that all will be well.

Thank you with all of my heart for everything. May God be with us all at the center of whatever our new beginnings will be.

Peace be with you,

Gail

FAREWELL CELEBRATION FOR GAIL SMITH+

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH

This Sunday, September 25, will be our last Sunday with The Reverend Gail Smith at The Church of the Holy Spirit.  Following the 10:00 service, there will be a pot-luck lunch and program in the Parish Hall.

Baked ham will be provided for our main course, and we are asking members to bring a dish based on their last name:

     A - G   Salad

     H - M   Side dish (not salad)

Hot dishes will be kept warm during church.

N - Z   Dessert (Plus we will have a cake!)

Please join us. You can drop off your food contributions in the Parish Kitchen before the service.

Any help during the potluck and clean-up afterwards will also be greatly appreciated.

WARDENS' MESSAGE

For the first time in many months, your Vestry met in-person in the Parish Hall for their regular monthly meeting on Thursday September 15th. The very special occasion was also the celebration of Gail's+ final Vestry meeting with us.

After feasting on pizza, salad, and several sweet desserts, the meeting was called to order, and we conducted our business.

Our treasurer, Chris Crighton, reported that August was a positive month, with overall income slightly ahead of our expenses for the year. Vestry members approved funding for remediating the basement area underneath the administrative offices and also for improvements to the basement of the rectory.

The wardens reported that our Letter of Agreement which includes Clergy Compensation details has been negotiated with The Reverend Patrick C. Ward and has been sent to our regional canon, The Reverend Kelly O'Connell, who will approve it and send to Bishop Alan Gates for his signature.

The wardens and treasurer met on September 9 with Patrick to begin his transition to his ministry here at Church of the Holy Spirit. We look forward to meeting somewhat regularly during the next few weeks. In addition, a Transition Team has been appointed to assist both Patrick and Roger with their move into the rectory. The team includes: Dianne Fromm (chairperson), Doug Fromm, Cris Harter, Cynthia Murray (Patrick's contact), Meg Nemitz (Roger's contact), and Brian Ridgeway (contact for basement renovations). In addition to making certain the rectory is ready for occupancy, they will help us welcome Patrick and Roger into our midst!

Each year as we look toward our annual meeting, we appoint a Nominating Committee to find candidates to join our Vestry as several members retire each year. This year's Nominating Committee is: Tom Dewing, Kathy Goddard, Page McMahan, Elizabeth Merritt, and Matt Thompson. If you have a recommendation for any of these positions, please speak to a member of the Nominating Committee.

The team responsible for developing procedures for improving our communication within the church and also to the greater community has been meeting somewhat regularly. Progress is being made on standardizing the procedures for updating the website as well as posting church highlights on Facebook and Instagram. You may have noticed that we recently started using the blue insert in our Sunday bulletins again to mark the difference between the service and the announcements.

In his Rector's report, Joe+ discussed with Vestry the plan to drop the mask requirement during church services but to designate the East transept as a space for those parishioners who wish to wear a mask and to be surrounded only by others with masks. He shared that we would be reintroducing the cup of wine during Eucharist and explained the procedures for that process.

As a special treat, Joe+ provided a moving tribute to Gail+ and the many ways she has served this community during her time here. We will all be delighted to hear this wonderful acknowledgement of Gail's service next week at our Parish Potluck and Celebration of Gail's Ministry--as he has promised to share his remarks with the Parish!

As the meeting wound down, Gail+ charmed us all with a poem she wrote about her retirement and step into the future. We're pretty certain she will share it with all of us on here last Sunday!

Peace (and hope to see you at the Parish Potluck!)

Brenda and Celia

LADIES' LUNCHEON

Special Luncheon in memory of

Betty Daiute

Thursday October 6, at Noon

Betty Daiute was a longtime member of CHS who died during Covid when we could not celebrate her life with a memorial service.

Betty loved coming to the Ladies' Luncheons. Her daughter, Ellen Daiute Sucretre, is hosting a celebratory Ladies Luncheon on October 6th, our usual meeting date, as a memorial for her mother.

Think about stories and anecdotes that involve Betty…things we can share with her daughter Ellen and with each other.

As usual, we will gather in the Parish Hall about 11:45 a.m., to greet Ellen, offer our assistance, and visit together before we sit down at 12:00ish.

Please join in and help us remember Betty’s life in our midst.

Lizzy is the youngest CHS teen to have a solo show in the CHS gallery. Please follow and support Lizzy on her art journey.  She is entering 8th grade she has just begun!

October Featured Artist

Laura Baksa is the featured artist for the month of October. Laura’s photo display, TOWARD THE LIGHT - WOODLAND SANCTUARIES, chronicles an exploration of the effect of sunlight on stone structures in Brewster woodland clearing.

I created the buildings over the last 10 years after many visits to ancient and medieval sites in Europe, studying and walking through various ruins. I wanted to hang on to the experience of singing in 11th century Gloucester Cathedral and being transfixed by the Gallo-Roman architecture of Carcassonne.

Reminiscent of ancient abbeys and fortress fragments, there are now four distinct stone structures that comprise a sort of pilgrimage trail through our back woods. As the buildings progressed over time, I experimented with gothic and rounded arched window openings but also with glass prisms and the effect of their refractions dispersed on the stone and woodwork. The effect is nothing short of magical and changes with the time of day and month of year.

The colorful prismatic rainbows produced have a life of their own and an infinite number of patterns. Unlike the more static experience of viewing medieval stained-glass windows, this is akin to watching the luminous reflection of celestial bodies moving in real time across the surface of aged stone.

I have read about the “awe effect” and this would be it for me - endlessly fascinating and peaceful. I believe there is an actual physical sensation from feeling the rainbows gliding over your hand - some may find it healing.

Anyone wishing to experience this phenomenon is invited to contact me or Joan Kirchner for a viewing on a sunny morning or at sunset in Brewster.

If you are interested in being a CHS Gallery featured artist, contact Sharyn Laughton.

BUILDING & GROUNDS

plus GARDEN PARTY UPDATE

September is upon us, leaves are turning, and gardens are starting to retire for the season. As we head into fall and winter, work is focused on cutting back and trying to stay on top of our beautiful but large campus.

If you have visited over the past weeks, you have witnessed the incredible transformation of the solar area and the rectory grounds as Peter Jensen continues his work. Solar Field Terracing Phase 1 is complete, and mulching will be finished by end of the month. Then we move to the area above the children's playground with additional terracing. Next month we will complete the project, including terracing behind the rectory down the hill to the wetlands and some final work along the steps leading to the rectory.

Thank you isn’t enough to all of you who have come to help with the countless bucket brigades. We should have kept count of the number of buckets of mulch and compost moved up the hill, I’m sure it’s immense!! You can look upon this with great pride and expectation of how we are now conserving what was dirty water runoff and now is filtering and helping our wetlands and future garden areas.

Our next set of workdays are:

October-22nd, Saturday

November-to be determined

Time: 9 a.m. - 12 noon Meet in the back parking lot

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER GROUP

Due to Covid, the Wednesday Morning Prayer Service stopped, but we found another way join in prayer once a week. Folks remain in their own homes and individually, as close to 9 a.m. as possible, read the selections for the day and offer prayers for each other, our families, our church members and any other needs of the world.

This is not via zoom... this is connecting through the spirit of knowing others are reading the same scriptures and joining in prayer at the same time... a very powerful way to worship "together."

If you want to join this group and receive the scripture selections, call or text 508-241-0357. God Bless!

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.

Bless and guide them wherever they may be

keeping them unspotted from the world.

Strengthen them when they stand;

comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall;

And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,

Abide all the days of their lives;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
