Together
NEW YEAR..... NEW CHURCH ART.... OLD NAME

In the 1950's, the first edition of TOGETHER, the Holy Spirit monthly newsletter, was published. When the pandemic prevented us from being physically together, in 2020 we began "Being Together...Apart" weekly electronic editions. In 2021, in-person worship resumed in the Parish Hall and we changed to monthly "Being Together... Again!"
When in-person worship in the renovated sanctuary began on November 7, 2021, we decided it was time to return to our roots in the new year..... so....

Welcome back to our monthly newsletter..... TOGETHER
with a new sketch of the North Entrance by Dan Joy, Vernon Smith's grandson.

A MESSAGE FROM JOE+
Epiphany – what’s the point of this season between the end of Christmas and the beginning of Lent?

In the Roman Catholic church, it isn’t even called Epiphany. Instead, it is of ordinary time, like the whole of the time between Pentecost and Advent. I don’t think that the lives of Christians are particularly enhanced by the presence of another 2 months of Ordinary time. Now, understand; just the fact that you don’t need more ordinary time doesn’t justify the season of Epiphany, so there must be something more.

Here’s what I like about Epiphany, the whole season. This is one of the main times for Education in the Church because it comes in time to prepare the Catechumen (those who are awaiting Baptism) for that sacrament on Easter Vigil -- the original date set aside for bringing adult converts into the faith. It is the mid-winter time when, at least historically, there has been less travel, less outdoor activity, less almost everything that would distract us from looking at our lives in this tradition of faith.

Mostly however, for me it is all about light. Religious people through the ages have been fascinated by the presence of light. At the temple in Jerusalem, there were all sorts of rules about keeping the oil lamps in the Temple burning. If this place of prayer was supposed to be home to Israel’s God, then some lights should always be bright so that it looked like someone was at home.

Even before oil lamps, the community’s place of worship was the place that you went to get fire if your fire went out at home. The fire of community was the source of the fire, the light at your own hearth. Light has held the attention of Christians in particular since the beginning.

I visited a beautiful church, or the ruins of it in southern Jordan many years ago. The roof was totally gone as were most of the walls, and you viewed the site from a stand that was over where the front door would have been. Spread out before you there on the floor was a remarkable mosaic depicting Apollo the great bringer of knowledge in his shining chariot, the Sun, drawn by war horses across every day’s sky.

Christians had no problem borrowing the image of Apollo to make the statement that we are in the pursuit of light – knowledge, security, clarity, truth, and that we believed we found that great light in Jesus of Nazareth. And what signs of light are imbedded in this season. It begins with the story of three learned men who follow an unusual star that leads them to the Christ child. It ends with the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration when his clothes and face take on an exceptional light and his inner circle of disciples see him as he truly is for the first time.

In between those two markers, Jesus turns water into wine, although somewhat reluctantly. He performs several healings, calls his disciples from the seashore, gets thrown out of his local synagogue, and begins to preach in the Galilean countryside. Epiphany is where most of the everyday-ness of Jesus’ life happens in scripture.

The point of all this for me is that Epiphany seems like where most of our lives take place too. We do get to experience the great lights from time to time and our job is to reflect that light into the places we work and live.

Remember: knowledge, security, clarity, truth? We don’t have to create the light ourselves. There is plenty of light in the story of Jesus for us to recognize that we are just responsible for spreading it around.

So, take this challenge seriously and discover how you can be a bearer of light to the people in your life. Pray for the people responsible for caring for the light in your own life and become that person in someone else’s life. "This little light of mine" isn’t really mine, and it isn’t really little, but I have a lot of say about where it shines, who warms in its glow, what it allows others to see in their own lives. This is the light of Christ, and we are its guardians in this mid-winter of our faith.

In its presence, may all people be drawn to this one we worship – God from God - Light from Light. May we see ourselves in God’s forgiving generous light, and may we keep this light burning for those who follow us.

WARDENS' MESSAGE
Your Vestry met on Thursday, January 20th with a very full agenda as usual! After an opening meditation from Jack Gentile, we jumped right in.

SEARCH COMMITTEE:
Cynthia Murray and Ike Cole, our Search Committee co-chairs, joined the meeting along with members of the “Profile Writing Team” (Celia Calhoun, Vestry members Priscilla Isner and Doug Fromm, and of course Joe+) to present the final draft of the Parish Profile. The team had heard from several parishioners who made helpful suggestions over the past week and included them in this final draft. The Vestry unanimously and enthusiastically approved the Profile with warm thanks to the team who made it happen. Now, the Profile is off to a professional graphic designer who will merge in photos from Kate Paradise to create a beautiful and appealing document.

What a great milestone reached in our search!

2022 BUDGET:
Chris Crighton led a discussion of the Operating Budget for 2022 which passed after considerable discussion. It was gratifying to be able to increase our Outreach budget for the first time in many years and to continue to support our programming with a minimal planned deficit but concerning that we do this with a higher draw rate on our savings than we have before.

This withdrawal is necessary and supportable in the short term but raises questions for
the future. The Vestry agreed to set up a small team to think through some key financial strategies and then to discuss them with the new Vestry in a session devoted just to that topic. Stay tuned for more to come on this!

NOMINATING COMMITTEE AND ANNUAL PARISH MEETING:
We reviewed and approved the Nominating Committee report, the Warrant, and other topics leading up to the Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 13 at 1 p.m..
For health/safety reasons, this meeting will be on Zoom, as it was last year, so we discussed some of the logistics surrounding that approach.

We will be sending out the Annual Report electronically and will supplement that with paper copies for those who prefer it. You will hear more about these logistics as we come closer to the meeting date. Please be sure to mark FEBRUARY 13 at 1:00 p.m. on your calendar right now; your attendance is so important to starting off our new year right.

OTHER BUSINESS:
The Vestry heard the plans to reopen the Free Shop in the near future. This critical ministry has had to remain closed for too long and we really look forward to reestablishing this vital support to our neighbors. [See Free Shop article below]

Finally, we spent some time on a Mutual Ministry review which was partly a look back over the last year to express our thoughts on Joe+’s time with us and to hear his thoughts on how our Vestry ministers to both clergy and the parish at large. There were also some questions to both clergy and Vestry about the future, our hopes, dreams, and concerns. It was a healthy dialogue, new to our Vestry, and one we hope to establish on a regular basis in the future.

This was a last meeting for Jack Gentile, Doug Fromm, and Steve Koehler, and the Vestry warmly thanked them for their years of service.

Peace,
Brenda and Steve
MORE BUILDING NEWS
Just when we thought we were done moving things around on our campus, the Vestry is looking at some further improvements to use our space better! A team including Joe+, Gail+, Sharyn Laughton, Joan Kirchner, Hannah Schneider, Brian Ridgeway, and Steve Koehler has met once and is filling in the details. Our goals are:

  • To improve use of our library, which is high quality but hidden in the lower level and rarely used.
  • To move Choir robing and music storage into the sanctuary building (no more running across the courtyard in rain and snow!).
  • To provide some additional storage space for the Galley West Art Gallery.
  • To recommend best use of any freed-up space.

Although our work is still continuing, we expect to move the library materials to a combination of the Sunday School rooms for children's materials, the Fireplace room and Reception room (some have already been moved there). We also expect to be able to accommodate the Choir’s needs in the church lower-level spaces and current library room. We do not expect this project to be very expensive. The first steps quickly identified were the need for a very healthy cleaning-out operation in the music storage files and in some of the lower-level storage areas. Look for more information to come.

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
Please refer to the Wardens' Message above for the Search Committee update.
CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS
The surge in COVID cases, and especially the increase in pediatric cases and hospitalizations, caused the Church School Team to
re-evaluate continuing in-person church school. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the well-being our children and their families, we suspended in-person church and childcare. The date for resuming our normal church school schedule has not been determined but we are hopeful that it will be soon.
Spirit Stories - Santa gave Ruth Campbell several new books she wants to record for future Spirit Stories. If you have experience with "I Movie" software or can record her on your smart phone and convert it to a YouTube video, we can include these fun and enriching videos in future editions of Together. Please contact Ruth! She's waiting for you!
ONLINE GIVING
Making a Recurring Gift to the Church

Our online giving has developed a good following, but many more could benefit from the ease it offers. This past year, 50 Holy Spirit members used online giving to contribute a total of $44,946 to the church, almost twice as much as contributed online last year! Of those, 11 members made it even easier for themselves by setting up a recurring donation. You can, too!

You can find our online giving form here right now, or look for the green GIVE NOW button on every page of the Holy Spirit website.

When you are ready to make an online donation, choose “Recurring,” choose the fund (2022 General Giving & Pledge), fill in the dollar amount, choose the frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually), and choose the start date. Click “Submit” and you’re done! If you haven’t already set up an account with your payment information, you will be prompted to do so. That information is not shared and is secure. Then just sit back and relax, knowing your financial support for the work and ministry of Holy Spirit will happen, uninterrupted. You will receive a confirmation email each time a payment is made, and your online contributions will be included on your Holy Spirit Giving Statement.

Why not set up a recurring payment for Holy Spirit now: just click here.

LADIES' LUNCHEON
As with many other parish activities these days, there will be no February Ladies' Luncheon. We will let you all know when we can resume our fun gatherings.

COVID HEALTH
Is anyone experiencing COVID exhaustion? We are! But the CDC’s advice still applies: “The best mask is the one that is worn consistently and correctly.”
●       Covering both your nose and mouth, secured under your chin;
●       Fitting snugly against the sides of your face with no gaps, with nose wire to prevent air escape.

FREE COVID-19 TESTING AT THE ORLEANS DPW: Barnstable Country Department of Health and Environment is now offering free drive-through Covid-19 PCR testing at the Orleans DPW (40 Giddiah Hill Road, Orleans) Testing takes place every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Massachusetts remains under an indoor mask advisory. While we hope that the post-holiday Omicron surge has peaked, the Barnstable County positivity rate over the last 14 days is still on the rise at 20.09%. (Mass DPH COVID-19 Dashboard as of Jan. 19.)  Check out these links for the latest CDC Mask Updates this month:

Let’s keep on keeping each other safe and protected while indoors together. Even if fully vaccinated and boosted, transmission is still possible especially for our most vulnerable. Watch out for yourself and for your neighbor, what we do best at CHS!
Thanks, from the Health Ministry Committee

CHS HEALTH MINISTRY
Greetings from your Health Ministry committee. We’ve decided to try something new, and hope you find it useful. Over the next year, we’ll be bringing you a series of health-related topics and each subject will run for 3 months. We hope you find this fun and useful. This quarter’s topic is The Environment and Health.

Here we are, mid-winter, but never too soon to think about our gardens, yards and the warm seasons coming soon. Most of us are aware of the Cape’s water supplies being fragile. Are you a gardener? Aren’t we all stewards of the land? How do our actions and practices impact our water?

There are several areas you may want to explore: use of pesticides, herbicides, & fertilizers; use of native species that thrive in our environment and require less water, chemicals; planting with seeds that have not been chemically altered.

We present these 3 organizations as a starting place to learn more on these topics.

Learn about your watershed by exploring Barnstable Clean Water Coalition whose mission is “to restore and preserve clean water throughout Barnstable”: https://bcleanwater.org/resources/watershed-maps/

The website Beyond Pesticides, has an enormous number of helpful resources, but this month the focus is on seeds. Yes, you can buy untreated, organic seeds. Check out this list of vendors across the country, maybe one will be of help to you.

Here’s a local website: Cape Cod Native Plants.org. It’s an online tool to “help you find the native plants best suited for specific sites…” You can search for plants based upon 6 criteria. The pictures and descriptions are great!

As always, we have a great agenda! In fact, we have an Agenda tailored to Newcomers and Veterans alike.
  • We will start with Deanery 101, presented by Kelly O'Connell, Our Canon. She will discuss roles and responsibilities and explain acronyms and Diocesan Structures.  This is very important as we progress to the program.
  • We will hear the latest news from the Dean and the Diocesan Council.
  • We have a very timely program, now that WE have adopted a new Mission Strategy:
Mission Strategy: What Next?
Presented by Andi Taylor and Hilary Greene

Come at 6:30 pm and introduce yourselves to each other.

During this Assembly, it is very important that you say your Name, your Parish, your Role, and your message when you speak.

Equally important:  We need a Treasurer. The duties are not onerous and instruction will be given. Join the Deanery Exec.

The ZOOM Invitation will be sent next week. IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THE MEETING, contact Celia Calhoun or Kate Paradise for the Zoom Meeting login.

NAUSET INTERFAITH ASSOCIATION (NIA)
If you missed the online MLK Breakfast, “Justice is What Love Looks Like in Practice,” you can still watch it on the NIA website (nausetinterfaith.org). Parishioners who have seen it give it a top ten rating! It is a little over 90 minutes long. Hopefully, next January we will be back in the CHS Parish Hall for this wonderful event!

You can also sign up at the NIA website for another webinar, “ What A Difference A DA Makes,” which takes place on Wednesday, January 26th at 6 pm. This explores the critical importance of the District Attorney (DA) on Cape Cod. We will be electing a new DA this year for the Cape and Islands.

Several years ago, the Refugee Support Action Team of NIA reached out to an asylum family from the Democratic Republic on the Congo, Tony, Joelle and Pearl N’tumba/Sifa. They actually have been to Holy Spirit several times. Joelle very much needs a car. If you know of anyone who might be willing to donate a used car, please let Ken Campbell know!

Lastly, if you think you might be interested in participating in one of the NIA action teams or task forces, please see my report in the CHS Annual Reports for 2021 which will be available before our Annual Parish Meeting. Thank you.   Ken Campbell+
THIS AND THAT.... From Sue
In her Sunday, January 23rd sermon, Gail+ shared as she was reflecting on Martin Luther King's legacy, a couple of inspirational songs had been going through her mind....
Somewhere from West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and You'll Never Walk Alone from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel.

I grew up in a Broadway Musical filled home. We'd play all the 33lp show soundtracks and sing along. These are two of my favorite songs and I realized I knew all the words to them as well.... and Gail+ was right! They are extremely inspirational and filled with great life advice. So, just in case you don't know the words.... here they are.... enjoy
From the mouths of children to God's ears! Very insightful!
Amen, Elliott
Hmmmm. How are YOU helping God love everyone?
