A MESSAGE FROM JOE+
I pray that you are able to focus a bit on the disciplines of Lent, though I recognize it is harder to remain focused with Pandemic questions and war in Eastern Europe. Still, like the seasons of the year, the seasons of the church march forward as if under their own power.

During this season when we begin to see the first signs of spring, it is appropriate that we are in a waiting mode in the church as well. A few more weeks and we can leave the desert of temptation for the powerful stories of Holy Week, (Passiontide to some of us) that retells the stories of Jesus’ last days in Jerusalem.

We’ll shift from Lent to Passiontide on Palm Sunday, April 10th this year, as we gather with our own Palms to re-enact the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

The Way of the Cross is a spoken processional liturgy that picks up the story from there during Holy Week:

  • Monday - Wednesday gather at 5:00 p.m. to take part in the Stations of the Cross,
  • Then, on Thursday at 5:00 p.m., we will remember Jesus’ last meal with his followers in an upper room, the washing of feet, and Jesus’ being taken captive in the Garden of Gethsemane.
  • On Friday, we will keep the devotional service of Good Friday at 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday is a day of rest in this busy week at least until late afternoon.
  • On Saturday evening, our Great Vigil of Easter will begin at 7:00 p.m. It begins with the kindling of a New Flame, the singing of the Exsultet, and hearing portions of the Salvation history from Hebrew Scripture. The middle portion of the service is a Baptismal Liturgy. Even when we have no one to baptize, we reaffirm our own Baptismal Covenant in preparation for the Feast of the Resurrection. The Final part of Saturday’s service is the First Eucharist of Easter.
  • Easter Sunday Services are Scheduled for 10:00 a.m. after which we will take part in an Easter Egg hunt on our campus for the children and Coffee Hour in the Parish Hall.
 
Okay - that was a lot to say, but it is always good to be reminded of the schedule. There are some other devotional opportunities that will be offered. More about these will be published in the Sunday announcements as we get closer.

What I really want to remind you about. however, is the sense that this whole week is more like one story laid out over eight days, beginning with processions and palms and ending with Resurrection.

What a joy it will be to have these services in person again!! The services of Holy Week stand as an annual reminder of who we are, of what values we hold dear, and what it means to be bound in community by the love of one who lays down his life for us.

Easter changes everything! There is no simpler or more complete way to say it.

But to be a part of that change means that we need to take our part in the opportunities of the week. It will be a lot. We will be tired at the end. But these are the very services that have formed every generation of Christians from the seventh century until now. You are likely to learn new things about the church, the scripture, and the God we worship. And... you are likely to learn something new about yourself as together we walk this pilgrim way.

WARDENS' MESSAGE 
The CHS Vestry met on Thursday, March 17th via Zoom. Tom Dewing led us in a meditation by Dallas Willard on St. Patrick’s Breastplate.
 
·     Jack Gentile presented a report from the Financial Sustainability sub-committee, demonstrating an online tool for strategic planning that might also be useful for other groups.
·     Ann Pike-Paris presented a report from Peter Jensen [Terra Firma Permagardens] on Erosion Mitigation in the area of the solar panels. The plan includes terracing on the hill behind the rectory. Members of the Vestry will be visiting a local site with similar terracing.
·     Chris Crighton reported February was an excellent month financially. Pledge income continued strong and expenses were in line with budget expectations. The church maintains a healthy cash balance to cover expenses. The Vestry thanked a parishioner who donated a generator suitable for the rectory.
·     Joe+ reported on the fabulous job done by Chris and his team sorting out the Attic and reducing 40+ boxes of old financial papers to 4 while keeping the necessary 7 years of financial records; Gail+ and her team sorted the rest of the “stuff” in the Attic, all now happily ensconced on shelving.
·     Joe+ reported on new, slightly more relaxed guidelines on Covid protocols. He talked about the two groups doing work on our future together, Strategic Planning for Sustainability and Mission Strategy and how they might intersect at some point. 
·     Joe+ also shared plans for Lenten Wednesday gatherings for supper, prayer, study, the labyrinth, and plans for Holy Week.
·     Vestry Liaisons to various groups were announced (i.e. Affinity groups that grew out of the Re-imagining Project in 2018) including changes for Hospitality, Outreach and Creative Arts. The new Liaisons will introduce themselves to the relevant groups. We are planning a Ministry Fair for Sunday, May 22, more information next month.
·     On Sunday March 13th we had our first coffee hour in ages. All wore name tags to help the newer people. If you cannot find your name tag, please let us know. COME AND JOIN US ON SUNDAY!
·     Celia Calhoun presented the current state of the CHS response to the Diocese/Deanery Mission Strategy document. This will be shared at the next Deanery Assembly on Thursday, March 24th .
·     Various Vestry members gave Liaison reports: The vestry continues making phone calls to active members in the parish. If you have not been contacted and would welcome a call, please let the office know. 
·     Outreach Committee reported CHS sent a donation to the Endoputo Schools in Tanzania. We also sent a donation to be used for food and clothing in Poland for Ukraine Refugees. Outreach Committee members were asked to contact their local agencies to assess needs on Cape Cod as basic cost of living has increased dramatically the past month.
·     The Search Committee has received some applications from candidates for Rector. The position is advertised and open for applications until April 20th.
 
Joe+ closed the meeting with prayer, focusing on the plight of the Ukrainian and Russian peoples.

This will be a time for us to gather together for conversation,
share a simple meal and conversations about prayer.

Soup and Bread will be served at 5:00 pm.
Please call the office if you plan to attend the dinner.
 
Our classes on Prayer will be from 5:45 pm – 7:00 pm.

Our class time the 1st week will include an introduction about prayer with opportunities during other weeks to explore different prayer disciplines experientially.
One of the ways to pray is by using a labyrinth. One week we will have one of our labyrinths set up in the room.

The class will be available for those who choose to join us on Zoom.
People at home will receive finger labyrinths to use at home for that class.

 Please contact the church office to sign up for the supper and the class. Those online will then receive the zoom invite.

Come join us as we go deeper together into Lent.

LABYRINTH DURING HOLY WEEK
The labyrinth will be set up the Parish Hall for Holy Week - Palm Sunday through Good Friday. On weekdays you will access in the Parish Hall to walk it between 9:00 – 2:00. Leaflets with suggestions for your walk will be available near the labyrinth.

Labyrinths were often used as a way to walk a Pilgrimage without traveling to far off places. They can be a way to center ourselves during Holy Week. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the labyrinth, please contact Gail through the Parish Office.

UNITIED PEOPLE FOR KIDS
Friday April 15th

Our walk will resume, after a two-year pandemic hiatus, to raise money for so many families with special needs kids who, during this pandemic, need our help more than ever. 
We meet at the BIBLE ALLIANCE CHURCH, on Route 6A in BREWSTER on Good Friday at 8:30 a.m. The walk will start at 9:00 a.m. and progress through Nickerson State Park.

The Search Committee is excited to have begun receiving applications for the job as our new Rector. We are carefully reading resumes and other materials and sharing our thoughts with each other. The deadline for applications is April 20.  After that date we will decide which of the applicants we wish to interview. Church School is back to meeting in Person!! Yay!
We sure have missed you!

EXCITING NEWS: On March 28th Georgia Schneider and Susan Owens will give our students a chance to learn how to create their own crosses Kimball Guild Style! They will be guided in the Traditional way that Florence Kimball was taught by Vernon Smith to make their own hammered aluminum art!   If anyone else has a talent they would like to share with the Youth, please let us know! 

The Church school will also participate in their own Labyrinth during this season of Lent.

EASTER EGG HUNT: April 17th following the 10:00 AM Easter service! Eggs for filling by parishioners are in the reception room. (PLEASE - all items in eggs need to be NUT FREE and individually wrapped.. small toys are also great!)

Shrove Tuesday Virtual Pancake Supper Update
The Church School and Youth Group held a virtual Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday. A small but enthusiastic group of parishioners gathered for some fellowship and fun and to share their creative pancakes.

Hurray! We were able to have our Ladies Luncheon in March! Although many people seemed to have medical appointments that day, we still had full tables and a restorative time together.

Now it’s time to plan for our gathering on April 7th. After a short discussion, we decided to continue to bring our own sandwich and drink, but to reintroduce potato chips, centerpieces, and colorful paper goods to make our time together more festive. Of course, we’ll have dessert as well!

Volunteers for April 7th are: Andi Stubbendick - Chips; Ginny Lucil - Paper Goods; Georgia Schneider - Table Decorations; Elizabeth Merritt - Dessert.

We all welcome the return of in-person worship in the sanctuary. The services are inspiring and the music inspirational. But these services don't "just happen!" Many volunteers contribute their time and talents preparing and helping us during the service.

Two of these ministries are asking you to consider joining their teams...Altar Guild and Ushers. Please read the descriptions of what each of these entails and then contact Barbara Wahlquist to learn more about Altar Guild and Phil Suraci for the Usher Team.

What is Altar Guild?
Simply put, it is a volunteer group of parishioners whose ministry is to care for the altar vestments, vessels and altar linens. Altar Guild members prepare the sanctuary for services and clean up afterwards. Mary Magdalene has often been called the patron saint of altar guilds because she went to the tomb to prepare Christ’s body, just as the Altar Guild does when they prepare the altar every week.
 
Altar Guild ministry is a special and holy offering to God. Please consider joining our team for one Sunday a month. You will be paired with another guild member. All ages (male and female) are welcome. It’s a fun group.

Usher Team
When you attend a service at CHS, you are welcomed by one of our ushers who are there to help you find a seat, make sure you have a service bulletin, and guide you to the communion rail. They will also be "passing the plates" during the offertory.

Several of our veteran ushers have 'retired' for a variety of reasons and we need to build our team back up so hopefully each usher only needs to "work" one Sunday a month. We work out the schedules months in advance and manage changes the best we can.

If you already attend Sunday services at the church, please consider joining this important team. It's not a difficult 'job" but an important one. No meetings, just one Sunday a month. Phil Suraci will provide training and will make sure new ushers are assigned dates with a veteran.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
On Sunday, March 27 the Book Discussion Group resumes meeting in the Fireplace room after the Sunday Service. THE STORY OF THE SOLAR FIELD

At the annual meeting, questions were asked about a number of recent projects carried out on our campus. I welcome the opportunity to respond through Together.

One area mentioned was how the solar field came to be, why we have it, what it cost us, etc. I came on board after the project had begun, but I will try to outline for you how the idea developed and became a reality, and how it works.

FOOD 4 KIDS
Summer Update – What Do We Know?
We know all our sites from last year are ready and eager to return! We have been meeting with each one, from Harwich to Provincetown, and everyone is looking forward to a fun filled summer with lots of children, free meals, and free books. A great combination! Food 4 Kids will officially start on June 27 and run through August 26, with most sites starting July 5 and running for 6 to 7 weeks.

We don’t know what the USDA rules will be that govern how and where we can operate and still be reimbursed. For the past 2 summers the USDA has waived almost all of their rules. We could go wherever we needed to, whenever it worked best, and provide meals in whatever way that met the needs of families and their children (stay-and-eat or grab-and-go). Extending those waivers another year is still being debated by Congress, and frankly, it looks like an uphill battle to keep them.

We know that whatever the USDA rules are for this summer, we will work hard to continue to serve meals at ALL of our sites. According to Feeding America, food insecurity among children on Cape Cod increased 33% from 2019 to 2021, due primarily to COVID, and economic conditions for families are not improving, especially with inflation now added to the mix.

GARDEN PARTY UPDATE
It’s official spring is here as of March 20th! Ready to get together? Make the CHS campus shine? Or at least rake and pick up branches. Hopefully, the answer is yes!
 
The Grounds schedule for Garden Parties is beginning and we’d love to welcome anyone who has never joined in, please! You really do not need to be a gardener, we are happy to instruct, guide and help with what’s needed the most.
 
All you need is appropriate clothing and shoes, any tools like a rake, gloves, clippers and a bucket for cuttings is always helpful.
 
Here’s the plan so far: meet in the back parking lot, assignments will be given, and stay for as long or short as you can. I’m setting up 2 days a month for 3 months, then back to once a month starting in July.
Time: 9-12
April 4th (Monday) & April 23rd (Saturday)       
May 2nd (Monday) & May 21st (Saturday)
June 4th (Monday) & June 18th (Saturday)

 It’s a wonderful group who really, really need YOUR help. Remember just bring you, your tools and enthusiasm and a beverage as needed. We welcome you to join us!

CENTERING PRAYER: We are meeting in the sanctuary at the Federated Church of Orleans on Mondays, and the Reception Room at CHS on Thursdays. We meet at 4:30 p.m. on both days and we do not meet on holidays.

SUNDAY'S GLIMPSE OF THE GOSPEL: The Gospel speaks to us today personally and as a community. Join us Sundays at 8:45 a.m. to delve into the Gospel and pray for one another. We meet in the Fireplace Room and via Zoom. Please contact Gail+ for the Zoom link.

WHEN THE CHS PARISH OFFICE IS CLOSED, please feel free to drop off any items or pledges in the black mailbox outside of the office door in the courtyard. The office is open Monday - Thursday 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

UPDATED PARISH DIRECTORY: We no longer include member's personal contact information in our communications. Stop by the when the parish office is open to pick up a copy of our updated Parish Directory...or call the Parish Office and we will snail-mail you a hard copy of the current Parish Directory so you can "stay in touch."

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER GROUP: The CHS Morning Prayer Group prays on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. from the comfort of their own homes. Contact Richard O'Hara and he will send you the coming month's scripture readings for Wednesdays.
