HSNBA NEEDS HELP NOW!

Each year, our Executive Director and Board of Directors work hard to create a reasonable and practical budget for the following year. During the fall of 2024, we looked at the last 4 years of donations and made the conservative estimate that we would collect $575,000 in donations in 2025. However, to date, we have only collected barely $185,000 in donations and we are quickly going into the RED.

These two kittens were spayed yesterday at our weekly spay and neuter clinic prior to adoption. During the procedure, the veterinarian noticed their insides were not quite right... their abdomens were full of a weird gelatinous substance indicating they have Feline Infectious Peritonitis (or FIP for short).

This USED to be a terminal illness for cats but in recent years, there have been great strides in very effective treatment and the veterinarian thinks they are GREAT candidates because we caught it so early.

After a consultation between the HSNBA Executive Director and the Veterinarian, we decided to pursue treatment for these kittens, which will be an expensive medication taken daily for the next 45 days. After that, the kittens are expected to grow up healthy and happy, leaving this once terminal condition behind them once and for all.

While we don't have a cost estimate yet, we knew we were determined to save them and will figure out how we would pay for it later.....

While we are in ACTIVE and ROBUST negotiations with our City and County Partners to increase their contributions, currently, our Municipal Contracts are only paying approximately 60% of our total operating budget and the other 40% is reliant on gifts from our community.

How can you help? There are SO MANY WAYS, but what we need right now is MONETARY DONATIONS. We are well aware that the instability of the economy is forcing all of us to tighten our belts, but if you can consider a gift - NOW IS THE TIME.

Donations can be made online, in person or through the mail. We are located at 3353 Morningside Drive, NBTX 78132. We can even receive credit card donations over the phone by calling us at 830-629-5287 (Press ZERO to speak with our amazing staff).

If donating is not an option for you right now, please consider FOSTERING or VOLUNTEERING as the gift of YOUR TIME is just as valuable as your monetary donation.

If these things are not an option for you but you are a resident of the City of New Braunfels or Comal County, please consider emailing or calling your elected officials at the New Braunfels City Council or the Comal County Commissioner's Court to voice your SUPPORT of increased funding for HSNBA.

One of the most expensive things we do is care for ill and injured pets who enter our shelter. Currently, we have over TEN Heartworm Positive dogs in care right now and their treatment - even with our generous discount with our vet of record, averages about $800 per case. In order to begin treatment, these dogs MUST secure a foster home prior to starting treatment, some of these dogs have already gotten lucky, some of them have not. We are truly hopeful that we can indeed find a soft place to land for all of these dogs, but we are looking at at least $7,000 worth of vet bills to cure these heartworm cases.

Meet Rockie Road

Rockie was adopted from us as a kitten in November of 2024 but came in as a stray at the end of July. Of course, due to his microchip, we were able to call his adopters immediately.

Sadly, his adopters had moved to Oregon and he had apparently escaped the house right before they moved and they were unable to locate him prior to their move. Reclaiming him was simply not possible.

When Rockie arrived, he had a nasty abscess on his hind end which got immediate vet care, but after 10 days of pain meds and antibiotics, he was still not putting weight on his back leg so back to the vet he went. It was then discovered that something must have attacked him - causing the abscess - but also damaging the nerves so badly the only way we can help him is to amputate that back leg. This is another costly surgery but this cat is so amazing, we simply cannot consider NOT helping him.

Animals in Care

We currently have 430 animals in care, 255 under our roof and 175 in foster care. We have 28 employees working their fingers to the bone - putting the emotional, mental and physical strains of working in an animal shelter aside to give their all to each and every animal who lands on our doorstep. We are currently saving 93% of the animals who enter our shelter. Remember, we have no control over who enters our doors, 7% are so badly injured, ill or behaviorally challenged that euthanasia is the only humane option.

Check out this adorable video of a group of kittens seized during a hoarding case. They have all now been spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated and are ready to find their forever homes!
