A Baby, A Rent Gap, and the Help that Made All the Difference

In February 2026, Grace, her husband, and their 7-month-old baby were on the brink of eviction after falling behind on rent.

Grace had been working at a restaurant, but when her employer refused to allow breaks so she could pump breast milk, she was forced to leave the job. She quickly found new work at a supermarket, but the temporary loss of income created a gap the family couldn’t recover from on their own. At the same time, Grace’s husband—a painter—was experiencing the usual winter slowdown in work. He began driving for DoorDash to help make ends meet, but it still wasn’t enough. What began as a short-term setback quickly turned into a housing crisis.

That’s when Grace reached out to Catholic Charities East Bay.

She was met with care and understanding by Delia, our dedicated housing case manager, who worked quickly to help stabilize the family. Through emergency rental assistance, Delia secured two months of back rent and one month of future rent—$5,505 total—allowing Grace’s family to stay safely in their home and focus on moving forward.

Stories like Grace’s are becoming far too common. For many hard-working families, it only takes one unexpected crisis to throw an already tight budget off balance.

Because of you, Catholic Charities is here when families need us most. With your support, Delia and our housing team continue to walk alongside neighbors across Alameda and Contra Costa counties—helping families like Grace’s remain housed, safe, and hopeful for what comes next.

Building Bridges of Compassion Across Our Parishes

N2N All Saints 3
N2N All Saints 8

Catholic Charities continues to gather with parish communities across the Diocese of Oakland through our Neighbor to Neighbor events — most recently following the 11:00 a.m. Mass at All Saints Catholic Church in Hayward. We're grateful for Father Ramon Gomez's warm welcome and support for making the gathering happen.

After Mass, parishioners enjoyed a light lunch and warm conversation while learning more about how Catholic Charities serves families and individuals throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties. These gatherings are a meaningful way to connect faith with action and to invite parish communities into deeper partnership.

At All Saints, we also shared news about the relaunch of our Parish Ambassador program. Parish Ambassadors serve as a vital bridge between their parish and Catholic Charities. They help share our mission within their parish community and, just as importantly, help us listen — ensuring we understand the unique interests, strengths, and needs of each parish we serve.

As needs continue to grow across our region, Parish Ambassadors play an important role in educating, engaging, and elevating opportunities to make a local difference, living out Christ’s call to love and serve our neighbors in need.

To learn more about becoming a Parish Ambassador, speak with your pastor or contact our Development Team at 510.350.6177. You may also email Mari Mosca at mmosca@cceb.org.

Together, we can strengthen our parishes, support our neighbors, and build a brighter future for our entire community.
