A MESSAGE FROM PATRICK

Like! Love! Haha! Wow! Sad! Angry!

For most of its existence, Facebook has offered its users “emojis” corresponding to six emotional responses. In March of 2020, as COVID progressively locked us apart from each other, the platform introduced a seventh: a benign almost-smiley face clasping a red heart to signify “I care.”

Facebook’s habit-forming ubiquity among adults over forty (younger folks have largely migrated to other social networks) means that its response options are consequential. Is Facebook subtly training users, I wonder, to limit reactions offline to one of its seven? What about “ambivalent”? Or “numb”? Or “overwhelmed”? Or “exhausted”? Or “I haven’t yet formed an opinion”?

Several years ago, coming out of church onto Copley Square, I overheard in passing a fragment of an argument between a man and woman who appeared to be a long-term couple. “Listen,” she was saying to him with both affection and irritation. “Just because I agree with you doesn’t mean I can stand listening to you right now!”

Which emoji could possibly capture the richness of those words? At the heart of our faith is an understanding, increasingly counter-cultural, that we are called to love those with whom we do not agree. Perhaps the inverse is true as well: we are free to declare “enough already!” to those with whom we are deeply and affectionately aligned.

As I write, a number of prominent American college campuses are witnessing protests against institutional investment in Israel and U.S. government support for Israel’s war against Hamas, a war in which, according to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a child in Gaza is killed every ten minutes. At Yale, university police have cleared a student encampment. Media are barred just now from Columbia’s campus. At MIT, students of various faiths and convictions have broken bread together at a Passover seder, unified by a common desire for an end to all violence in the region. At Tufts, campus communications staff have assured the Boston Globe that protests continue without disrupting classes or other campus activity.

Is support for Israel just now tantamount to support for “genocide”? Is any critique of Israel antisemitic? Emojis are useless in response to such questions. Perhaps like me you tend to retreat from impassioned conversation about Israel, Hamas and Gaza just now for fear that you will come off as under-informed, insensitive, or framing a response that’s somehow (heaven forefend!) “inadequate.”

Since October 7, though, I’ve returned in prayer again and again to a single short line from scripture: “For He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). With these words Jesus invites us out of certainty and partisanship and into a different order of clarity. Within the span of an afternoon I myself am fully capable of being evil, good, just and unjust. If I can live with such complexity in myself, I must live with it in the actions of my neighbor as well. Or sometimes, as Jonathan Chait writes today in New York Magazine, “sometimes basic humanity means seeing both sides.” Chait goes on to offer the following three clarifying precepts:

1. Terrorist attacks on civilians are wrong.

2. Israel has a right to self-defense that is bounded by a requirement to minimize civilian casualties.

3. Bigotry against Jews, Muslims, or Arabs is categorically wrong.

I've been sickened by the accounts I've read of the October 7 Hamas attack. I lament Israel’s lethal mode of self-defense, and I lament at the same time a world in which such defenses are understood as necessary. I cannot compress these feelings and convictions into an emoji (I Care! Sad! Angry!). I can, though, offer them to God in prayer. And if we continue to witness to each other a church Spirit characterized by trust, generosity, and nonjudgmental curiosity, we can share and receive between all of us feelings and convictions which emojis can’t quite honor.

O God, in whose image we are all fearfully and wonderfully made. We pray for all those in Palestine and Israel caught up in the bombing of Gaza and attacks aimed at Israel. We pray particularly for children, for those who were trapped in the rubble, those injured and those who cannot sleep at night for fear. Hear us, God. Graciously hear us.

Faithfully,

WARDENS' REPORT

Last month we were just moving into Holy Week when Together was published. Patrick led us in varied, interesting and moving services. For many of us, this was a profound experience, and we recommend that you attend these offerings next year if you missed some this year.

Having celebrated Easter in glorious style, with abundant singing of Alleluias, we quickly moved to the Confirmation and Reception Service with Bishop Alan Gates presiding. At the celebration which followed, we honored Bishop Alan Gates’ last visit with us before his retirement in October of this year.

Patrick, Meg Nemitz and Celia Calhoun attended presentations for Earth Day on Saturday, April 20th, at St. Mark’s in Southborough, and they will be reporting back to the Creation Care group that met together last month.

Together was published a week early in March and before the Vestry meeting. That Vestry meeting began with a discussion with Jenn Gale, the new director of Food 4 Kids. She gave the Vestry an update and asked for their input on some new ideas for this year, including hot meals one day a week, and "grab and go" meals available at the church. Priscilla Isner gave an overview of the Pastoral Care Ministry, ten parishioners who meet monthly. They stay in communication with about twenty parishioners who are unable to come to church and provide meals for them when needed, prayer shawls, Eucharistic Visits, cards, and prayers.

This month we met as the Buildings and Grounds team completed several projects: new plantings in solar field, rebuild of bell tower, painting of the Memorial Garden walls and railings, new hand-carved (by Susan Hitchcock) parking lot signs, and the parking lot has had its cracks filled prior to re-paving and re-lining – excellent progress! John Harter (Treasurer) reported that the 2023 Holiday Bazaar net income was $8,829, and the 2024 Good Friday offering was $627, designated for the Diocese of Jerusalem.

The Vestry will be on retreat on May 10th and 11th, with a potluck dinner on Friday evening, ending with Compline. There will be a working session on various topics on Saturday. Please keep all of us on the Vestry in your prayers as we prepare for this retreat.

The Rummage Sale is coming right up on May 3rd and 4th - see elsewhere in Together, and please get involved! There is much work to be done in donating items, sorting them and pricing them. Please drop by from April 30 to May 4 and offer your donations and services!

The Outreach Fair will be held on Sunday, May 19th, with Hadley Luddy, from Homeless Prevention Council, speaking during the Sunday service. Please join us and learn about the local agencies we support through the Outreach Committee.

We are trying to keep in touch with newcomers! If you are new and feeling at a loss, please contact Patrick, one of the Co-Wardens, or a Vestry member. Our photos are posted on a noticeboard in the Parish Hall. We are trying to get to know you all – it is a wonderful challenge!

And, as always, thank you for your prayers and support!

Celia Calhoun and Priscilla Isner, Co-Wardens

DEANERY NEWS AND BISHOP ELECTION UPDATE

The Deanery met via Zoom on Thursday, April 11, at 6:30 pm. Business included voting on the proposed slate of members who will make up the Deanery Nominating Committee in anticipation of the Cape & Islands Deanery election on May 30. DIOCESAN CONFIRMATIONS & RECEPTIONS

Saturday April 13

We welcomed Bishop Alan Gates, as well as our sister congregations in Chatham and Falmouth as teens and adults renewed their commitment to our faith. Six teenage confirmation candidates and seven adult reception candidates from our parish prepared and participated in this wonderful celebration of faith. Congratulations to one and all!

Enjoy these photos taken by Kate Paradise of our joyous celebration.

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? WE WILL!

Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

BUILDING AND GROUNDS

Greetings from the B&G Committee

We have had a flurry of activity repairing and replacing systems and elements on our beautiful CHS campus this past month.

  • We finally solved the heating/cooling irregularities in the admin building thanks to the diligence of our intrepid Dave Blanchett and Mark Butler, our new HVAC contractor.
  •  We have begun work on the Parish Hall condenser farm and will have completed work in mid-May. See picture below.
  • The Memorial Bell Tower has been repaired and now sits resolutely ringing out sweet bell tones. See picture below.
  •  We have begun repairing the parking lot.
  • 1st step was to repair the many cracks in the pavement completed on 4/17/24.
  • The next stage will be to resurface the parking lot and then finally to re-stripe it.
  • We will notify the congregation when the campus will be closed for the 2-3 days needed, sometime in mid-May.
  • Peter and Lynn of Terra-Firma have planted 65 bearberry plants on the solar field terraces and the remaining at our new entrance terraces. Thank you, Lynn & Peter. See picture below.
  • The memorial garden has a new coat of paint in anticipation of a much-needed renovation and makeover. More to come as exciting plans develop. See picture below.
  • Please note the new hand-carved parking signs done by our very own Susan Hitchcock, as well as the many building signs she is repairing. Thank you, Susan.

 GARDEN PARTY UPDATE

Next Party is Saturday, May 18

March and April certainly have been full of spring showers, but the good news is the gardens are starting to burst! We’ve dusted off our tools and held our first Garden Party on April 8th, and we finished before the eclipse!

Thank you to Chuck Dow, Lynn Van Norman, and Meredith Perkins for putting in such a great effort, and to Roger Lovejoy for treating us to his famous banana bread!

Peter Jensen and Lynn Van Norman also completed planting 65 bearberry plants on the terraces. Be sure to check them out. If you haven’t walked the campus of late, treat yourself to a full spin around. Can you spot the two official Pollinator Pathway signs as we are now ‘official’? Click here for more information on the Pollinator Pathway.

The rectory stairway, solar fields, and of course, the terraces showcase the work we've showcased to qualify as an official Pollinator Pathway. We also have a variety of hellebores tucked into spaces like welcome surprises…can you spot any?

Our next Garden Party is set for May 18, so please come and enjoy. After all, dirt is good for us!

CO-SPONSORED HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

HOUSE IN BREWSTER UPDATE

The Habitat Build co-sponsored by CHS is well underway.

  •  Outside walls are shingled.
  • Inside walls have wallboard installed, spackled, sanded, and primed.
  • As of Saturday, April 20, flooring was being installed by a work team from a local Rotary.
  • CHS will have its next workday sometime this summer. In the meantime, several CHS volunteers have joined other work teams as individual volunteers, and several members continue to lead the devotions which are part of Habitat work days.

There is an old saying that goes… “A picture is worth a thousand words.” With that in mind, during Coffee Hour, check out the Habitat pictorial display in the Parish House and you will see ten thousand words.

HEALTH MINISTRY

APRIL is National Donate

Life Month!

Did you know that more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for life saving organ transplants, and about 5,000 of them live here in New England?

Learn more about how to register as an organ and tissue donor, to be added to the National Donate Life Registry, by clicking on the links below:

REGISTER NOW - New England Donor Services https://neds.org/register-now/

A donor card is no longer necessary. If you’ve registered already through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, which you can do anytime, you’ll notice a red heart or other “donor” symbol on your license.

New England Donor Services recommends that everyone who registers as a donor has a discussion with their family about the decision to donate.

We on Health Ministry are always glad to hear from you with any health topics of interest. Reach out anytime with questions or suggestions!

The CHS Gallery artists for the month of May are the

Grandfather and Grandson woodworker team

Gilbert Oliveira and James O'Reilly

View an array of carvings, including birds, figurines, caricatures, and canes made by hand over the last 30 years. With an interest in carving upon retirement, Gilbert’s late wife, Diana, surprised him by signing him up for a class at a local community center.

After starting out with carving miniatures, Gilbert soon outgrew simple designs, as he started to fine-tune his skills and explore various styles. He joined a local carving group and with his mentor, June Noll, learned how to achieve complex designs and impressive bird types.

Some of his favorite works include an Osprey mid-hunt, Sandpiper, Eagle, and Red Tail Hawk.

Gilbert later shared his passion with his grandson, James O’Reilly, who also has works showcased in the gallery this month. James and Gilbert have both won accolades for their work at various carving shows.

GOOD FRIDAY WALK THANK YOU

There it was--at the top of every poster I put up every year for almost 40 years.  There it was-right below the date. A promise… non-negotiable…no options...  “Rain or Shine”

There were many years when we had the threat of bad weather, but I held fast to my faith that we would have a walkable Good Friday. There were also moments when my faith faltered, and I pictured a Good Friday with downpours, where no one showed up except my wife, myself, and a few volunteers.

Well, Good Friday 2024 was a true test of that faith. As I set up the walk in light to moderate rain in the early hours, I still had faith that, by the time of the walk, things would clear. Instead, things got worse, and, by registration, it was close to a full-blown Nor’easter!! Could this be the day of my worst Good Friday nightmare, when my faith faltered, and all hope was lost??

Then-something amazing happened!!

Despite the foul weather, people began showing up. Soon, the church foyer was filled with people as on any other Good Friday! We had decided earlier to set up the refreshment station in the foyer where the few brave souls who chose to walk could find coffee and doughnuts and warmth after their ordeal. We also absolved the station volunteers from their duties, not wanting them to stand in a downpour for two hours.

There may have been 35 to 40 people who came out on that rainy Good Friday morning and more than two dozen who set off into the rain and wind to walk for Jesus. I expressed my astonishment to Katie, a friend and a veteran of more than twenty walks. As she headed out, she countered my look of disbelief by saying, “This is a small sacrifice compared to what Jesus did for us.”

She put everything into perspective and brought tears to my eyes. It turned out that we had close to as many kind and generous donors as in past years, and we are on track to help ten to twelve families this year!!

My gratitude and pride went over the top for all those who walked and volunteered that day! For all those who freely donated, prayed, and wished us well, and for our host and supporters at Cape Cod Bible Alliance Church, thank you with all my heart!!  We could not have done this without all of you!

This also was, once again, a gut-check to my faith. Though I prayed hard and often for clear weather, God answered my prayer in a wonderful way. He showed me that kindness, love, generosity, and sacrifice are not weather-dependent.

I was also gently reminded to trust in God and have faith, for at times, that faith may be rewarded in ways beyond what we might expect.

Thank You all again and God Bless You!!!!!!!!!!

SUNDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

We continue our discussion of The Fractured Kingdom by Jean-Pierre Isbouts (2023) Here's a description:

Brilliantly tracing Jesus’s vision for the 'Kingdom of God' from its origin up through modern times, Dr. Isbouts leads us to a possible antidote for the fiercely partisan moment in which we find ourselves: the Our Father. Then taking readers on a historically exhilarating tour of the Lord’s Prayer, The Fractured Kingdom shows us why the only doctrine Christians agree on might be our last hope for forging a more equal, compassionate, and loving society. What results is an eminently readable and undeniably essential work that addresses some of the most pressing issues now confronting communities of faith around the world.

This book has also been recommended by Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry.

Please join our discussion on Sundays after the service, or after the program following the service. We meet in the Fireplace Room. If you would prefer to join us on Zoom, please contact Brooke Eaton-Skea. Thank you!

RECENT DEATHS

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.

Bless and guide them wherever they may be

keeping them unspotted from the world.

Strengthen them when they stand.

comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.

And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,

Abide all the days of their lives.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
