Welcome
Roger and I were late converts this summer to the Orleans Firebirds. When we arrived with hundreds of others at Eldredge Park on the evening of Sunday, August 13 for their championship game against the Bourne Braves, we scanned the hillside in search of a place to park our folding chairs. We haven’t yet mastered the local custom of claiming seating “the morning of.”
Firebirds mascot and CHS parishioner George Hoskey, drenched on this sultry night under layers of furry scarlet fabric and woven yellow leggings, came to our aid. “You see that woman in the red tee shirt four rows back from the first base line? She usually has some extra space. Tell her George says ‘hi.’”
The woman in red turned out to be George’s wife Curry. Summer residents, the Hoskeys live and work as educators for the rest of the year in Maryland. Warm and authentic, Curry was the best possible guide to Cape League baseball in general and the Firebirds in particular. Her questions to us were curious but never invasive. George and Curry love the Firebirds. And when you’re in love with something, sharing that love is a contagious joy. Next year, Roger and I will be back.
Continuing to reflect on George and Curry’s welcome to us, I’m thinking about those to whom “welcome” is a way of life....
Of parishioners who habitually bring a second sandwich to Ladies' Lunch (“there is always someone who forgets…”).
Of the late Jacob Neusner, prolific Judaism scholar and professor of religious studies at Brown when I was a student there in the 1980’s. Neusner was much discussed on this predominantly liberal campus for his conservative views on feminism, affirmative action and the environmental movement. And he was also well known for this habit of bringing a second folding chair with him to the campus green, where he liked to work in fair weather. The understanding was that anyone was welcome to sit with him and chat.
Perhaps some of us are wired to orient in this way – reflexive anticipation and welcome of to the stranger. For more of us, though, the habits of welcome are habits we cultivate as the Spirit guides us more and more out of the self – the progression at the heart of religion’s purpose (“Enlarge the place of your tent,” says God to the Israelites in Isaiah 52. “Stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes”).
We use the term “spiritual disciplines,” after all, for a reason. These arrive and evolve because of initial commitment, practice, trial and error. The prophet’s language is less about being something understood as “nice” than it is about decision, calculation and activity.
How would your own life “stretch out” if you committed in the coming year to meeting one new person at church every Sunday?
One of the reasons I’m taken with Mary Parmer’s book Invite, Welcome, Connect is that it understands parish growth not as a “program” or a “strategy” but as a spiritual call which makes all of us new. You may have been part of an initial parish foray into “IWC” on three Sundays this past winter. With summer now passing, it’s time to go deeper together into this work.
To that end, we are planning a working potluck supper on Thursday, September 28 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm in the Parish Hall. To learn more about this evolving ministry, and to reserve a place at the table, please email me (pward@chsorleans.org). All are welcome!
See you in church!
Patrick

The Vestry did not officially meet during the month of August, but will meet a week early in September, on Thursday September 14th.
Life at The Church of the Holy Spirit has been as busy as ever: services, coffee hours, Food4Kids, the Free Shop, the Ladies' Lunch, many committee meetings, gardening, and the list goes on. We hope that your summer has been a happy one and that you've been able to enjoy some of the beautiful weather we have experienced here on Cape Cod. The heat and rain have been a bit much at times, but we and our gardens rely on both, too.
While Patrick is away on vacation, we have been so fortunate to have The Reverend Liz Tunney filling in. Please join us in welcoming Liz as we listen to her words from the pulpit and as she shares Eucharist with us!
As summer blends into fall, we encourage you to attend the Eucharist service held in the church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday mornings. Experience a shorter service with a brief meditation on the Saint of the Day. (Your visitors are also welcome, too!) There’s always something to think about as you return home. The service is followed with healing prayers for those who wish.
A group of ten parishioners from CHS attended two Habitat for Humanity house blessings in Chatham on Monday, August 21 along with about 70 others, including the new owners and the many volunteers, who had been in involved in the projects over the last 18 months. We were invited in to tour the beautifully finished houses., Flowers were donated by various local organizations, and three beautiful handmade quilts were presented to each families which were lovingly stitched by several local quilting groups.
It was a special warm gathering and celebration, setting the stage for CHS's Habitat for Humanity build in Brewster scheduled to begin this fall. Stay tuned for more details on that exciting project and how you can participate.
We look forward to the fall season with many opportunities to gather and celebrate our lives together.
Thank you for your support and prayers,
Brenda Ridgeway and Celia Calhoun, Wardens.

IN HOME PARISH GET-TOGETHERS
Our Invite-Welcome-Connect Committee has organized get-togethers for the entire parish in various parishioners’ homes in late September or October.
Patrick will attend each one and looks forward to sharing this time with every one of us! We have spread these gatherings out geographically across Eastham, Orleans, and Brewster and offer a variety of dates, times, and potluck meal options—tea, hors d’oeuvres, or dinner.
Please visit the sign-up table in the Parish Hall after church on Sunday to sign up for one of these events to get to know each other and Patrick better!
Please contact Cynthia Murray or Brenda Ridgeway if you have further questions.

BAZAAR BUZZ
NOVEMBER 4, 2023
| |
The November 4 Holiday Bazaar is about two months away!
We have a great team working on the bazaar. If you would like to help and be part of this fun team, please contact Nancy Boccia.
| |
In the meantime...
Here are ways everyone can participate
and make OUR Parish Bazaar a huge success!
Homemade Food Items: We are known for our wonderful food table. Here’s how you can support this popular bazaar feature with your homemade items.
The Great Cookie Challenge is back!
Last year we all donated over 1,000 home baked special cookies. These were beautifully packaged and sold as an assorted “Cookie Walk in a Box” All sold!
Let’s do it again and more! If 50 of us make only 2 dozen cookies, that would be 1,200 delicious cookies to sell.
Garden Harvest
When you make jams, jelly, pickles, canned tomatoes, soups from your garden harvest set some aside for the bazaar.
Baked Goods
In addition to cookies, pies and special breads or other baked items are very popular.
Clearly label/mark your food donations with ingredients. Consider making some Gluten Free options?
Want to make things in advance but don’t have room to freeze to store items? Let us know and we will store at CHS in empty Food 4 Kids refrigerators/freezers until the bazaar.
Jewelry: We are looking for donations of costume and better jewelry. Donations may be dropped off in the church office. Please provide information about better pieces so we price them appropriately. Include your contact information if you need a receipt for better jewelry donation tax deduction records!
Gift Baskets: We are selling tickets to win gift baskets we donate. You can fill your own basket or donate some items and we will create a basket. Baskets with themes are popular (bird watchers, cooking, reading, teatime, travel, etc.) Use your imagination! If you create your own basket, provide a list of items included. Let Cris Harter or Priscilla Isner know what you will do. They will wrap and decorate the baskets. Questions? Ask Cris, Priscilla or anyone on the bazaar team.
NOTE: WE NEED YOUR BASKET ITEMS BY TUESDAY OCT. 10TH.

“Honour the Lord with thy substance and with the first fruits of all thine increase;” Proverbs 3:9
This is an old CHS tradition we brought back this year. Our gardens are bursting with produce and flowers. Please bring your donations Sunday mornings to the table set up in the Parish Hall. Use the free offering jar for your monetary donations that will support local charities.

Food 4 Kids Made a (very short) Movie! We hope you enjoy our story ... told in just 2 minutes. Click here to watch and perhaps learn something new about why we do what we do AND how we make it happen. Share it with friends and others who might be interested in finding out more about Food 4 Kids and the work we do!
All who prepare, pack, and deliver the meals knew Food 4 Kids was doing more this July than ever before. And we were right! We served 74 more lunches and 117 more snacks each day, on average, than last year. That’s 11,500 free lunches and 13,500 free snacks served to children in July!
And this month, a big Thank You to our unsung heroes – our Recyclers! Dedicated volunteers load up their trucks and cars with piles of recyclables almost daily and take them to their local recycling center, saving F4K trash disposal fees and saving the earth.
And be sure to read the latest complete Food 4 Kids Newsletter here.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
Brian Ridgeway and Ann Pike-Paris
| |
Have you taken time recently to stop and smell the roses? If you haven’t, then make time to stroll the peaceful and fragrant CHS grounds. You won’t be disappointed, especially with the new fences gracing it all. And the SOS projects (rectory, solar fields and hillside behind the playground) are being cleaned and maintained by Peter Jensen.
On a very happy note, our August 19th Garden Party was a huge success! Why? We had three new volunteers!! Welcome to Donna Bailey, Lillian Kuo, and Susan Quirk!! It was a gorgeous Cape Day and so much work was done in almost every area of the campus. Yes, we have pesky areas, and yes, these require more expert help than our volunteers can take on, but they will be addressed!
The scope of the work was immense, from trimming bushes along sidewalks and the Memorial Garden, weeding Izzy’s Alley, cleaning the stairway to the rectory, maintaining the fish-pond and Memorial Garden fountain, and adding mulch.
Thank you to our team for the love and caring for our grounds this month:
Donna Bailey, Celia Calhoun, Ike and Fay Cole, Diana Crighton, Chuck Dow,
Rich Gregory, Susan Quirk, and Brian Skea. And a special thank you to all who come in the “off hours” to help.
Come join the fun and fellowship on any of the remaining Saturdays:
September 23rd, October 14th, and November 18th.

A BABY CENTER (ABC) NEEDS YOUR HELP!
A Baby Center (ABC) is a non-profit group on Cape Cod whose mission is to serve without judgement the youngest in our community. A Baby Center supplements critical basic needs that ensure the good health and safety of babies who live on Cape Cod and the Islands. These services are provided at no cost to clients and without regard for religious preference or lack thereof.
ABC gave out 435,225 diapers last year to support low-income parents raising babies on Cape Cod and the Islands. Diapers go with wipes and they gave out 62,672,400 individual wipes during 5,803 client visits last year!!
Thanks to local churches, organizations, individuals, and businesses we were able to support these families! With a Grateful Heart. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
PLEASE consider purchasing packages of diapers and wipes. Put them in the large wooden trunk in the main foyer of the Parish Hall, and we will deliver them to ABC.
If you have any questions, talk to Bill and Margaret Anne Heuss.

CHS is blessed to have many wonderful pieces of art on display. These are found throughout the church as well as all of our campus buildings.
We are photographing each and creating a catalog with item descriptions. This will allow us to create a 'Tour of Art at CHS' guidebook that can be used during our annual Holiday Bazaar and at other appropriate times.
If you have any information about pieces of art on display, or other CHS artifacts, that we could add to their provenance, please send or give that information to Jack Sasso or talk with him about it.

We wish everyone a safe and fun summer. With so much going on at CHS, we’ll see you at church! First Aid kits are stocked throughout the campus; we hope we don’t need them! Keep the list of helpful heath resources handy! Happy Summer!!

SUNDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
On August 20, we began our discussion of a new book,
Why Gather? The Hope and Promise of the Church by Martha Tatarnic.
From her introduction: "...my...hope for you, the reader, is that the stories that form the core of this book of God at work in real flesh and blood lives will sharpen your own senses in their awareness of God's presence and activity...The church has seemed for several generations now to be on shaky ground...And yet the reality of God's love and presence in the church and in our lives is unshakeable...and forever reminds us who we really are."
The discussion is open to everyone (you and your friends); Please order the book from your local bookstore or online, start reading, get a snack at coffee hour, and join us in the Fireplace Room after Sunday Service (when there no other scheduled coffee hour events in the Parish Hall.) Come whenever you can make it!

A ROBIN'S STORY - by Suzy Gray
On July 18th, I dropped off clothes to the Free Shop, and at the last minute felt I should use the side door to exit to get to the top parking lot. (Divine Intervention)
There in the dirt and hot sun was this tiny, featherless baby bird who I thought was already gone...then he or she moved! I ran inside, grabbed a box and a roll paper towels.
Back outside, I gently lifted its frail body into the box, making sure there was enough paper towel underneath so it could be easily lifted out. I headed to the kitchen door to show F4K volunteers working and to request they please be on the lookout for more chicks.
I drove to Wild Care Center at the Eastham Rotary and left them the bird and a small donation. They told me it was an American Robin baby. I went back to church to look in the nest to make sure there were no other babies to be rescued. Guess this baby was the sole nest survivor.
On August 4th, I nervously called to check on our church’s American Robin using the Intake Number they had given me. And Yes!! He or she had not only survived but had become a favorite at Wild Care with a “very cute little personality!”
They also mentioned that one eye was injured, but it may heal. If not, because he or she is so friendly and came in so young, it would become an ambassador bird at Wild Care!
I asked if they’d named it? Not yet, they were trying to think of one. I told her that I’d found this baby bird at my church, and I suggested Lazarus if it's a boy (she loved the name and got the meaning) and Hope or Faith if it’s a girl. It will be a little while longer before they can determine if it’s a M or F.
What would we do without Wild Care and their team of caring wildlife rehabilitators and interns?

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand.
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives.
