Keeping Lent in Threes
We Christians gravitate to threes. Our "triune" God is the source from whom all blessings flow. It's a configuration sometimes shown to us in an icon of three angelic visitors calling on Abraham and Sarah near the Oak of Mamre at Hebron. Scripture doesn't tell us there were three kings seeking a newborn Jesus, but centuries of tradition and art have assigned them that number. The Paschal "Triduum" spans Maundy Thursday through Good Friday to Easter. Three nails. Three hours. The more we look the more we see.
It was once suggested to me in Lent that I think of my own life of faith as something that best lives in triplicate: in private prayer, in the context of a continuing small group, and in a congregation including strangers. Others are necessary. Simply put, they can guide us to places we could not reach on our own. Solitude is necessary for the prayer, discernment and study that common life may derail.
It's about the parish hall and the solitary hike. The inconvenience and flexibility that "life together" asks of us, and time alone with a book, an icon or silence.
Reading and praying with a published daily reflection, often in the early morning, is a practice many of us embrace in this season, or year-round. Two very good sources are the American Franciscan Richard Rohr and the Center for Contemplation and Action, which you may visit HERE or Sister Vassa Larin, an American-born nun of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) whose daily reflections on scripture ("Coffee with Sister Vassa") may be found HERE.
Additionally our Labyrinth will be available in Holy Week (Tuesday through Friday, 8:30 am - 3:00 pm), and we will offer some teaching and sampling of this personal mode of worship on Saturday, March 16 (9:30 am, Parish Hall).
For many of us, small group life is a present and continuing facet of our life at The Church of the Holy Spirit. If you're not yet part of a team, Tuesday Lectio Divina (10:00 am prayer and Bible study on Zoom), Sunday morning "Glimpse of the Gospel" (9:45 am, Fireplace Room) or Thursday morning Holy Eucharist in the East transept of the church (11:00 am) are opportunities for exploration. We are assembling a team of twelve to assist onsite at our Habitat Build in Brewster on the morning of Saturday, March 9. Finally, remember that weekly worship on Sunday is the foundation of our common life. There is no better season in which to recommit to this weekly practice of sharing Eucharist with friends and strangers.
On Palm Sunday (March 23) at 3:00 in the afternoon, we'll be joined by best-selling author, memoirist and historian James Carroll. His timely topic will be Lethal Texts in Holy Week: reckoning with Christian Antisemitism.
Our plans for Holy Week also include Holy Eucharist on Tuesday and Wednesday (10:00 am) as well as Maundy Thursday (7:00 pm), Good Friday (12:00 noon), Easter Vigil (7:00 pm), and Easter Sunday (10:00 am) services.
So be alone. Be with a group. Be with others you may not yet know. Wherever you find time to pray and learn in this holy season, God will be with you.

Thank you all for coming to the Annual Meeting. We easily met our Quorum (75 members), and we wardens (old and new) felt that the meeting went well, and good questions were asked. If you have any further comments or questions, please let us know. We would love to hear from you.
Many of you have joined Patrick’s classes on Faith Fundamentals, which we are all enjoying. Please remember that this will be followed by the Deanery Confirmation Service and Reception on April 13 here, at CHS. We will have several parish members being confirmed or received.
We had a beautiful and moving Sung Evensong service on February 4. If you missed it, you missed a gem! Please plan to attend the next one!
For us, January was all about the Annual Report for 2023 and the Annual Meeting. Our new Co-warden, Priscilla Isner, left for a trip to the Antarctic soon after Annual Meeting, returning last Sunday, so we are looking forward to working together this week!
Our Leadership team has been working hard on the Parochial Report for 2023, which documents everything the National Episcopal Church can think of to ask each parish. The report contains eight pages of questions describing our finances, worship services, clergy, membership, pledging, outreach, and ministries. Many of the questions require considerable research. The Vestry has approved it, so the document will next be reviewed by Patrick and Priscilla, certified, and filed on time.
Our Vestry met on Thursday, February 15, in a hybrid (Zoom and in-person) meeting. Earle Bailey and Sarah Gregory were welcomed, and the meeting proceeded along the usual topics: Meditation, Minutes, Treasurer’s Report, Warden’s Report, Liaison Reports, and Rector’s Report.
We have scheduled a Vestry retreat in April. We have updated the assignments of Affinity Group Liaisons. These will be visible on the Vestry photo board as soon as we have the new photographs printed and the board updated.
The Outreach Fair, involving many of the local agencies to whom our Outreach Committee gives our money, has been scheduled for Sunday, May 19. Discussions on reorganizing the management of Food 4 Kids are proceeding well, though decisions were not yet final at press time.
We hope that this Lent is fruitful for you all and that we all grow in the ways Patrick is guiding us. If you missed the service on the first Sunday of Lent (last Sunday, February 18), we recommend that you watch it online and listen to Patrick’s sermon.

We have a number of exciting and important deanery and diocesan events coming up! Please read on and mark your calendars …
- The next Cape & Islands Deanery Assembly is on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 pm (Zoom).
- This will be followed quickly by the Deanery confirmation service hosted here at The Church of the Holy Spirit on Saturday, April 13 at 10:30 am.
- Next up are Diocesan Meet & Greets (conversations with those nominated to be our next bishop) that take place throughout the diocese the week of May 6-11.
- On Saturday, May 18, delegates and clergy will convene to elect our next diocesan bishop.

- Saturday, October 19 marks the consecration of our new Diocesan Bishop at Trinity (Copley) Church in Boston.

MARCH 7 is our next Ladies Luncheon. Please mark it on your calendar and plan to join us. If you are new, it might take a time or two to be really comfortable, but we would love to welcome you. Invite a friend.
We bring our own sandwich or salad, and we have potato chips, coffee, tea, and dessert provided. We meet a bit before 12:00 for conversation and setup in the Parish Hall. There is no agenda, but conversation is lively as we meet and catch up with each other.

Hello all - we have a short list of news to share this Month.
February has been a quiet month. We are delighted that some of our youth will finally be able to have Confirmation class. It has been a long time since the church was able to offer one. Patrick + will be teaching this class, and the actual Confirmation will take place on April 13 at Holy Spirit.
The scheduled Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper had to be postponed... again! (This happened last year as well). The Thompson family was well prepared with prizes for
Best Apron and Most Skilled Pancake Flipper. Good food was just waiting to be served. We will cross our fingers and hope for better weather next year!
It has been a welcome sight to see our Church Schoolers aiding in the service on the Fourth Sunday of every month! From ringing the bell, passing the offertory plate, and sharing the readings.... they take these jobs seriously and joyfully!
In preparing for Lent and Holy Week, we will be joining the congregation in the Palm Sunday Procession around the church.
We hope to see you all March 31 at the Sunday Easter Service followed with an Egg Hunt after the service. Parishioners can look for the trunk with plastic eggs to fill (non- peanut items only please) in the upcoming weeks! We appreciate your help!
Also, join us after the Easter Sunday service for an Eggs Benedict Breakfast sponsored by the Parish Youth. All are welcome. Look for the signup later in March!

The tools are in storage, the gardens are still asleep, but…the invasive plants never stop!
This is the tale of two trees…and the ivy that did them in.
Have you noticed we are minus two large locust trees in the back parking lot? Sadly, these trees had become unsafe due to years of ivy growth around their trunks. If you didn’t know, English ivy, no matter how pretty, is an invasive species for us. As it grows, the dense growth can block the sun and add weight to the branches making them vulnerable to wind during severe storms.
Over the next garden season, the Garden Parties will work on the rest of our trees being encircled by the green vine. We’ll follow the instructions from our arborist to protect both the tree and ourselves.
Tip: to start, the best approach is to sever the ivy around the tree, about 3 feet up but LEAVE the upper ivy alone, it will die off, and you can damage the tree’s bark by pulling it off. Next, digging out the roots around the trunk should prevent it from growing back.
Additionally, we will soon be replacing four of the six condensers and air handlers in the Parish Hall to ensure continuous heat and cooling as the current equipment is aging out. The equipment has been ordered, and we are awaiting installation.
Just finished was a walk around and inspection of our ADA automatic power doors. They are fully operational, thanks to Wayne, Ann Pike-Paris, and our contractor from Dorma. Thank you!

CO-SPONSORED HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
HOUSE IN BREWSTER UPDATE

The Habitat house co-sponsored by CHS is well underway. Walls are up, windows and doors are in, the roof is shingled, and rough electric and plumbing has been completed.
Next is the shingling of the outside walls. This is where CHS volunteers can participate. A CHS workday is scheduled for Saturday, March 9.
It will be a half workday, beginning at 7:45 a.m. and ending somewhere around noon. We are scheduled to have about 12 volunteers.
Those interested will need to complete an Annual Waiver form and a CORI form (background check). The forms are available in the Church Office anytime and will be accessible at Coffee Hour on Sunday, February 25.
Forms need to be completed and returned to the Church Office no later than noon on Tuesday, February 27. Completed forms will be delivered to Habitat’s Yarmouth Port office by the close of the day.

OUTREACH - ENDUPOTO SCHOOL UPDATE | |
Here’s a link to an 8 minute video (skip ad at start) you might find interesting. It was produced by Bill Lord, retired ABC TV news executive producer, who traveled with Holy Spirit Member Cheryl Kyle's January 2024 Tanzania safari that included a visit to the new school year on opening day.
Cheryl has been instrumental in helping the Endupoto and the Maasai people improve the education opportunities in Tanzania.
You’ll see how Endupoto Primary School has grown from one classroom in 2008 to a full campus in 2024.

IT'S TAX SEASON....
DO YOU NEED HELP FILING YOUR TAXES?

Since 1968, AARP Foundation Tax Aide has provided free tax help to over 75 million taxpayers with a focus on older adults and those with low to moderate income.
Tax Aide has 21 sites on Cape Cod and the Islands staffed with volunteers trained and IRS certified every year to make sure they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to both Federal and Massachusetts tax codes. Almost all tax returns are completed and electronically filed the same day. These sites will open in early February 2024 and be open by appointment only until the end of tax season in mid-April 2024.
Holy Spirit members, Diana Crighton and Donna Bailey, are Tax-Aide volunteers.
Diana will be at the Orleans COA, and Donna will be at the Eastham Senior Center and the Chatham Community Center.
Other tax-aide centers are Provincetown Council on Aging, Truro Council on Aging, Wellfleet Adult Community Center, Harwich Council on Aging, Dennis Senior Center, Yarmouth Senior Center, and Barnstable Adult Community Center.
Please contact your local senior center to make your no cost tax preparation appointment. Many sites fill all their available appointments quickly as this is a very popular service providing quality result.

* The Free Shop has 20 volunteers who work once a month in the shop that is open every Monday and Wednesday -- 10 to 1.
* The Free Shop served approximately 200 good people in 2022 - over 300 good people in 2023 - expects close to 400 in 2024.
* The Free Shop is still gratefully accepting your WINTER clothing donations and has begun to collect clothing for SPRING.
* The Free Shop does not accept men’s suits and yucky shoes!
* The Free Shop has gone “green” - we are always in need of brown paper shopping bags with handles.
* Suzy Gray recycles everything!
* Suzy Gray and Gray deliver donations to Nauset High School.
* Wayne Curry “creates" the Free Shop every Monday and Wednesday by rolling clothing racks, tables, and bins into the Gathering Room on the lower level of the Parish Hall.
* Your clothing donations can be dropped off into bins located on the lower level of the Parish Hall by the elevator.

CHS Gallery artist for the month of March is Kate Paradise.
Kate has been creating photographic images for well over half a century. Specializing in landscapes, seascapes, flora and fauna, her images combine light, color, and composition that result in creative and captivating visions of our natural world. “Crossing Thresholds” is a collection of images from her recent journey to Iona (Scotland) and Iceland.
Artist Statement
I believe photographic images can provide an opportunity for meditation, contemplation, and conversation, perhaps evoking memories, stories, or observations of the divine that is in all of us. My hope is that “Crossing Thresholds” can provide a space for dialog and witness as they relate to our own expressions of vision, hope, and possibilities – as we journey through this Lenten season individually and together in beloved community.
