Presenting the Presentation
In the early hours of March 18,1990, thieves removed thirteen works of art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, including paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. To this day, their frames stand empty.
I give thanks that the thieves overlooked a small painting displayed on a nearby tabletop: Giotto's rendering of The Presentation of Jesus at the Jerusalem Temple, painted around 1320. An image is included above, but the Gardner website lets you zoom in close HERE.
Giotto shows us Mary and Joseph on the left, handing Jesus over to the prophets Simeon and Anna (who, Luke's gospel tells us, is "in the temple night and day"). It's an image suffused with a natural sweetness that doesn't cloy; the infant reaches back toward his parents even while snagging his other hand in Simeon's beard and nostril.
The Feast of the Presentation on February 2, unlike Christmas, actually arrives "in the bleak midwinter" and for pre-Vatican II Roman Catholics marked the end of Christmastide. Old European legends tie the Feast to what we now mark as Groundhog Day. Other legends warned the faithful that if they continued to display Christmas greenery after this Feast, they would be harassed by goblins. Happier news for us in Orleans on that day is that the sun will set at 4:56 pm -- Epiphany season "light for revelation" to borrow Simeon's words as he and Anna recognize and pay homage to this child as messiah.
Simeon's words from Luke actually form the Nunc Dimitis -- a canticle sung by Christians in several forms of evening worship (compline, vespers, evensong) around the world every day of the year. It's a moving witness: the joyful words of an aged person at the end of his days expressing hope for the world which will survive him, even as he acknowledges the sorrow and pain that will mark Jesus' ministry.
Here at The Church of the Holy Spirit, we will mark The Feast of the Presentation at dusk on Sunday, February 4 at 4:30 pm, with a 30-minute service of evensong with hymns and homily. Further details follow below. We hope you can join us for worship and fellowship immediately following.
Faithfully,

Your Vestry met on Thursday, January 18, in a hybrid (Zoom and in-person) meeting.
A pre-meeting social hour was held to honor Brenda Ridgeway and Chris Crighton as they step away from Vestry this month. For our meditation, Brenda shared a poem by Malcolm Guite, an English poet and Anglican priest, entitled "Prayer/Walk".
Chris Crighton, our Treasurer, presented the budget, which has undergone the usual tweaks and adjustments over the course of the past month. It was approved by the Vestry and will be presented to the Parish at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 28.
We urge you all to read the Annual Report if you haven't already done so and come to the Annual Meeting with your questions.
The MLK Breakfast sponsored by Nauset Interfaith returned to our Parish Hall this year. The dynamic speakers gave a great presentation to an appreciative crowd. A very successful event!
In Food 4 Kids news, Anne Koehler and Brenda Ridgeway have been interviewing prospective Program Managers to assume leadership of the summer food program. They hope to have an announcement to the church very soon. The statewide Summer Food Service Kick-off will be held on February 12 at Holy Cross College in Worcester. We hope to bring a small group of employees and volunteers to the event this year.
In his Rector's Report, Patrick discussed the excitement building around his Faith Fundamentals classes. Over thirty parishioners have signed up for the seven classes which will focus on the fundamentals of our faith and church history. Participants will read two books, Faith and the Future and Birth and Rebirth. Bishop Gates will visit
The Church of the Holy Spirit on April 13 to celebrate confirmation and/or reception for applicants from all the Cape & Islands Deanery parishes, from Plymouth to Nantucket to Provincetown. There will surely be some graduates of Patrick's class among those being confirmed or received.
Finally, Sung Evensong has been scheduled for 4:30 pm February 4. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow. We hope to see many of you there.
Thank you for your support and prayers.
Brenda and Celia

EVENSONG
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4 at 4:30
| |
After a prolonged hiatus due to Covid and our interim period, we will finally return to the celebration of Evensong on Sunday, February 4, at 4:30pm.
One of the jewels of the Anglican liturgy, Evensong is Evening Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer set to music. It can range from a simple meditative service to a grand and glorious celebration.
February’s offering will be more towards the meditative end with a variety of hymns and prayers focusing on Christ as the light of the world. We will be celebrating the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (transferred from February 2) including the prayer by the temple priest Simeon which is always included in Evensong, the Nunc Dimittis.
Come to participate and enjoy this special worship opportunity, followed by a wine and cheese reception in the parish hall.
Joan Kirchner, Music Director

Thank you to Sharyn Laughton, Wayne Currey, and members of the Altar Flower guild
who decorated the church for Christmas services.

TWELTH NIGHT PAGEANT and
POTLUCK SUPPER
| |
On Friday, January 5, many folks joined us celebrating the end of Christmastide beginning in church with the annual carol singing and pageant of the Magi's visit. We then went into a festive potluck supper in the Parish Hall!
Your generous donations have been shared with Nauset High School students through the school nursing program: new socks and underwear, gloves, deodorant, leggings and water bottles.
Some of the Christmas poinsettias were moved from the altar to make space for the Trope to the Parish Hall. They were illuminated with small sparkle lights and created a festive and warm atmosphere for all who joined in the potluck supper afterwards.
Enjoy these photos by Kate Paradise and Dianne Fromm.

A beautiful and fun family celebration. Thank you to all who made the night so special.
|
Since the December 21 newsletter.......
We had a small but enthusiastic group for The Christmas Eve Pageant ! We had some seasoned professionals taking recurring roles as sheep and shepherds and some welcomed new faces!
The Epiphany Troupe was small but lovely with current students, alumni, and parents helping out!
In January, the Older Youth gathered to work on our large peace sign (inspired by Donna Tavano’s mosaic work). There was much laughter and creation! This work has been in progress for two years, and we hope to complete it this year!
On February 13, we will be Participating in the Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper at the church. Details to follow… It is a fun event with games, humor and laughter! Don’t forget to sign up!!
In late February and March, classes will be held for those wishing to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church by Bishop Gates. If you have any questions, please call or text Jamie Thompson, Hanna Schneider or Patrick.
In April and May, classes will be held for those wishing to complete their first Holy Communion. If you have any questions, please contact Ruth Campbell.
That’s all for now!! Peace- The Church School and Youth Group

Happy New Year from Buildings & Grounds - Dave Blanchet, Ike Cole, Rich Gregory, Jay Haun, Susan Hitchcock, Steve Koehler, Dan Lowery, Ann Pike-Paris, Brian Ridgeway, and Wayne Currey (Property Supervisor).
We are looking forward to an exciting year as we continue our journey repairing, restoring, renewing, and beautifying our CHS home.
First, we recognize that nature has put to bed our 4-acre campus grounds, allowing our terraces to build up reserves of water to use later in the growing season. Our garden parties are on hiatus until late spring. Thank you to the many volunteers who weeded, trimmed, and mulched our gardens with love and care. Our grounds have never looked better.
The Jensens of Terra Firma Ecosystems, have volunteer to weed and maintain our environmental sensitive terrace solar field landscape this coming year at no charge to CHS. THANK YOU!!! They will be planting ground cover in the spring when weather permits, as well as sowing/planting appropriate pollinating plants salvaged from their sources behind the rectory and other appropriate locations.
We are excited to announce we will be replacing most of the Parish Hall HVAC elements as they are well past their life and are showing signs of failure. The work should not interrupt any ongoing activity in the parish hall and is targeted for an April timeframe.
Another project will be the repair and repaving of our parking lot. This is scheduled for the spring weather-permitting and will impact access. More details to come!
We are continuing our robust repairs on all door and windows as we age gracefully.
Respectfully Submitted
Ann Pike-Paris B&G, Co-Chair
Brian Ridgeway B&G Chair

CO-SPONSORED HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
HOUSE IN BREWSTER UPDATE

The Habitat build sponsored by our parish continues to move forward.
Walls are up, roof is covered and shingled, windows and doors are installed, and interior walls are framed. Sometime in March, there will be an opportunity for CHS folks to participate in a Team Build Day by helping with the shingle siding.
Details will be coming next month. In the meantime, several CHS members are offering devotions each Tuesday and Saturday, a longtime tradition of Habitat. CHS quilters are quilting gifts for the families.
Any questions, please contact Tom Dewing or Doug Fromm, CHS Habitat coordinators.

NAUSET INTERFAITH ASSOCIATION
The January 15, 2024 annual MLK Breakfast event took place in person at the Church of the Holy Spirit . The sold out event featured keynote speaker, The Reverend June R. Cooper of Boston, who spoke about “Strength to Love: Bridging Our Differences”. The event included live pan music (steel drums) with singing.
The event ended with the awarding of the first MLK Action Team Racial Justice Award to local justice activist, Rev. Pancheta Peterson, a Wellfleet resident and lifelong educator and activist.
A few thoughts about the event from Rev. Ken Campbell, past president of NIA:
At the MLK breakfast the “audience” and the speaker resonated with each other.
It reminded me a bit of the black church where the congregation is always saying "amen!" and speaking out words of support to the preacher. You could also see this in the animated conversations at the tables speaking about the challenges and calling from the Lord for us to be active in the struggle for justice for all God’s children as a continuation of the witness of Dr. King. Also our Rector, Patrick,
gave a stirring brief talk about his own commitment to the struggle for justice.
Below are photos of the event taken by Karen Boujoukos, the MLK Breakfast organizer.

FRESH HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to everyone who so generously supported our Holiday Arrangements sale by donating freshly cut greens, making arrangements, swags and mantel pieces, and helping to advertise this event.
In terms of our ability to extend financial aid to organizations in need on Cape Cod, the sale was a great success. Our net profit was $1,000 more than the previous year.
If you bought an arrangement and no longer want the container and/or its decorative items, we would love to re-use them for another creative arrangement at our next event. Please place these items in the drop-off box provided in the Parish hallway near the Fireplace Room.

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand.
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
