A MESSAGE FROM PATRICK

RENEWAL

This past Sunday, parishioner Suzy Gray identified and photographed seven monarch butterfly caterpillars munching on some of the milkweed we have planted around our church campus in recent years. One of her beautiful images is above. Apparently, a monarch caterpillar can consume such a leaf in about five minutes. The beauty of the post-chrysalis butterfly is famous, of course. And famous too are the speed and height and range of its migratory flight. What Suzy's images have helped me appreciate is something I'd never stopped to consider: the striped glory of the worm itself.

Most people know that the monarch population has declined catastrophically -- by about 80% over two decades according to Biological Diversity (August 26, 2014). This is largely due to human building and development decimating the milkweed upon which monarchs survive. Thanks to parish visionaries such as Ann Pike-Paris and the late Gilbert Merritt, The Church of the Holy Spirit has committed itself to reversing that trend and renewing a habitat for monarchs and other species. As far as we know, we are the only church between Sandwich and Provincetown that's a registered stop on the Cape Cod Pollinator Pathway (read more HERE) a regional initiative to increase habitats and food sources for all sorts of pollinating insects and wildlife. I'm not sure that Henry, our newly resident fox (see Wayne Currey's photo below) is a pollinator, but he has found welcome on campus as well.

What the collective efforts of Suzy and Ann and Gilbert and Wayne and the members of our Building & Grounds Team (headed by Brian Ridgeway) amount to is active ministry. Care for God's creation. Care for people and creatures who will come after us. Care for you and me. Care for any number of chance visitors who find rest and refreshment simply by spending a few moments in peace by the koi pond so faithfully tended by Ike Cole.

If you'd like to explore a possible role for yourself in this ministry, you might consider joining our "B&G" team. Or simply spending a few hours with us on any or all of the upcoming mornings when Ann and other "garden partiers" will be working together to tend and renew what God and our forebears in the faith have given us: July 13, August 17, September 7, October 19 and November 16. Send a note to office@chsorleans.org and we'll respond promptly.

Faithfully.

WARDENS' REPORT

The Vestry has been busy in the last couple of weeks! We met early this month, on Thursday June 13th and received an update from Jenn Gale about Food 4 Kids--she and the staff and volunteers are ready to start the summer season on June 24. We also had a report from Earle Bailey on the Outreach Committee’s very positive reaction to the Outreach Fair held on May 18. There were 18 agencies present (more than ever before), and the attendance and interest shown by parishioners was “impressive”. The agencies themselves were impressed with the whole event, and it has drawn us closer to all of them.

The Rummage Sale is still in our minds as Brian Schnetzer held a Debriefing meeting on June 17 for those who were involved in this very successful effort on May 3-4. Lots of ideas and improvements were suggested for next year’s Rummage Sale, so start filling those boxes and bags now!

The Wardens reported that they are working on forming a Nominating Committee for next year's Annual Meeting. Patrick reported on the continuing work on Vision and Mission following the Vestry’s May Retreat. He also talked about plans for a second “Soar and Explore” summer program for children and thoughts on a series of training sessions for children taking “Early Communion” or “First Communion”. Patrick also updated us on plans for Neighborhood Chapels, which he has mentioned in church.

The Orleans Chamber of Commerce held their June Afterhours Get Together on our campus on Thursday, June 20, and some Vestry Members and other parish members assisted as hosts at various campus locations. A great early evening event in glorious sunshine. Refer to article in this edition for more details.

And finally, the Vestry met on Saturday morning, June 22, with Brian Ridgeway and Steve Koehler who both serve on Buildings and Grounds and the Finance Committee. We received a detailed explanation of all the work that has recently been completed on the campus, the work that is anticipated, and the estimated costs thereof. It was enlightening for us all and was followed up with a tour of many of the recesses and closets on the campus. We all now have a much better understanding of our HVAC equipment! An excellent preview to the presentation that Brian gave to the parish on Sunday June 23.

As always, thank you for your prayers and support,

Priscilla Isner and Celia Calhoun - Co-Wardens

CAPE & ISLAND DEANERY NEWS

The Cape & Islands Deanery Assembly met on Thursday, May 30th at St. David’s, South Yarmouth.

Agenda items included the annual Deanery election (among others, Celia Calhoun was unanimously re-elected for an additional 2-year term as Deanery lay co-convener), various reports, distribution of Deanery grants, and a fascinating program given by Kirstin Meyer-Kaiser on the Permaculture Gardens at St. Barnabas in Falmouth.

The next meeting of the Deanery will be hybrid (in-person and Zoom) on Thursday, September 26th, at 6:30 pm, hosted by/here at The Church of the Holy Spirit. So, if you ever wondered what we do, and how the Deanery works, this could be a perfect opportunity to find out!

Meanwhile, if you have any interest in or questions about our Deanery, feel free to reach out to Deanery representatives Cris Harter and Kate Paradise.

SUNDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

The Book Discussion Group is currently reading Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World by Katharine Hayhoe (2022). Your local bookstore may have this book because other book groups on the Cape have already read it. It can also be ordered through them or ordered online for $18.95 and is available on Kindle. Some comments on the book:

“An optimistic view on why collective action is still possible—and how it can be realized.” —The New York Times

“As far as heroic characters go, I’m not sure you could do better than Katharine Hayhoe.” —Scientific American

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Saving Us is one of the more important books about climate change to have been written.” —The Guardian

Please join us to learn more about a subject that is critically important to our survival.

CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS

PENTECOST LESSON

The above painting was done by Wesley Gale on Pentecost Sunday! It is an illustration of "work time" in the Godly Play program for 5-10 year olds. It is on display in the Parish Hall of the Church School and Youth bulletin Board.

After hearing a story with wooden visuals on a felt circle surrounded by the children, they move to respond to the story.

Wesley's response was painting above of the disciples when the wind and the Holy Spirit descended upon them .

He requested gray paint for the wind... so we mixed it for him !! The disciple John was his favorite because Wesley's real first name is John .

I wish every child could be part of this special curriculum by Jerome Berryman.

HOLIDAY BAZAAR

It's true! Even though Summer just started, it's time to start planning for our annual Holiday Bazaar on November 2, 2024

Like the successful Rummage Sale last month, the annual Holiday Bazaar is another amazing community event at The Church of the Holy Spirit and a fun way for everyone in the parish to participate.

We will need volunteers to help plan and set up, volunteer on the day of the event, make cookies, breads, pies, jellies, jams, pickles, soups...anything you make to eat is perfect for our VERY popular food table....Photo above is of boxes of over 2,400 donated cookies for the 2023 event.... and not a crumb was left!

START PLANNING & COOKING your food table donations. As you begin to convert your summer harvests into delicious food items to can or freeze... set aside some for this event. We will have space at the church to safely store your donations in feezers or refrigerators in advance of the event

We are also doing the themed basket raffles again. More on that to come, but start thinking about items you can donate that can be packaged together for a basket.

Stay tuned for further details about all aspects of the bazaar.... Put November 2, 2024 CHS Bazaar on your calendar now.

MONDAY NIGHT BOOK CLUB

A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR FELLOWSHIP & DISCUSSION

"A Surgeon in the Village”
An American Doctor Teaches Brain Surgery in Africa by Tony Bartelme
Book Club Hosted by Cheryl Kyle at her home in Brewster - limited to 10 parishioners.
If interested, please contact Cheryl at cherylkyle7@gmail.com
Our first meeting will be MONDAY, JULY 22nd from 5-7pm with a light meal and discussion of the book.
Reviews on Amazon:
-A wonderful true experience of finding one's ultimate purpose in life. Teaching and expanding the good which can be done when recognizing both the talents and limitations of environment and locale. Well researched and beautifully written with the passion of the writer.
-I knew I had to read this book when my reluctant reader husband could not put the book down. Bartelme spent four years observing before writing this book. It is such a happy, inspirational story about a doctor who efficiently brings effective medical care to a community. And why? Just because it makes sense and it is the right thing to do. In doing so, Ellagala finds a charming and intelligent wife and a life worth living.

ORLEANS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

OPEN HOUSE AT CHS

JUNE 20

The Church of the Holy Spirit and Galley West Art Gallery are both members of the Orleans Chamber of Commerce. Each month different chamber members host an afterhours reception to welcome fellow chamber members who may be too busy during the day to drop in to the other chamber businesses.

It was a glorious Summer Equinox evening. Some CHS members created a wonderful reception of finger foods, wine, and beverages under the tent set up in the courtyard, and others were "docents" in the various campus locations.

As people gathered in the courtyard, Patrick had the opportunity to welcome our visitors and explain all the beautiful features of our campus and parish life that go on "behind the doors" of the courtyard........

Thank you to everyone who helped with this event....... you made it special!

  • Hospitality Reception - Ruth Campbell, Cynthia Murray, Gail Binney Sterne, Andi Stubbendick, Ragnhild Bjerke, Jamie Thompson, Celia Calhoun, Jean Gatzkiewcz, Page McMahan, Georgia Schneider, Nikki Carter

  • Galley West was able to preview their Summer Show opening on June 26 witih Debbie Winnick, a Gallery Artist, on duty.
  • Peter Jensen of Terra Firma talked about his work at our entrance
  • Parking Attendants - Doug Fromm & John Harter

In his thank you note, Patrick captured the essence of the evening and the comraderie of those who helped host the event. ....

Dear friends,

If I were an Orleans Chamber of Commerce member, I would only want my Church home to be wherever all of *you* happen to be! What a thoroughly lovely event you created and supported last night! From the moment folks drove onto the lot they were cared for, fed, and engaged in the most hospitable way possible. We have so much to share and each of you do this with so much love and regard. I think we will see a number of these folks again soon.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Enjoy these photos taken by Cynthia Murray. Apologies to those who participated but did not get a photo taken... will do better next time!
