A Message from Patrick

In & Out

I wish I had a time-lapse video of our parish hall from last Wednesday through this Monday morning.

It would show in succession our Free Shop in full operation (Wednesday), a funeral reception (Maggie Bartlett's on Thursday), a Red Cross Blood Drive (Friday), a second funeral reception (Joan Payne's on Saturday), our Soar & Explore summer church school (Sunday morning), Rev. Edwin Johnson's coffee hour talk about Episcopal City Mission (Sunday morning), an at-capacity chamber music concert (Sunday evening -- the last glorious offering of the season by Don Enos and Meeting House Chamber Music) followed by Free Shop set-up and opening (Monday).

Moving in and out of the frame along with many of us would be Wayne and Matthew with push brooms and mops, moving hundreds of chairs and many tables into various configurations; Food 4 Kids kitchen volunteers coming in and out of the kitchen and transporting hundreds of sandwiches and packets of cut vegetable downstairs for downstairs packing (841 kids served last Wednesday was a high mark and likely our current limit); parishioners with tins of cookies and platters of deviled eggs to feed our guests.

Thank heavens not every week approaches this volume of activity. And thank heavens many weeks do: "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me..." (Mt. 25:35-36).

I am mindful each day that none of this happens without you: your presence and/or your prayers and/or your pledge. Perhaps you are not aware of the degree to which these keep me and everyone else in our community going and charged up with energy and hope! Food, drink, shelter, clothing and welcome are "essentials" of course -- and at the same time they point us in a sacramental way into something more deeply essential: an abiding love at the heart of the universe. A deviled egg, as a church volunteer once reminded me, can preach God's glory.

My most important word to you today is thank you. May God "preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." (Ps 121:8).

Holy Eucharist and Prayers for Healing

Thursdays at 11:00 am in the Church

Join us for a simple service of weekday Holy Eucharist

with a short meditation.

Private prayers for healing available after the service concludes.

Glimpse of the Gospel

‘Glimpse’ meets in the Fireplace Room on Sunday mornings at 8:45. Participants are sent a copy of the readings from scripture for the Sunday service earlier in the week to give opportunity for reading, reflecting, and inwardly digesting beforehand.

Wardens' Report

Your Wardens have been working so hard that we completely forgot the deadline for Together! So briefly, we had a wonderful visit with Bishop Julia, who wrote a glowing report of us in her blog; AND she appeared at the Evensong that the choir sang at St. Andrew’s Chapel in Hyannisport. Thank you to everyone for being there and helping to make that day so memorable.

Looking around at our community and our activities, we are in a good place! We personally find joy in coming to the campus and tackling the problems, such as they are: the financial challenges and the need for an assisting priest being the primary areas of focus at present. We are working hard on them, and making progress. You will be hearing more from Patrick about the CHS Fund for the Future very shortly, and we hope you will support that program and come to one of the group sessions.

Thank you for all that you do for this parish and for our community life together. Each gift of time and/or talent makes a huge difference, and creates a program such as Food 4 Kids. How could we churn out 800 meals every day? That’s an impossible task, but it is happening every weekday at the moment.

Please let us know if you have concerns about anything – we want to hear from you. We don’t hear many grumbles or suggestions, but our virtual doors are always open. If there is something on your mind, please let us know.

Food 4 Kids

Food 4 Kids is in full gear!

Over 800 meals are being prepped, packed, delivered and served each day. That is more than 100 compared to our biggest day last year, and it is more consistent. Why? More families are coming to our meal sites from the community, more kids at the programs we serve want our meals, and we added five new meal sites.

Our kitchen staff and all our volunteers are doing amazing work ... and we need your help. There are 2 shifts: 7:30-9:30/10 am, and 10:30-12:30. More hands make less work! Consider coming to help out, click here - Prep meals SignUP Genius link.

Families at two new POAH (Preservation of Affordable Housing) meal sites in Brewster are deeply appreciative and kids are loving the food! POAH revitalizes at-risk affordable housing communities as vibrant, healthy homes for low-and-moderate-income residents. This means we

are serving families who really need our support.

As always, kids love the free books!

Soar & Explore

Children’s (ages 4 and up!) summer art-inspired time together in the Parish Hall.

July 6-August 31 9:45 am -

10:45 am 

Children will enter church at 10:45 am to join their families . The creative work is based on a short passage from the Sunday readings that families are listening to in church. They then hear a children’s story or poems which illustrate, in children’s terms, an interpretation of the reading. This is followed by an “in house” Holy Spirit artist who will creatively respond to the story in an art form.

Children’s authors and poets will include: Chasten Buttigieg, Caroline Kennedy, Senator Raphael Warnock, and Marion Wright Edelman .

Our Holy Spirit artists are: Joanie Barnes, Donna Bailey, Brooke Eaton Skea, Cris Harter, Dianne Fromm, Pia MacKenzie, Donna Tavano, Peter Jensen, Joe and Sam Simons, and Raven Thompson! 

Evening Book Gathering

Our next gathering will be held on Monday, August 18 at 5:30 at the home of Brenda and Brian Ridgeway in Eastham. New members are always welcome.

This month we are reading Catcher in the Rye, a classic coming of age story by J.D. Salinger.  The story follows the life of Holden Caulfield, a sixteen-year-old boy who is struggling to find his place in the world. The novel explores themes of identity, alienation, and the loss of innocence as Holden navigates through various encounters and situations.

Artist of the Month for August will be Simon Montoya. Simon lives in Eastham and is 11 years old.

"My art is about a video game I play called 'Forsaken'. I drew a bunch of pieces. Some were specific to one character, and some were related to all the characters. Some were drawn the way they were created (via an app called Roblox Studio), and some were drawn realistically."
