All of It
The moment the palms arrive, Lent begins to shift into Holy Week for me. They showed up this week, to my relief, in their unmistakable narrow box. Any church professional knows the receiving protocol. Open the box. Do not open the inner plastic bag. Store in a cool place, optimally refrigerated.
"Palms," the head of an altar guild once warned me ominously, "can go from supple to spiky overnight if left out. Scratch someone's retina, waving those things around in church if we're not careful!"
"Supple to spiky" is not bad shorthand for a good deal of the liturgical energy in Holy Week. On Palm Sunday itself, the exhilaration of the opening liturgy yields to an animus and a concluding grief that is jagged and unresolved. The Maundy Thursday liturgy arcs from the tender act of washing other's feet to Holy Eucharist -- and then gets stripped bare and collapses, bereft, into darkness.
Like Holy Week and Easter, Christmastide also holds within it a stupefying variety of energies and narratives. Boxing Day is on the Feast of Stephen, the church's first martyr. December 29 invites us to recall the state-sponsored murders of the Holy Innocents. Our church's two greatest festival seasons are complicated, it seems, for a simple reason: Jesus assumed our flesh to share in all of it. The supple and the spiky. The bright and the dark. The joyful and the bereft. "Good Friday" is "good" because on this day, our own failings and a responding divine love are made known to us in the starkest terms imaginable.
The meaning of Easter, the bright blinding power of the proclamation, is somehow less if you haven't sufficiently marinated in the abject darkness and dislocation of the days preceding. My hope today is that you can be with us for as much of Holy Week as possible -- because He came to share all of it.
Faithfully,

We would love to have you join us on our Walk. Each step that we take will be echoing the love of Jesus and what he has done for us in his sacrifice on the cross.

This issue of Together is coming to you prior to the March Vestry meeting, so no news on that topic.
Patrick’s classes on Faith Fundamentals have been a great learning experience for all of us – but sadly, they have come to an end. He has sent us an email gift of all the colorful slides he used to illustrate his talks -- a big thank you to Patrick for all the knowledge he shared with us, as well as the opportunity for gathering together.
What we (some of us) are lacking, are the recipes for all the delicious soups we received as gifts throughout the course. If any of you chefs wish to share your soup recipes, we can collate them and share them with interested members.
Last week we had an interesting discussion with two members, John Lemly and Mary Sherman, from the Creation Care Justice Network in the Diocese. Patrick has registered us as participants in the pilot program they are running as part of the Episcopal Path to Creation Justice. As a kick-off even, some interested parishioners are car-pooling to an Earth Day Celebration on April 20, at St. Mark’s Church in Southborough, with speakers Robin Wall Kimmerer (author of Braiding Sweetgrass), Mary Evelyn Tucker and Bill McKibben. If you are interested in joining us please let us know, and get registered here: https://www.diomass.org/event/earth-day-2024.
The Rev. Donna Foughty (Rector at Christ Church, Harwich) and The Rev. Anne Koehler led us in a Labyrinth walk on Saturday, March 16, which was well-attended by both parishes. It was wonderful to see the Labyrinth full of motion, weaving together like a murmuration of starlings! Photos from the presentation are below.
We are about to enter Holy Week, and we hope to see many of you at all the very meaningful services, listed elsewhere in Together.
We have updated the Vestry photo board, with some new photographs and changes to the assignments for Affinity Group Liaisons. Please get to know your Vestry members!
And remember that Easter is quickly followed by the Deanery Confirmation Service and Reception on April 13 at 10:30 a.m. here, at CHS, with Bishop Alan Gates presiding. We have quite a number of parish members being confirmed or received. So, please come and support them.
Thank you for your support and prayers.

Come join us on April 4, the first Thursday of the month, when we will meet again.

We had a busy Februray and March and confirmation classes well underway. Confirmati
on will be held at Holy Sprit on Saturday, April 13 at 10:30 with Bishop Gate officiating.
We have been blessed to reconnect with students we hav not seen in a while
First Holy Communion classes are planned and wil begin in mid-April.
The youth have been participating in the services every 4th Sunday of the month and taking their roles with pleasure!
We had a chance to walk the small Labyrinth. It was created by a few of the parishioners here ad is a smaller model of the large one that will be avialble in the Parish Hall during Holy Week. Brook Skea led us in the endeavor and shared a bit about the history of the Labyrinths. We will be looking for spirals everywhere now!
Holy Week and Easter are fast approaching. We will be participating in church on both Palm Sunday and Easter. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt following Sunday Easter Service. All are wlecom to participate and contribute. (There is a basket iin the entry room of the chruch with plastic eggs to fill... no peanut items please!)
Also after the Easter Service, the Thompson family and a few loyal helpers will be creating a delicious fare of Eggs Benedict for those wishing to join us in the Parish Hall.
A glimpse into the future delights us with a visit again in May to the Barbara Harris Camp (Details below) and then on to the Summer with Soar and Explore led again by Ruth Campbell and Parishioners who are willing to share their talents with the youth on those Sundayas. More to come ... stay tuend.

A sensitive plant in
a garden grew,
And the young winds
fed it with silver dew,
And it opened its fan-like leaves to the light.
And closed them beneath
the kisses of Night.
And the Spring arose
on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love
felt everywhere.
And each flower and herb
on Earth’s dark breast
Rose from the dreams
of its wintry rest.

Saturday, March 9, was a Team Work Day for CHS volunteers.
Beginning at 7:45 a.m., the twelve-member team gathered at the work site in Brewster. Greeted and registered by Habitat Registrar, Jen Marlin, the team gathered work gear and waited for assignments.
Shingles signed by CHS folks were on-site and ready for exterior walls, wrapping the house in prayers and good wishes. At 10 a.m. Patrick led devotions, part of the Habitat workday.
Meg Nemitz delivered snacks, and lunch was served by Habitat. Smiling faces proclaimed a sense of accomplishment.
CHS team folks who worked on March 9 are: Ben Ballard, Dave Blanchet, Chuck Dow, Sarah Gregory, Rich Gregory, Walter Morgan, Brian Schnetzer, Brooke Skea, Brian Skea, Brendan Sweeney, Donna Tavano, and Frank Tavano. The next workday will be sometime this summer.
Meanwhile, Bob Collins is making bookcases for the home. Jean Collins, Fay Cole, Carol Fitzgerald, Jay Haun, Priscilla Isner, Ann Pike-Paris, Brenda Ridgeway, Gail Binney Sterne, Andi Stubbendick, and Donna Tavano are making five quilts for the family members. Margaret Anne Heuss will embroider the quilts with a blessing.

You may have heard that the Center for Disease Control is considering a change to the “5-day isolation” guideline for COVID-19 infection. This potential plan is based on higher population immunity, more tools to combat respiratory viruses, and lower rates of severe illness. We have come a long way over 4 years!
CDC plans to drop five-day covid isolation guidelines - The Washington Post
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2024/02/13/covid-isolation-guidelines-cdc-change/
Please check out the CDC’s current Respiratory Virus FAQs and Prevention Guidance in the links below, to include COVID-19, flu and RSV. And as always, take good of yourselves and each other, particularly those who are at higher risk of severe illness. Stay home and away from others until at least 24 hours after symptoms improve and you are fever free. Then take added precautions for 5 days “such as taking additional steps for cleaner air, hygiene, masks, physical distancing, and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors.”

CHS Gallery Artist for the month of April is
Pia MacKenzie
View, enjoy, purchase Pia’s extraordinary art!
Paintings Past & Present
Taking a break from showing my latest collages, I am sharing some paintings from years past, and a couple of new ones I have been working on this Winter. A few are in Oil on canvas and others in Acrylic on paper.
The Acrylic paintings are mostly from a series I did where I took small black and white photos from the newspaper and imagined the scene in color.
Images in some of the oil paintings are composed from my collages.
My recent inspiration comes from the many objects and family photos I cleared from my mother's house since her passing a year ago (April 11). So, on various levels, the themes of the exhibit are: memory, continuity, creation, and reflection.
I do consider myself primarily a painter who dabbles in collages but it's been a while since I exhibited these works on canvas and paper.

SUNDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP | |
On March 10, we began to discuss a new book entitled The Fractured Kingdom by Jean-Pierre Isbouts (2023) Here's a description:
“Brilliantly tracing Jesus’s vision for the 'Kingdom of God' from its origin up through modern times, Dr. Isbouts leads us to a possible antidote for the fiercely partisan moment in which we find ourselves: the Our Father. Then taking readers on a historically exhilarating tour of the Lord’s Prayer, The Fractured Kingdom shows us why the only doctrine Christians agree on might be our last hope for forging a more equal, compassionate, and loving society. What results is an eminently readable and undeniably essential work that addresses some of the most pressing issues now confronting communities of faith around the world.”
This book has also been recommended by Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry.
Please join our discussion on Sundays after the service, or after the program following the service. We meet in the Fireplace Room. If you would prefer to join us on Zoom, please contact Brooke Eaton-Skea. Thank you!

Many of you have shared how much you enjoy the photos in each Together edition that highlight events at the parish. Many are taken by our parish photographer, Kate Paradise, while others come from many of you.
If you have some photos of events you attended, or just took a photo of something special you saw while at church that could be shared with others, send those to Sue Sasso. They need to be sent as jpg/j[peg format and the largest "size" your device will support.
If the photos include people, please make sure you get their permission to be included in our newsletter and provide their names. Sue Sasso

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand.
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
