Approaching Holy Week
Muffin and Judy, friends since boarding school, were about ninety years old when I met them in 2009 at my first parish after ordination. Each widowed, they were an inseparable pair, mordantly funny, and pillars of the altar guild. I have a hard time remembering sometimes now which of them said what but they were standing shoulder to shoulder in the sacristy one Sunday morning when I was informed that they would be observing Lent and Holy Week with "clean foreheads and dirty feet."
Few worshipped more faithfully than this pair -- every Sunday, last pew on the right. Their point was that they would not come forward on either Ash Wednesday or Maundy Thursday for the once-a-year liturgical action: imposition of ashes, washing of feet. "How did someone put it the other day?" asked Judy, tracing with one index finger a circle in the air. "Some things are just outside of our comfort zones."
"Warm water on my feet and someone blotting them with a fluffy towel is completely comfortable," I countered, but they didn't take the bait. Weeks later, as I was inviting the faithful to come forward for foot washing, their parallel grins were visible from their customary back row seats. They remained in place.
"Church as comfort zone" is an interesting proposition. Much about church is profoundly comforting to me: the goodness and generosity of so many people doing something other-focused that the culture no longer compels or rewards; certain scriptural passages and hymns brimming with the hope of a loving Kingdom that will not be defeated; that moment just before the Sanctus each week when we are reminded that we are knit together forever with all the living and all the dead.
Lent and particularly Holy Week, however, haul us beyond comfort to a series of uneasy acknowledgements: unavoidable complicity in systems of destruction; hardwired tendencies to acquire, defeat and dis-engage; lack of faith that stunts possible growth into the more generous, loving and risk-taking people we might be. The Apostle Peter, you may remember, will acknowledge each of the above after he hears the cock crow. He also didn't want Jesus to wash his feet. While one can't root each of his Friday sins in a simple night-before reticence to submit his bare foot to his kneeling teacher, they seem connected to me. There's a cost to staying in one's comfort zone, I think. The hard texts and strange, discomfiting actions of Lent and Holy Week remind us that God's never finished with our growth. And Muffin and Judy live forever in God's light and love.
See you in church --

The Vestry held a retreat last weekend, beginning with dinner on Friday evening. Lively conversation arose in response to the questions in the paragraph below extracted from an article in Episcopal Church Foundation’s Ministry Tip of the Week:
“Take a look at our little church. We’re not perfect—far from it—but following Jesus is changing our lives. Do you think other people see that in us?" Do we notice our own lives changing? Following the discussion, we ended the evening with Compline.
On Saturday we began with the Liturgy of the Word part of the Eucharist service. We were then were led to examine our Mutual Ministry Review with Helen Netos, an experienced facilitator, who has worked in our Diocese. We reviewed the goals and evaluations for various areas of our ministries that we had submitted before the meeting, focusing on those that we felt were most important and urgent. We look forward to sharing the results of our conversations with the parish at Sunday coffee hour very soon.

It was a very fruitful time together, and we ended our day with the Liturgy of the Table part of the Eucharist Service.
Our next Vestry Meeting has been brought forward to Thursday, April 10, since we did not have a meeting in March, and April 17, our regularly scheduled date, is Maundy Thursday.
Finally, Holy Week and Easter will have come and gone by the time of the next issue of Together. The Vigil on Saturday is my (Celia’s) favorite service of the year. There is a lot to learn and experience in attending the three services on Thursday, Friday and Saturday during Holy Week. Please plan to come to them all if you can, and of course Easter Sunday, too!
Thank you for your support and prayers,
Celia Calhoun & Priscilla Isner,
Wardens

CHS Planning Study Focus Groups
| | |
Focus Groups are being held this week!
As mentioned at our Annual Meeting and at church, our Vestry is committed to expanding our mission and ministry. One key step in achieving this goal is the addition of another priest to our parish. This expansion will allow us to enhance pastoral care, broaden our welcome to newcomers, and strengthen parish programming—benefiting both our congregation and the wider community in Orleans and surrounding towns.
You are invited to participate in one of these Focus Groups. Your feedback will help shape a final plan that aligns with both our parish’s vision and financial capacity. These hour-long meetings will take place at church as follows:
Focus Groups
- Monday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.
- Thursday, April 3, at 4:00 p.m.
- Thursday April 3, at 7:00 p.m. via ZOOM
Click on the following link to RSVP:
In Person Focus Groups (March 31 or April 1): Click HERE
Zoom Focus Group April 3: Click HERE
Your advice, counsel, and willingness to participate in this process are essential so that we may perform this study with your open and honest input. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Nearly 80 parishioners have been part of the inaugural Neighborhood Tables season over the past six months. While overall it has been a great success, we have learned a lot and hope to make it even better. We are grateful to those who replied to our request for feedback.
Quite a few of us are “seasonal” residents which made it difficult for regular participation over the winter. To address this issue, we will have two sessions of Neighborhood Tables: May - September and October - April.
We ask all interested parishioners to SIGN UP for May - September tables NOW! This is an especially good opportunity for new members to get know more people. Call Debbi Manning (508) 255-0433 or sign up on the clipboard at coffee hour.
Please sign up by May 15. We will create new groups and the fun can continue!
Thanks, Celia, Cynthia and Dianne

On April 27, the Book Discussion Group will begin to discuss Patriot, the autobiography of Alexei Navalny.
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come.
“This book is a testament not only to Alexei’s life, but to his unwavering commitment to the fight against dictatorship—a fight he gave everything for, including his life. Through its pages, readers will come to know the man I loved deeply—a man of profound integrity and unyielding courage. Sharing his story will not only honor his memory but also inspire others to stand up for what is right and to never lose sight of the values that truly matter.” —Yulia Navalnaya
Patriot is currently available at local bookstores.
We meet on Sundays in the Fireplace room after the service. Please join us!

As weather has allowed, B&G has had Global Gutter clean and install a leaf filter system over the main church and admin buildings, as well as the entire parish hall building. This will reduce the risk of injury to our staff in cleaning our gutters and safely direct rainfall away from our aging foundations.
Various trim, facia, and eaves on the church, admin and parish hall have been repaired from rot with Azek material for extended function. The admin entrance door and reception room exterior doors have had new hardware installed for increased security and correcting major heat loss.
Our HVAC guru has been working to resolve a major heat imbalance in the admin building in the rector's office and main work area. Our new Ecobee thermostats are delivering appropriate heat/AC delivery and indicating problem areas to work on. Over in the Parish hall, our new boiler #2 is finally functioning as designed, delivering heat and hot water to the hall and to GWAG.
Our new kitchen appliances have arrived and been installed. These digital self-contained units are quieter, more energy efficient, and easier to clean. Thank you to Wayne and Russell Karber for an efficient installation. The old repaired refrigerator is downstairs in use by Food 4 Kids as their fresh produce needs increase.

We’re Back!!! April 5, 2025!! First Garden Party!!
If you’ve never shared these few hours with us, why not give it a try? We have a lovely surprise for everyone, even if you want to stop by just for this: Our own Peter Jensen will be showing us how to create an area for our garden waste…Yes, we have that! In buckets! Why not learn about it for your own yards?
Peter will also be looking for a few volunteers to learn how to plant and maintain a few of his installations. This would be something to do on your own time, not necessarily on our Saturday Garden Parties.
Come and share some time, fellowship and sharpen your knowledge about preservation of this most special space we share. NO prior experience needed! We’ll share our knowledge and skills and help you on your journey to gardening and preservation!
Thanks for your support!

2025 TANZANIA JOURNAL
Dear Friends:
The bright yellow school, Endupoto Primary School, also known as “the miracle in the bush”, located in a remote corner of the Maasai Steppe in Tanzania is thriving and so are the other three schools we are contributing to.
During our trip to Tanzania in January/February 2025 the To Do list was extensive.
- Purchasing the essentials for 28 super smart graduates who passed the National Exam in their final year at Endupoto and delivering them as boarders to Oljoro Secondary School;
- Completing annual maintenance for Endupoto facilities used by 850 Maasai girls and boys and 15 teachers;
- Building a new three hole girls’ latrine at Endupoto after an intense windstorm destroyed the original one;
-
Delivering trees to the four schools we contribute to on a yearly basis;
- Supporting Tolito’s four boys and one niece with their education at Arusha district schools;
- Meeting and working with St. Jude to support and encourage Kimbay Kisusu in Medical School;
- Ordering 60 new metal desks and chairs for Oljoro;
- Having a tooth fairy, aka Dr. Annie from Colorado, do dental checks for all the Endupoto students.
And last but not least visiting our favorite Tarangire National Park for a weekend of rest. For those of you who have been on our safaris, you will remember the elephants.
If you have ever considered a safari to Tanzania or would like to return for a Safari of a Lifetime with us, please email kfroyce@gmail.com or cherylkyle@aol.com for the proposed itinerary for the January 2026 trip.
Thank you for your interest and support. You help make this all possible.

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase..
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand.
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.,
