Fear Itself
As we arc through these three springtime Sundays – Ascension, Pentecost and Trinity – the Jesus of Holy Week and Easter widens to something broader and more abstract: the power of the Holy Spirit and a "triune" God transcending human understanding.
Although we depict the Holy Spirit as dove or descending flame, medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas wrote that most of us come to know the presence of the Spirit best by her effects or "gifts" in our lives. Aquinas read Isaiah 11:1-3 as a roster of these seven gifts:
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
Wisdom. Understanding. Judgment. Strength. Knowledge. These five are clear enough to us in Isaiah. Aquinas assigned a distinct definition to each the two instances of "fear of the Lord" concluding this passage from the prophet.
The first translation of "fear of the Lord – Gift 6 – is "piety." That's a word we often understand as offensively showy sanctimony. Aquinas used "pietas" instead as the understanding that we are completely dependent on a loving God beyond our control or rational understanding. "Pietas" carries dimensions of humility and reverence.
The final "fear of the Lord" ("Timor Domini"), Gift 7, is perhaps the gift least understood in our own time. Aquinas uses "Timor Domini" simply to mean "awe." This has little to do with fear of punishment. Isiah in fact couples this fear with "delight." At a general audience about ten years ago, Pope Francis offered a definition of "fear of the Lord" that's a gift to all people of faith. “This is no servile fear," he offered, "but rather a joyful awareness of God’s grandeur and a grateful realization that only in God do our hearts find true peace."
As time passes, my appreciation for these teachings on "the fear of the Lord" has only grown. On my worst days I can quickly build a list of all that worries me – fears about health, ageing, the environment, politics, poverty, racism, guns, the welfare and prospects of those whose lives I share. "Timor Domini" is that gift of the Spirit that helps us hope beyond all of the above that God's dream for each of us and for the world is larger, safer, brighter and kinder.
May God's Spirit guide you into wisdom, understanding, sound judgment, strength, insight, reverence and awe!
In faith and fear,

The vestry has been busy this month with retreat on May 10th and 11th. We began the weekend with a potluck dinner Friday night at the home of Betty and Phil Suraci.
When Patrick arrived at The Church of the Holy Spirit eighteen months ago, he asked every one of us in the parish to answer five questions so that he might get to know us better. On Friday evening, he asked the vestry to answer the same questions and share their answers. We ended the evening with Compline.
On Saturday we started with Morning Prayer and a guided scripture reflection of Ephesians 2: 1-10. As the day continued, we discussed writing a new mission statement for the church. The vestry will continue working on this project over the next months. We ended the day with Eucharist.
Just a few days later, the vestry met for their regular monthly meeting on May 16th. Ann Pike-Paris led us in a meditation. John Harter, treasurer, updated us on the budget.
Income so far this year has been slightly higher than budgeted due to pledges being paid ahead of schedule. Expenses were also slightly higher due to increased Building and Grounds maintenance. John will present a budget update to the parish on June 9th.
We discussed that our traditional time of the vestry meeting, 7pm-9pm, was not feasible for employed members. The vestry meetings will now begin at 6pm and wrap up around 8pm. It was also decided that committees that need to bring a motion to the vestry should email it to the clerk, Dianne Fromm, the Monday before the meeting.
We had an amazing Rummage Sale this year. Thank you, Brian Schnetzer, for chairing the event. We had an abundance of "stuff" to sell. The gross income was about $13,000, but more important was the fellowship, fun, and sense of community enjoyed by everyone who participated. Meg Nemitz organized over 50 volunteers--both new and old members of the parish. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a success. And, Brian has already committed to chairing this event next year!
The Outreach Fair was held this past Sunday in the Parish Hall. Many of the charitable organizations that we help to support were here to introduce themselves to us and talk about their organizations. We hope you learned more about the many wonderful organizations that church supports!
Thank you for your support and prayers,
Priscilla Isner and Celia Calhoun, Co-Wardens

Pending consent, the bishop-elect’s consecration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 19th at Trinity Church, Boston. We are so grateful for all of your prayers that upheld and sustained us through an emotional, memorable, and spirit-filled day.

Are you looking for a way to enliven your Sunday morning experience at church... A chance to get to know others in the congregation... An opportunity to explore with others questions about your faith?
Then you may want to give the group called Glimpse of the Gospel a try. All are welcome!
'Glimpse’ meets in the Fireplace Room on Sunday mornings at 8:45. Participants receive a copy of the readings from scripture for the service earlier in the week to give opportunity for reading, reflecting and inwardly digesting beforehand. We include a translation of the Gospel passage from Eugene Peterson’s The Message. Its contemporary language often gives useful and lively insight. When we meet, the Gospel is read aloud, and discussion begins.
Here are a few comments from people who are now participating:
“For me, the best part of this practice is gathering together and sharing our individual thoughts, feelings and ideas about what the passages say to us now, and how the original audience may have heard them. This experience
makes it clear that the Spirit is among us, speaking through God's written word
and through each other.”
“I have learned so much over the past few years by participating in the Glimpse. We discuss the context, the authors and their intended messages -
but most importantly, we ask ourselves and each other, what does this passage say to us, to our congregation and beyond? We listen, we share, we agree, we disagree, we respect each other. Being a part of the Glimpse of the Gospel has enriched and grown my faith.”
“The "Glimpse" is my time before the Sunday service to explore the Gospel reading for that day. What I love is the comfort level I feel in this group to share
my thoughts, ask questions, and always to expand my understanding.”
“Glimpse of Gospel allows us all to share and explore the challenges to Christian living as we attempt to follow and live by the teachings of Jesus.”
If you are interested you can just show up on a Sunday morning. It is also possible to participate via Zoom. It may be that you would like to join, but the time doesn’t suit. We would like to know this, so we could explore starting another group at an alternative time.
Questions? Contact Tom Dewing, email st.dewing@verizon.net or 508-255-2656.

Thanks to all of you, this year's Rummage Sale (with the new Estate Items Room) was a huge success.
You donated an abundance of outstanding rummage and estate items, and you brought an incredible enthusiasm and cheerfulness with you to your volunteer shifts.
This year's sale may have broken both revenue and attendance records, but the real measurement of its success was the bounty of new friendships and the deep sense of community created. In addition, we were able to send the Family Table Collaborative a generous check for a portion of the proceeds.
We're already starting to plan for the 2025 Rummage Sale so it's not too soon to begin putting things aside, especially for the Estate Items Room.
Our thanks again,
Brian Schnetzer and (the amazing Rummage Sale Committee) Meg Nemitz, Suzy Gray, John Harter, Gail Binney Sterne, Priscilla Isner, Rich Gregory, Celia Calhoun

BEWARE OF A NEW MEDICARE CARD PHONE SCAM
Do you know what isn't new this year? Your Medicare card!
Medicare beneficiaries are NOT receiving new cards this year,
but scammers may try to convince you otherwise. For example, scammers may falsely tell you that Medicare is issuing new cards—perhaps a card that is plastic or metal, or a card that has a chip in it.
Here are some red flags to be aware of:
- Unsolicited calls from someone claiming to be from Medicare or Medicare Providers.
- Anyone needing your information so that they can send you an updated Medicare card.
- Anyone claiming that your card is expiring and that you will be charged a fine if you do not get a new one.
- Anyone stating that Medicare is issuing new cards and you need to verify your number or any information that is on your card.
Hang up if you answer... these people are pros... they sound legit... Keep your information safe! JUST HANG UP... or don't answer unrecognized phone calls.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS
All photos by Ann Pike-Paris
| |
PLEASE NOTE: Our campus will be closed Monday 6/3 through Wednesday 6/5, weather permitting, for resurfacing of the parking lots.
Re-striping will occur at night and will be dry the next day.
If you need to visit the church on these days,
park on Monument Road (on church side) or on Pilgrim Terrace.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Building & Grounds is happy to report the condenser farm and associated air handlers at the Parish Hall have been replaced.
The hills are alive!! Yes, right here at CHS! Be sure to look up above the playground to see the 60+ bearberries planted by Peter Jensen & Lynn Van Norman. (photo included)
The flowerpots are shining! Thanks to Russ Karber and the Coles, these are mended, painted and planted. Check the main entrance to the church. (photo below) The Memorial Garden wall has been repainted as a first step to improving this sacred space. Thanks to Roger Lovejoy, it has been weeded, and to Meredith Perkins for trimming the shrubs (see before & after shots).
The playground is getting much needed repairs to its railings to keep it safe.
Our May Garden Party was held on Saturday, May 18th with Carol Baffi-Dugan, Roger Lovejoy, Meredith Perkins & sister, and Ann Pike-Paris. Despite the drizzle and chill, the rectory stairway is almost entirely weed free, the Memorial Garden is minus its weeds, and the grasses next to the dumpster were trimmed and the invasives removed.
Be sure to see Meredith’s work at the door to the left of the Parish Hall. Thank you all for the great effort!
We continue to manage the grounds with our volunteers.... so if you can spare 30 minutes, an hour, whatever, on a Saturday any time, any day, please be in touch with Ann Pike-Paris!
Next Garden Party is June 15th, 9-12 noon.

GARDEN PARTY DISCOVERIES
Saturday, May 18
During our soggy workday we had a couple neat discoveries.
First, an egg. Roger found it under a bush so that, to us, looked completely impossible for anything to get in and lay this egg. We left it and won't disclose the area, so that it remains undisturbed.
Second, Ann was cutting down and cleaning the area near the dumpster that had four large grasses needing a good trim. When she turned around to put her clippers down what she saw on top of a hidden rock was a cross!! Ann shared... "Totally accidental, trust me, and it's still there. How does that happen!"
I think we get spiritual messages all the time... we just have to be open and watch for them to show up!

CO-SPONSORED HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
HOUSE IN BREWSTER UPDATE
| |
|
The Habitat build continues to make progress. CHS has a team workday on May 21 to work on flooring. Bob Collins continues making the bookcases and the Quilters continue finishing the five quilts to be presented to the family, one for each member. Completion of the house is expected late summer or early fall and a dedication service held.
Millard Fuller conceived of Habitat, in the mid 1960’s, as an expression of faith acted in service. His book, The Theology of the Hammer, is based on the Judeo-Christian tradition that “we do more than just talk about faith and sing about love; we must put faith and love into action to make them real.”
Still today, Habitat combines physical work with spiritual reflection. Each workday at
10 am, there is a break for volunteers to gather in a circle for snacks and devotions. CHS devotion leaders are: Brooke-Eaton Skea, Meg Nemitz, Liz Tunney, Bill Heuss, Doug Fromm and Celia Calhoun, coordinator.
Enjoy these photos of the home's progress taken by Celia Calhoun.

At our Sunday service on May 19th, Patrick spoke of the activities of our Outreach Committee. Our special guest, Hadley Luddy, CEO of Homeless Prevention Council explained the wonderful work HPC has done for many years helping homeowners at risk to stay in their homes.
At the coffee hour following the service, we hosted eighteen charitable agencies to which we contribute funds and provide other assistance. This celebration was delayed due to the pandemic, and it was obvious to all that we were anxious to have our partners back.
The Parish Hall was filled with many attractive displays, and our guests and parishioners enjoyed discussing the work being done in support of the needy on Cape Cod.
Read here about these special organizations.

The CHS Gallery exhibit for the month of June is the
work of Margaret MacKenzie, former Holy Spirit member.
The exhibit is curated by Margaret's granddaughter Pia MacKenzie
Margaret MacKenzie Exhibit
By Pia MacKenzie
When my mother died last year, I found several of my grandmother’s hooked rugs carefully stored in her house. They are not in super condition after all these years, but you can still see the beauty of her work. This show is a tribute to Margaret (Peg) MacKenzie’s genius. Her rugs are unique. She was an artist in wool, an amazing teacher, gifted gardener and a Christian whose faith cost her and sustained her throughout her life. She nurtured my faith from a young age.
Clyde and Margaret MacKenzie were among the first members of the Church of the Holy Spirit back in the 1930s. They have left their mark on the spirit of the church, buildings, and gardens in many ways from boxwood and perennial plants started as cuttings from Peg’s garden to the memorial doors dedicated to my grandfather by Vernon Smith.
I remember coming out of church after the service with her, on a June morning. Dressed in the silk Chinese style dress she made in a sewing class, her gold lame high heels and gold hairnet, she would stoop down and start weeding while still saying good morning to the rector.
At church events, Clyde was famous for his clam chowder and Peg for her orange peel cakes, cookies and pies. She sold her beach plum jelly in the galley west.
Peg and Clyde owned and ran the Sunset Tearoom, in an old house (the oldest in Orleans according to the photographer Cummings) on Namskaket Rd for 20+ years starting in 1926. She started hooking rugs the first Winter they owned the tearoom, when she discovered that the previous owner had taken all the rugs in the house with her.
Hooked rugs became her passion, leading to a business “Skaket Designs’ selling not only her rugs but also her designs printed on burlap for other ‘hookers’, teaching classes, being interviewed in papers and even being hired to appraise Rose Kennedy’s rug collection. She wrote articles on rugs, won awards in shows, is mentioned in books on rug hooking, and gave lectures at various associations. In the 1960s she wrote a column for the Oracle Newspaper, on gardening, rugs, books and life in Orleans called “The Gal Next Door”.
In the front room of the old house, (traditionally the ‘borning room’) my grandmother would sell gifts she and her daughter Harriet made during the Winter: painted tins, painted china head dolls, linoleum cut prints, beach plum jelly, and hooked rugs and chair covers among many other kinds of treasures. I have included a few of her painted tins in the exhibit including one made for my grandfather one Christmas, “Clyde’s Tobacco’.
My idea in planning this show was to share the beauty of her work and a bit of the history of our church.

SUNDAY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP | |
We continue our discussion of The Fractured Kingdom by Jean-Pierre Isbouts (2023) Here's a description:
Brilliantly tracing Jesus’s vision for the 'Kingdom of God' from its origin up through modern times, Dr. Isbouts leads us to a possible antidote for the fiercely partisan moment in which we find ourselves: the Our Father. Then taking readers on a historically exhilarating tour of the Lord’s Prayer, The Fractured Kingdom shows us why the only doctrine Christians agree on might be our last hope for forging a more equal, compassionate, and loving society. What results is an eminently readable and undeniably essential work that addresses some of the most pressing issues now confronting communities of faith around the world.
This book has also been recommended by Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry.
Please join our discussion on Sundays after the service, or after the program following the service. We meet in the Fireplace Room. If you would prefer to join us on Zoom, please contact Brooke Eaton-Skea. Thank you!

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand.
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
