The Story in the Shards
Earlier this spring, while Roger and I were having a look at the vernal pool on the northern edge of the church lot, he spotted something glinting in the mud. A minute of focused digging revealed what was to become a weekslong project for him: a forgotten refuse dump.
He has spent hours since digging in the mud, and his haul has been surprising: shards of Blue Willow crockery, discarded metalware bracelets and aluminum sheets from the Kimball Craft House, a metal bed pan, a pair of woman’s sunglasses, a blue Christmas bulb, a goat’s horn, jars from the days when Noxema and marshmallow fluff were still sold in stamped glass.
I find myself moved and intrigued by the objects he has unearthed and cleaned for display this coming Sunday, when we mark 90 years of continuing worship here. Was Richard Kimball a Fluff fan? Whose dissatisfaction resulted in this pretty bracelet’s discarding? How could people rationalize tossing their refuse into the mud at the edge of a vernal pool?
We live today in a kind of continuing intimacy with those, long dead, who have worshipped here over nine decades. And yet we are different. We have a different understanding of our environment’s fragility and sustainability. Our evolving conceptions of racial equity, gender and identity, are, I pray, broader and more generous than those held by our forebears – and I pray for the work of the Spirit in widening these more and more after our own time has passed and our successors are worshipping here decades from now.
Shards tell a story, don’t they? And the ultimate purpose of any history lesson, perhaps, is not the superior and advantaged judgment of our ancestors but the growth in the Spirit that their experiences, accomplishments, naivete, and often horrifying and victimizing actions afford us.
“I still have many things to say to you,” says a soon-to-depart Jesus to his disciples (John 16:12), “but you cannot bear them now.” What he said to his beloved then, and says to us, his beloved, now, is that salvation history is a gradual reveal. May the Spirit continue to open our minds and hearts to the power of God’s love, now and in all the years to come.
Birthday blessings, Church!
Faithfully and fondly,
Patrick

Wow! What a wonderful joyous wedding of our Rector, Patrick Ward, and his now husband, Roger Lovejoy, last Saturday, May 20th, and a splendid parish celebration on Sunday, May 21st. Thank you to everyone who helped make the wedding and the parish reception so amazing. Our many guests remarked upon the beauty of the campus and the hospitality with which they were treated. And, both Roger and Patrick were truly overwhelmed by our gift of two Kemp Pottery wine goblets made with sand from Nauset Beach and a generous purse! Thank you all!
A few weeks ago we held a very successful (by all measures) Rummage Sale. The work that goes into sorting all the donated items was enormous – thank you to all who donated and all who sorted and priced and thank you to the many volunteers on the sale days who made it all go so smoothly. Thanks to those who provided a delicious lunch on Friday and, the clean-up team had extra work to do this year to get all the leftovers out of the Parish Hall and under a tarp and tent, so that the work on refinishing the Parish Hall floor could go ahead on schedule -- and doesn’t the floor look great!
We had a great turnout for the May Garden Party which got the grounds looking as spick and span as possible for the wedding. Gallery West Art Gallery opened their first show of the year with a well-attended reception. Please take the opportunity on Sundays to walk in and see the beautiful artwork on display from local community artists.
Now we move forward into Pentecost Sunday and our 90th Anniversary. Please come and join us for “Beating the Bounds” and a festive cookout, details elsewhere in Together. As Patrick says, it won’t be a party unless you are there!
The Vestry meeting this month started with delicious, sweet offerings from various officers to welcome visitors Tom Dewing and Doug Fromm who reported on the Habitat for Humanity (H4H) project, which is beginning at last. Doug presented his document on how this project started, with $50,000 being assigned to it back in 2019, and with the hope that we could fund an H4H build in Orleans. There are no builds happening in Orleans, so we have chosen to co-sponsor a project in Brewster. The preparation work is beginning and the part where we can participate, with the wall-raising and the rest of the building work, is scheduled to start in the fall of this year. So, watch this space for opportunities to volunteer on this project and to help a family build a home for themselves. Tom and Doug will be co-chairing this project.
The Vestry discussed at length some maintenance projects which cannot wait: re-carpeting the office area, replacing the split-rail fencing along Monument Road, providing some much-needed maintenance to the Kimball Craft House--insulation and improved electrical panel, and replacing one of the four Parish Hall boilers which has developed a crack, totaling almost $40,000. Part of the split-rail fencing may be funded by the Grounds budget.
The Rector and Wardens are working on forming a Nominating Committee to be presented to the June Vestry Meeting. Work is progressing on the new sign at the crossroads, thanks to Susan Hitchcock. The Task Force on Communications Strategy is being renamed Process Management Committee, and the membership may change as this evolves. Discussion on Invite Welcome Connect will commence in June led by Cynthia Murray, Earle Bailey and Patrick.
Thank you all for your prayers and continued support!
See you all on Pentecost Sunday in church, on our guided walk, and at the barbecue! And please wear RED!
Prayerfully,
Celia Calhoun and Brenda Ridgeway

I see many new ladies in the congregation each Sunday, and I want you to know that Ladies Luncheon is held on the first Thursday of most months and is open to all.

A HUGE thanks to all who donated hours of work to our Rummage Sale. You sorted, folded, and hung piles of clothing, carried boxes galore, priced dozens of items, cooked and served lunch to volunteers, and worked as able cashiers on Friday and Saturday. The cleanup effort on Saturday was a sight to behold…teamwork at its best.
The remains have found their way to Snow Library, Katy’s Corner and the Salvation Army. We will be donating a portion of the proceeds to World Central Kitchen (wck.org) which provides meals in response to humanitarian, climate and community crises.
Hope you enjoy the photos below. The community enjoyed the treasures they found, and we all had a wonderful time being together!

BUILDINGS and GROUNDS
Brian Ridgeway and Ann Pike-Paris
| |
As we approach our 90th birthday, B&G, with the approval of the vestry, is planning to complete four projects aimed to beautify our campus and improve our buildings.
In alignment with our mission to restore and renew our wonderful gift from God, we are embarking on the following repairs and upgrades to CHS.
Project - Administration Building floor covering replacement.
- Rationale – Current material is well worn, torn, and unsightly.
- Work scheduled mid-June.
Project – Campus split rail fence.
- ·Replace 470’ of pressure treated split rail fencing along Monument Rd.
- Salvageable posts and rails will be stored for future use.
- Work scheduled July
Project – Our Historic Kimball House
- Inspection of basement reveals falling-down insulation and past mice presence.
- CC Insulation will remove old insulation and mice droppings, install 3” closed cell foam on all outside walls down to ground, cover with thermal barrier over foam, cover ground with 6 mil poly vapor-barrier, and put 2” Thermax on hatch.
- This will stop vermin and cold air from penetrating the Kimball work room reducing heating costs and making a better environment for our hard-working and creative artists.
Project - Parish Hall Boiler #1
- Ongoing inspections reveal a crack in boiler #1 and past evidence of rust below on concrete floor indicating leakage in the recent past. Both South Shore and Winslow indicated it is past its intended life and should be replaced before next heating season.
- Work is scheduled for early June.
THANK YOU to all who helped guarding our parish hall floors as they were refinished
mid-May. They look spectacular and were finished just in time for a special wedding and our 90th birthday celebration.

A fantastic Garden Party was held on May 13th with record turnout!
Fifteen wonderful volunteers weeded, raked, mulched and deadheaded the entire campus. Among them, our very own Rector, Patrick, and Roger! They came complete with freshly baked blueberry muffins, pitchers of cold water and sunscreen! They set a high bar for next month! And if you notice clean benches and bird-baths around the campus, thank Roger!
Should you notice green hoses strung around the SOS project, we’re dealing with the lack of rain with these sprayer hoses. All the hard work and efforts by Susan Hitchcock, Meredith Perkins and Chuck Dow needs some help as Mother Nature hasn’t really been too helpful in the rain department! Be sure to look for the sign created by Susan.
The Memorial Garden will also have a new sign this month. Painting of the walls will commence once a color choice is finalized, and weather allows.
A huge shout out to the Kimball Guild for the creation of labels for all our incredible specimen trees. Keep a lookout to see if you find these later in May. A map will be forthcoming.
Thank you for the love and caring for our grounds this month:
Chuck Dow, Susan Hitchcock, Meredith Perkins, Nancy Boccia, Brian Skea, David Blanchet, Ike & Fay Cole, Roger Lovejoy, Sarah & Rich Gregory, Diana Crighton, Cheryl Kyle, Celia Calhoun, and Carol Baffi-Dugan!

It is hard to believe that Federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Declaration ended this month on May 11.
We’ve all noticed a relaxation of masking policies in public places, even in medical settings. Those of us who work or have worked in health care wondered if this day would ever come or would always masks at work!
Check out the CDC link below to see what will remain available (vaccines, treatments, testing) and what will change (data reporting). We all grieve the countless losses suffered during the COVID pandemic. And we also are so glad to see everyone’s smiling faces again. Stay well!
CDC guidelines:
Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines. Maintain ventilation improvements.
Avoid contact with people who have suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
Follow recommendations for isolation if you have suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
Follow recommendations for what to do if you are exposed to someone with COVID-19.
If you are at high risk of getting very sick, talk with a healthcare provider about additional prevention actions.
People may choose to mask at any time. People with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a high-quality mask or respirator when indoors in public.
If you are immunocompromised, learn more about how to protect yourself.”

This month we are featuring Homeless Prevention Council (HPC)
HOMELESS PREVENTION COUNCIL'S
5th ANNUAL WALK FOR HOME
Saturday June 10th
in Provincetown & Chatham
The Homeless Prevention Council has been a longstanding organization supported by CHS through our Outreach Ministry. Our own dear Freddie Fitzgerald was a very active member of HPC and walked the walk many years.
If you would like to create your own team, or just make a donation to this wonderful organization, the HPC website has all the information you need.
5th Annual Walk for Home (onecause.com)
Since 1991, HPC, (Homeless Prevention Council), has served more than 50,000 clients. Last year alone, HPC’s dedicated case workers were honored to assist 2360 clients which included 837 adults, 723 children, 610 seniors and 190 young adults. In addition, HPC helped people within 1078 households remain in their homes. Two of HPC’s major annual events, the student backpack program and the holiday gift program saw significant increases. 327 school backpacks filled with school necessities were distributed, an increase of 15% from the previous year and 481 children received gifts and clothing during the holiday event, a 13% increase from prior year.
HPC’s case workers assist our neighbors in the following areas:
1. Providing access to housing programs and funding
2. Providing budgeting guidance and assistance
3. Providing networks of community resources
4. Providing access to job training and educational resources
5. Assisting in the application for fuel assistance.
The work that HPC performs is direly needed in our community.
By walking with one of the teams, creating your own team,
or by making a donation you will help HPC help so many more.

NAUSET INTERFAITH ASSOCIATION | |
"Working together for the common good of our wider community, especially the poor, oppressed and marginalized.” - Articles of Organization, NIA
Holy Spirit is one of the six founding congregations of the Nauset Interfaith Association in response to the tragedy of 9-11-2001. NIA now has 24 member congregations representing many different Christian denominations as well as Unitarians, Jews and Muslims living on Cape Cod.
There are several members of our congregation who are active in NIA, but we would love to have more! Besides our main NIA body which sponsors several events each year we have several action teams:
- One working to help homeless and at-risk high school students go to college (Youth Outreach Hospitality Action Team).
- One working to heal institutional racism on Cape Cod (Martin Luther King Action Team) with several separate sub-groups working with our Cape teachers, a sharing group with police chiefs, and reforming our laws regarding correctional institutions.
- One reaching out to asylum and refugee families on Cape Cod (Refugee Support Action Team). They have had a supportive relationship with the NTumba family from the Democratic Republic of Congo where Tony and Joelle were arrested and tortured because of Tony’s Photojournalism work for the United Nations exposing corruption in his native DRC.
We also are trying to get an Environmental Justice Action Team going again to work with other environmental groups on Cape Cod, so it will still be here for our grandchildren!
Here are some parishioners who are active and or supportive of NIA’s work on the Cape and beyond: Brooke Eaton-Skea, Nancy Ludewig, Page McMahan, Robyn McLaughlin, Jay Haun, and myself. I would be glad to talk with anyone interested in NIA. You can call me at 413-478-5719 or ksbcampbell5050@gmail.com. Thank you!

Watch over thy children, O'Lord, as their days increase.
Bless and guide them wherever they may be
keeping them unspotted from the world.
Strengthen them when they stand.
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall.
And in their hearts, may thy peace, which passes all understanding,
Abide all the days of their lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
