A Message from Patrick

On the PB

Since my ordination in 2009, we Episcopalians have had three radically differing personalities as presiding bishop.

Katherine Jefferts Schori (2006-2015) was the first woman ever elected to the office. Among her many gifts and contribution was, I believe, a particular focus on environmentalism as an urgent theological issue. Her leadership helped us reframe our understanding of “this fragile earth, our island home” and our place on it.

A number of us in the parish have had the opportunity to meet the ebullient and charismatic Michael Curry (2015-2024). “If it’s not about love, it’s not about God,” are the words I think of when I think of him. Curry – the first African American to serve as “PB” – is one of the most disarming and inviting leaders I’ve ever met.

The Church will always need the energy and the cagey, courageous faith these two offered in their terms. In these past months I have been curious about our new presiding bishop, Sean Rowe. And I like what I am beginning to see. He eschewed the National Cathedral for his installation and opted for a pared-down liturgy at the National Church Headquarters in New York. His guidance to parish priests like me to keep sermons to ten minutes may be a tall order for those of us on the voluble end of the spectrum – and it’s guidance that evidences his wider concern on what is happening weekly in our parishes.

While Jefferts Schori’s and Curry’s were “historic” elections, the “historic” element of Rowe’s tenure will have to do less with his identity than with the particular challenges Americans of faith are facing right now in our shared effort to live out the good news.

I am deeply thankful, as an example, for Presiding Bishop Rowe’s courage in navigating new federal guidelines on immigration. I strongly encourage you to read further HERE. Rather than comply with new executive branch orders that white South African Afrikaners be granted singular priority in admission to our country, Presiding Bishop Rowe has opted to end our national church’s reliance on Federal Aid for our immigrant support ministries. He understands that compliance with such guidelines is not defensible for those taking their baptismal vows seriously. Faithful ministry, simply put, costs.

As news coverage of ICE raids on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket this week attests, both documented and undocumented neighbors are living in fear. And while national immigration policy certainly needs reform, “the dignity of every human person” which our baptisms affirm precludes disregard for those whom federal policy would forsake. In a dark week, our “PB” ‘s guidance offers me genuine hope and a refreshed sense of purpose – and I hope it offers the same to you.

Faithfully,

Wardens' Report

The dominating feature of this past month was the Rummage Sale, which was a tremendous success, in all ways! Thanks to the co-chairs, Brian Schnetzer, Suzy Gray, Meg Nemitz, and their team of some 80 volunteers! The donations filled the Parish Hall and the front lawn. The Fireplace Room and alcove were overflowing with estate items. On Friday Patrick and Steve Coombs prepared a delicious lunch for the volunteers. It was nice to sit and enjoy a meal together before the beginning of the sale. Thank you to everyone who was involved in some way with the Rummage Sale.

We've welcomed Patrick and Roger back from their vacation in Spain, so it’s back to work: the Vestry meeting for May was held on Tuesday, May 27 (too late to have a report for Together.) We will revert to our new normal schedule of meeting on the third Tuesday of June, the 17, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. We have much to catch up on in those meetings: activities resulting from our Mutual Ministry Review at our March Retreat and discussion of the report from Brian Raiche of Cornerstone Fundraising and what they recommend for our potential capital fundraising program. All good serious topics for focused discussion!

The first Neighborhood Tables (winter session) have completed their gatherings, and the organizing task force (Dianne Fromm, Cynthia Murray and Celia Calhoun) received about 40 names for re-shuffled groups to run through the summer (June through September). If you signed up, you should by now have received an email from your hosts for the first gathering - Enjoy!

And last, but definitely NOT least, please join us on Sunday, June 29, when our Diocesan Bishop, The Right Rev. Julia Whitworth, will be visiting us.

We hope to shed sweatshirts very soon and start enjoying some warmth outside! Enjoy your gardens, those of you lucky enough to have them!

Thank you for your support and prayers,

Celia Calhoun & Priscilla Isner, Wardens

Outreach News

The Outreach Committee meets each month on the first Thursday of the month. They frequently host representatives from the organizations that CHS supports. Recently, Mairead Graf, Vice President of Development, at Cape Abilities, Inc. met with the members of the committee. Nancy Miller, Cape Abilities liaison, asked Mairead to share a few words about their programs with our readers...
"Cape Abilities has supported individuals with disabilities on Cape Cod for over 55 years. Their mission is to support individuals lead independent, meaningful lives through inclusive, community-based supports—now reaching over 350 individuals each year.
They operate 15 residential homes and a Day Habilitation Program in Hyannis, offering therapeutic activities and skill-building in safe, supportive settings. A fleet of 80 vehicles provides daily transportation to jobs, volunteer roles, and community events. Cape Abilities also partners with 40+ local businesses to create employment opportunities and offers one-on-one life skills training. Their Farm in Dennis and Thrift store in Yarmouth provide hands-on job training and meaningful work.
Cape Abilities is grateful for the ongoing support of the Church of the Holy Spirit and its Congregation. You can help build a more inclusive Cape Cod by volunteering, donating, or visiting the Farm or Thrift store- every action helps build a more inclusive Cape Cod." M. Graf

Food 4 Kids

Volunteer Sign Ups are Live!

"Giving your time to others can have profound effects on your mental and emotional health by creating a greater sense of social connection and purpose." - Dr. Nina Birnbaum

Come volunteer this summer to nourish local Cape kids - it's good for them and YOU. There are 1,035 volunteer slots from June 23 to August 29, 2025. There is sure to be an opportunity that fits your schedule across 49 days of operation. Visit the F4K website for details and SignUp links. Thanks to our ambitious and faithful volunteers, 37% of these were filled just two days after invitations went out, so don't delay.

We are doing a repeat of last year's Grab and Go at The Church of the Holy Spirit; an exclusive volunteer opportunity for 2 CHS parishioners to hand out lunches and books to local kids. This was a great way to meet other CHS members and interact with the broader community so don't hesitate to sign up yourself. Pick a date or regular schedule that works for you using this SignUp Genius link and password "F4K", or in-person during church coffee hour. If you choose to sign up in person at church, please understand that some reconciliation of online signups needs to take place, so we may need to come back to you with alternate dates.

Above: F4K staff members Julie Thompson and Chris Gray get ready for the parade.

Right: Our F4K bus decorated for the parade!

We had a blast during the Brewster in Bloom parade!

On May 4, Food 4 Kids Board members, volunteers, staff, friends, and supporters gathered to do a local Walk for Hunger. As a team we raised $7,700! Folks along the parade route expressed thanks for what we do, inquired about how they could get involved, and loved the squishy hamburgers and carrots the kids tossed out along the route.

None of this would have been possible without the tremendous effort of Julie Thompson and Ben Ballard. They had every detail nailed down and made sure we made a splash! So much so that we made the front cover of The Cape Cod Chronicle on May 5, and Cape Cod Times Social News on May 4. Joy Jordan made sure we were on social media, and Rich Weeks took some great shots of the team along the parade route.

You have until June 30 to help us reach our fundraising goal! Only $2,300 to go! 60% of funds raised go to Food 4 Kids, and 40% to Project Bread in the fight against hunger across the state of MA.

Church School News

May has come and gone so quickly... Several families attended a (middle and high school age) retreat and work weekend at the Barbara Harris camp in New Hampshire.  The group was led by Matt Thompson--youth group coordinator.

June 8th will be the last official Church school class for the summer. There will be a parish-wide picnic complete with grilled food following the Sunday service. Parishoners are asked to sign up to donate a side dish of their choice. Sign ups will be available outside the parish hall on Sunday.

Soar and Explore--a book-based curriculum involving current picture books loosely tied to weekly readings in the Bible. These readings are followed by art experiences--supported by artists in our community and led by Ruth Campbell. We will begin on July 6th.

Church School Resumes on September 21st! Have a grand summer!

Sunday Book Discussion Group

On April 27, the Book Discussion Group will begin to discuss Patriot, the autobiography of Alexei Navalny.

Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come.

“This book is a testament not only to Alexei’s life, but to his unwavering commitment to the fight against dictatorship—a fight he gave everything for, including his life. Through its pages, readers will come to know the man I loved deeply—a man of profound integrity and unyielding courage. Sharing his story will not only honor his memory but also inspire others to stand up for what is right and to never lose sight of the values that truly matter.” —Yulia Navalnaya

Patriot is currently available at local bookstores.

We meet on Sundays in the Fireplace room after the service. Please join us!

Evening Book Gathering

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, June 16 at 5:30 at the home of the Ridgeway's in Eastham. New members are welcome! Please email Cheryl Kyle, cherylkyle@aol.com for additional information.

A light dinner will be served with discussion to follow. Please bring your own beverage. This month we are reading Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man in South Africa.

Ladies Luncheon

It’s a real pleasure to see so many people having such lively conversations around our tables at Ladies Luncheon. Come join us. There is always room for more.

We meet in the Parish Hall about 11:45, in time for a little conversation before we sit down at 12:00. We bring our own sandwich or salad, and the rest is provided.

Our volunteers for June 5th are as follows: chips, Arlene Barrett; paper goods, Gail Binney Stern; table decorations, Joannie Barnes; juice/tea, Fay Cole; dessert, Brenda Ridgeway.

Buildings & Grounds

Have you seen the Memorial Garden lately?

For years, our Memorial Garden has been a work in progress. Some years back, we had an invasion of voles who devoured many of our long established shrubs along the outside walls. Then, Covid prohibited us from any work on the campus awhile. Lastly, we awaited our new Rector for his direction. This brings us to the present...

As a sacred space, our rector has final say over what is done. And now, thanks to Patrick, Meredith Perkins and Peter Jensen, new life has been breathed into this lovely area.

A design was established to prevent the constant erosion of soil along the side walls. Peter began a soil healing process which is well underway, and very selective plant material will eventually be installed. Then, with all our remaining plant material overgrown, Meredith began a restoration and reclaiming of the rest of the areas. Among the many changes, you can now see the walls on the right of the stairway, thanks to heavy pruning. Due to a mother bird and her babies, there is one area that will wait for trimming until the birds have fledged! And of course, thanks to Ike Cole for his ever vigilant care of the fountain.

So, if you haven’t taken a stroll down there, please do. Have issues with stairs? Well, you can access the gardens by taking the elevator from the front door to the lower level and walk or wheel out to the gardens.

Finally, we really need your help with overall TLC of our grounds. If you can donate even an hour, any day of the week, please contact Ann Pike-Paris. There’s always work to be done--standing, seated or kneeling, whatever works for you!

Next Garden Party: Saturday, June 14th, 9-12.

Thank you to Russell Karber and J & J Flatwork for designing and building a beautiful, safe, and secure new stairway with railings.

See you around the campus,

Anne Pike-Paris & Brian Ridgeway

Good Friday Walk

Our walk is over and intake is winding down. I am happy to report that our 40th year of honoring Jesus on Good Friday and raising funds for special needs kids has once again been a success!! Through your generosity and sharing, one dozen families will be aided financially this year.

Once again, you have my heartfelt thanks and gratitude!! To all who donated, who walked with us, who volunteered and worked with us, or who wished us well and offered up prayers, I thank you! You are the United People for Kids, and without you, the Good Friday Walk would not be.

Two of the families joined us this year for the Walk. One mom and her kids even volunteered to work three of the stations on the walk to make sure the walkers stayed on the trail. The other mom who attended the Walk with her three kids, called me aside to tell me that her youngest daughter had made me a gift. This young girl, who had been diagnosed with Autism at age three, had taken up the art of quilling, fabricating with strips of curled paper. I was overwhelmed when she handed me this gift of incredible beauty and craftmanship!! (See photo at right.)

I thank God for this opportunity, and I thank all of you for making it a reality. God’s Special Blessing and Peace to my Holy Spirit Family…

CHS Gallery

The featured artist for the month of June is Susan McDormand. Her amazing show is titled PAINTINGS! Susan’s art can also be seen in Galley West Art Gallery.

"I hope you enjoy these oil paintings, usually enhanced with cold wax, or walnut oil, or newly discovered oil derived from lavender-scented spikes. Painted almost entirely with the fingers of my non-dominant hand, they perhaps fall happily between abstraction and representation.

Each wears a low price tag, as they are looking to be out of the drawers of a cold metal flat file and into a cozy corner of your home. You may hang "as is" or frame under glass (not necessary, though). Because I've been painting over 25 ears, they have lots of friends to 'hang with'!"
