Trying It Out Together: Sunday End-of-Day Worship
Since coming to Holy Spirit I've been delighted to hear so many opinions about our weekend worship schedule. Some miss the pre-COVID offering of a Saturday afternoon service. While most cherish hymnody and sung prayers, a persisting subset -- as in many Episcopal churches -- prefers worship primarily spoken. Some parishioners, for medical reasons, find mornings challenging. Another cohort, surveying our full-ish nave and parking lot on Sunday mornings, have urged me "not to change a thing...it's great that we are all together for one service."
Throughout our time together, we've understood that expansion of our weekend worship schedule would follow the hiring of a second priest. Now that Nancy Hagner is with us, it's time to try something new!
In the coming months, we will trial a service of Holy Eucharist at 5:00 pm, as Sunday afternoon ends. We will begin a three-month trial period for this service on Sunday, June 28 and conclude that trial on September 27. If a consistent community convenes for worship over these weeks, we will continue the service into the fall and winter months, with a seasonal shift to 4:00 pm as the days shorten.
The Church of the Holy Spirit is actually the first church I've served without a late-day Sunday service. I love the distinct mood and context of worship at this time of day, and I hope you will find an opportunity to be with us.
Liturgically, our first model for the service will be something that has already been succeeding consistently: our Thursday 11:00 am service of Holy Eucharist. Sited in the East Transept (adjacent to our Reception Room Gallery), Thursday morning worship welcomes a steady group of between 14 and 18, with occasional visitors. It includes a short homily versus a full sermon and lasts approximately 35 minutes.
As with any church ministry, responsibility for success relies on a community assuming responsibility and care. If lectoring, ushering or serving at Eucharist or on altar guild for this new liturgy appeals to you, please let me know and we will incorporate you into our planning. Nancy and I are excited to wade into this new service with you, learning from it, and reflecting upon it with you once we have had the experience together for some weeks.

Glimpse of the Gospel
‘Glimpse’ meets in the Fireplace Room on Sunday mornings at 8:45. Participants are sent a copy of the readings from scripture for the Sunday service earlier in the week to give opportunity for reading, reflecting, and inwardly digesting beforehand.

It is a wonderful thing to find a spiritual home, something we certainly have here at The Church of the Holy Spirit. It all begins and is rooted in our worship services. But then, to have a community of fellow parishioners, working to live out our faith together, makes it even more wonderful.
The Rummage Sale on May 1 and 2 was one of those events that ties us together in community. A lot of work! A lot of sorting, pricing, storing, publicizing….and all that before we opened the doors! Many tasks that again connected us with purpose and a way to reach out to others in our town and beyond. And besides that, we had fun! Such deep thanks go to Brian Schnetzer, Suzy Gray and Meg Nemitz for organizing us and seeing it through, including long days after the event. Whew! It was an amazing financial success for our outreach partners, but even more, a way we were able to show how we “love one another”…and our community. Well done, CHS!

The regular meeting of the Vestry took place Tuesday evening, May 19. Betty Suracci led the group in devotions, lifting up St. Dunstan and his ministry. There were two visitors. Director Jenn Gale, updated the group on Food 4 Kids, which is registering volunteers and off to a big start on June 29. Rev. Anne Koehler reported on the research going into a CHS transition to a new data base. The new program will happily be more thorough and efficient for all users.

Wednesday, June 24 at 7 pm. Join us for a talk and book signing by activist, author and Third Act founder Bill McKibben. Since publishing The End of Nature in 1989, Bill has been a leading voice in educating the public about the climate crisis.
Bill will be speaking from his two mst recent books: The Flag, The Cross and the Station Wagon (A Graying American Looks Back at His Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened) and Here Comes the Sun: a Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization.

Summer choir opportunity
The choir invites any interested singers to join them at 9:00am Sundays to “try out” this fun and important ministry! We do not have weeknight rehearsals mid-June through September but still provide leadership every week, so it’s a “come and learn” event on Sunday mornings. If interested, let Joan or the office know, so we can have music ready for you. We welcome all voice parts, male or female, and you can join us for one week or several months! The most important requirement is enthusiasm. We will be singing a variety of anthems exploring the heritage of American music, from spirituals to folk hymns to gospel. Come help us lead worship and celebrate our country’s birthday in song!

Organ recital in Yarmouth
The Cape Cod chapter of the American Guild of Organists is sponsoring a recital at Thatcher Hall (formerly the Swedenborgian Church of the New Jerusalem) to celebrate the return of the building’s historic pipe organ from restoration. Several area organists, including our own Joan Kirchner, will present a variety of music in this beautiful space. Thatcher Hall is located on Rt. 6A at the Village Green in Yarmouth Port. The concert will be held on Monday, June 8 at 5:30 pm.

The Cape and Islands Deanery May meeting was held at CHS on Thursday, May 28. Before the meeting, representatives from our sister churches were invited to visit the Kimball Gallery and Gallery West, as well as receive a guided art tour of our beloved church. A light supper of soup and sandwiches was served.
The program for the evening featured Spencer Hatcher, the Executive Director of the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center and Julie Lytle of the Amazing Grace Program. Both speakers were quite persuasive as they discussed the amazing benefits and needs of their respective programs.

What a busy year it has been!
We welcomed Katherine Mockett and Linda Mason into our church school family and have been so grateful for their time and thoughtful interactions with our youth!!
Our last Church School class will be Sunday, May 31st. We will finish class by entering church for Youth Recognition Sunday. Following this there will be a parish-wide indoor picnic! The church will provide burgers and hot dogs ( veggie options available) and parishioners can sign up for sides!
With the culmination of the year, we have some announcements to share. These four seniors will be graduating from high school this June and headed off to--

The church school is also pleased to share our art with YOU! We will be displaying our mixed media art in the Church Gallery for the month of June. This is work that all the students have created individually throughout the year.
Even though Church School is ending for the year... never fear... Ruth Campbell has begun her effort for summer SOAR AND EXPLORE to begin again!
Artists and children will mix together in the parish hall where they will read together and create beautiful art. This offering will begin on Sunday, June 14. Thank you, RUTH !
We are so very grateful for every single family and youth that enters our church. They touch our lives and make us see life in new ways. They remind us to be gentle with each other and leave judgement behind! We believe that whether we see them every day or even if we haven't for a long while that the moments we share together help make us better for the future!

Since January, a group of thirteen CHS folks and friends of the parish have been meeting every other week for Sacred Ground dialogues. Through a series of documentary films, short videos, a set of readings, and passages from two assigned books, the group engages with each other in sensitive and respectful dialogue on race and racism.
Designed by the Episcopal Church for parishes like CHS, it provides a walk back through history, “peeling away the layers” of the untold history of Indigenous people, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, African American people, and those who come to America’s shores as immigrants. They'v come in search of the American Dream, only to be denied by culture, economics and government policies. Focusing on the work of white people to become sensitive to racism, dialogue participants are encouraged to recall and reflect on their own family histories and stories and how they are beneficiaries of “white supremacy” and what unintentional impact it has for race relations.
The current round will conclude on June 15 with an all day “retreat style session” and a sharing of “what comes next” as together, CHS moves closer to Becoming Beloved Community.

Diocesan Framework / Call to Action:
In her letter dated 2/23/26, Bishop Julia asks the diocesan community to “respond faithfully to this time of mendacity, state-sanctioned violence, and the erosion of democracy in our country.” Our committee has discussed how these four pillars can shape our work going forward:
- Provide: We seek to augment the outreach we as a parish are already doing by providing ‘boots on the ground’ opportunities for action and collaboration.

Public Witness: This pillar is about bearing witness: advocate, act, protest peacefully.

Protect: This pillar is about educating ourselves so that we can protect the vulnerable in our community.

Pray: This pillar reminds us that our efforts are shaped by our faith through prayer and action.
Committees: We have loosely formed three committees:
- Food Insecurity: We have revived a tradition of collecting food for the LCOC Food Pantry in Orleans, delivering monthly - please look for the collection bins in the church and the parish hall! Members: Mike Isner, Pia McKenzie, Nancy Haak
- Immigration & Democracy: We are supporting the efforts of the Nauset Interfaith Association’s Refugee Support Team. We are looking to inform ourselves of the ICE Protocols for Churches, learn about the ICE Watch and Hotline, form a safety team for peaceful protests, volunteer at Legal Aid offices, learn more about TPS: Immigrants with Temporary Protected Status and exploring a visit to the Burlington ICE Field office to bear witness. - Women & Children: This committee is looking at ways to support some of our current outreach partners. Members: Carol Richardson, Nancy Haak

After this year of reading and discussing a number of fascinating books, the majority of our core group has expressed an interest in, rather than starting a new book in June, taking a break for the summer. And so, we will begin to discuss Take This Bread by Sara Miles, in September. Date TBD.

Our first CHS Book Gathering of 2026 was a roaring success. CHS has many devoted readers who enjoy gathering for fellowship and discussion.

We will be discussing The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout. The author writes of personal and political loneliness in today’s USA, using the life of a good man, Artie Dam. The novel is short but every word matters.

It seems May has almost disappeared, but the beauty, and the weeds, of our grounds have not!Each year it amazes me to see the gifts we have arising from their winter sleep.
This year, with no major projects looming, I spent time looking at what has happened in the past 5-6 years. To that end, I’m sharing pictures of a few of our major projects: the banks near the parish hall and administration building and the stairs to the rectory. I hope you enjoy the history.
But, given we have just celebrated Memorial Day, I want to pay tribute to two veterans buried on our grounds. Sadly, there may be others, but these are the two I know of. To see their stones, take a walk along the Monument Road hillside, and you will see their two flags.

Our partnership with St. Christopher's Episcopal in Chatham is strengthening as we gear up for summer. We are training a group of St. Christopher's volunteers this summer in preparation to open a satellite Food 4 Kids kitchen at their location in 2027.
We are excited to have Julie Fleischman and Heidi Quill from St. C's taking the lead on the coordination, and Nancy Miller will be our host from CHS. A large group will be volunteering all day on July 15, so come by and say hello to any of your friends.

Building Strong Families for a Brighter Future
“Families are at the heart of everything we do at Cape Cod Children’s Place.” says Erin Sullivan, one of the coordinators at the Eastham-based program.
If you happened by CCCP’s display table at The Church of the Holy Spirit’s recent Outreach Fair in May, you would have caught the excitement from Erin, first-hand, about this unique family-support service. “Children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and encouraged. Our programs seek to build confidence and nurture emotional growth.”
CCCP’s brochure highlights its mission: "From parenting workshops to early childhood programs, we create spaces where caregivers feel supported, confident and connected. Whether families are formed by choice, chance, or circumstance, nurturing your relationships with your children is vital for their healthy family development."
Programs include activities and playgroups for families with young children; connecting other parents and caregivers in support groups who may be on a similar journey; education, coaching and advice to help address challenging behaviors are offered; and connection to community services are recommended when there are questions about where to find help.

The June Ladies Luncheon will be held on June 4th, and all ladies of the parish are welcome. This would be a good time to see if this is an activity you would like to add to your calendar. We meet in the Parish Hall about 11:45 am on the first Thursday of the month. We bring our own salad or sandwich, and the rest is provided.
Except for our support for A Baby Center, an outreach from our parish and from the Council of Churches, our sole purpose is to be in community. Come join us. Volunteers for June 4th are: Chips, Liz Tunney; Table Decorations, Joannie Barnes; Juice/Tea, Georgia Schneider; Dessert, Priscilla Isner.

The Church School is pleased to share their 2025 - 2026 artwork from both the Godly Play Class (ages 6 - 12 yrs), as well as the middle and high school class (12 -18 yrs).
The Godly Play Class will share personal collages inspired during their six weeks of Holy Eucharist Class. Material were supplied, and the process was guided by Pia Mackenzie. Also displayed will be individual drawings by the children based on the prompt -- "What God looks like to me".
The middle and high school class will share mixed media art worked on during the course of the year. These works are based on three prompts --
- How we see or feel God in the world around us (mixed media)
- Where we feel connected to God (etching)
- What we do to "show up" for God and humanity.

What a joy to see so many familiar and friendly faces at our Spring Show Reception! THANK YOU to all who have visited the gallery to see and enjoy our incredible variety of local art. From oil paintings to textile art, ceramics, photography, stained glass, sculpture and, of course, a gorgeous array of items by the Kimball Guild artisans, plus so much more; there’s truly something for everyone!

We want to extend a “heartfelt” thanks (no CPR pun intended!) to Brandon Henderson of the Orleans Fire & Rescue Squad, for his instruction and expertise during this month’s CPR Training!
Twenty-four of us gathered in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, May 12, to learn the latest guidelines on Hands-on CPR, use of the AED along with Choke Saver and Stop the Bleed instruction. Several parishioners are following up with Brandon to pursue 2-year certification. We are blessed to have Brandon and the OFD in community with us!
