Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
I have always known that Toledo is a welcoming and inclusive city. Now, the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index proves it.

In 2014, we scored 58 out of a possible 100 points on the index for our laws and policies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer residents. We were up to 89 last year but that still wasn't good enough for us. Akron, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton received perfect scores in 2017 and Cleveland scored 81. So we were behind our fellow big Ohio cities.

The index tracks factors such as employment policies, nondiscrimination laws, city services, and law enforcement relations for a city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer residents.

We released great news this week. Toledo now has a perfect score. We scored 103 out of 100. (Yes, we got three extra bonus points. ) This is an accomplishment that allows Toledo to showcase it is a culturally-diverse, welcoming, and inclusive city.
Art Tatum Day
Oct. 13 each year in Toledo will now be known as Art Tatum Day to celebrate the history, heritage, and legacy of one of the city’s most important and inspirational artists. Mayor Kapszukiewicz plans to make the declaration Saturday, Oct. 13 during For the Love of Art: - Art Tatum Birthday Celebration! at the Kent Branch Library.

The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in memory of the jazz legend. We celebrate the memory of his birthday with music, poetry, and light refreshments.

Tatum is known worldwide as “The Greatest Piano Player of All Time.” He was born in Toledo on Oct. 13, 1909 and was raised at 1123 City Park Avenue in the historic Dorr Street Corridor - the epicenter of African American life, heritage, and the arts.

Tatum attended Grace Presbyterian Church where he participated in the church choir. He was born with handicapped sight yet “perfect pitch” and excelled early on as a child musical prodigy.

Tatum’s talent was revered locally. In 1927, he began playing on WSPD radio, and by the age of 19, the pianist was playing on a regular basis at local clubs. After the WSPD radio show began rebroadcasting across the country in 1928, Tatum became a nationally known phenomenon attracting the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson, Joe Turner, and many others to Toledo to witness his performances. Tatum’s influence played a major role in cementing Toledo as a significant jazz center in the nation, attracting and producing world-class talent, inspiring numerous jazz clubs and music venues, and inspiring future generations through artistic legacy.

Tatum was Toledo’s preeminent talent, and has been an inspirational symbol of the city's rich history of African American artists and jazz musicians who achieved worldwide impact.
