Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz

I want to thank everyone for supporting Issue 15 at the polls this week. We are humbled and pleased it was so overwhelmingly approved by voters and we believe it passed by the largest margin of any issue on the ballot.
That is an affirmation that Toledoans believe in regionalism and are willing to give up a little power in order to keep our customers together. Issue 15 was another important step toward a regional water system that works for everyone and makes sure rates are affordable.
If we can establish a model on how we can cooperate as a region on water, then we use that same model on economic development, health, public transportation, and any other issues that are important to us as a region.
I want to wish all Toledoans who served in the military - and all veterans worldwide - a very happy Veterans Day. Many of us will never know the sacrifices it takes to wear the uniform, serve our nation in war or peace, be wounded in battle, or be away from family for months or years at a time. Veterans Day
is about celebrating the brave men and woman who answered the call and served our nation.
I represent grateful Toledoans who wish they could thank each of you personally.

The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department has been awarded an $820,991 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant from the Department of Homeland Security / Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The SAFER grant is intended to help fire departments increase staffing levels in order for them to respond to emergencies more effectively. Funding provided from the SAFER grant will allow our department to hire an additional six firefighters to the fire class that is scheduled to begin in February, 2019.
“I would like to thank Mayor Kapszukiewicz and city council for their support regarding the acceptance of the fire SAFER grant,” Fire Chief Brian Byrd said. "This grant allows us to add six additional firefighters to our department in a time when our run volume exceeds 60,000 incidents annually. When complete with their initial training, these six additional firefighters will bolster daily staffing and allow us to continue to provide the highest quality of fire/EMS service the citizens of Toledo have come to expect.”

Congratulations to Police Detective Sgt. Karrie Williams, the 2018 recipient of the TAPA Award for Outstanding Contribution and Achievement In Supply Chain Security and Enforcement in recognition and appreciation of her contributions in the furtherance of cargo theft investigations, outstanding investigative techniques, industry collaboration, initiative, and efforts exceeding expectations.
Sgt. Williams was nominated for the award by Alan Harris, manager of security for Synnex, after working a case that resulted in nearly $100,000 of stolen laptops being recovered.
"A fraudster successfully impersonated a computer reseller and fooled one of our salespeople," Mr. Harris said. "Some of the product was shipped to Toledo... Her speedy disposition of this is tribute to her understanding of urgency in these situations."

Rogers star Zia Cooke commits to South Carolina
Rogers High School girls basketball star Zia Cooke will continue her career next year at South Carolina. Cooke announced her decision Monday at a special gathering at the high school. Hers was the most highly anticipated college decision by a Toledo girls player, ending a recruiting process that included Division I offers from more than 60 college programs. She currently is ranked the No. 7 player in the country in class of 2019 by HoopGurlz. Under coach Dawn Staley, a Hall of Fame player, the Gamecocks won the national championship in 2017 and reached the Elite Eight a season ago. Staley’s credentials were one reason Cooke chose her destination.
Toledo Civic Hall of Fame adds five to the fold
The grandmother of a modern-day feminist icon and a legendary football coach are among the 2018 inductees to the Toledo Civic Hall of Fame. Former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner helped establish the Hall of Fame in 1998. Honorees must be deceased for at least two years and are selected unanimously by a 10-person committee.
Toledo Air Show to return in 2019
The Toledo Air Show will return in 2019, local officials announced. After a 12-year hiatus, the air show returned to Toledo Express Airport in 2016, and coordinators say they plan to keep the event in town on a three-year cycle. The air show is scheduled for July 13 and 14, and attendees can expect performances from high-profile aviators. Aircraft at the show will range from World War II planes to fifth-generation fighter jets, said retired Lt. Col. Mike Timbrook of the Toledo Air Show. The planning process for an air show takes between two and three years because many of the most in-demand demonstration teams book several years in advance.
Water rates key in determining who will join new Toledo-led commission
Now that Toledo voters have given city officials permission to form a new regional water commission, it’s time to figure out who all will participate. Toledo’s current water customers include Lucas County, Maumee, Perrysburg, Sylvania, Whitehouse, Fulton County, Monroe County, and the Northwestern Water and Sewer District. Several are studying whether they can get better service and rates by providers outside of Toledo. Ed Moore, Toledo’s public utilities director, said Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz’s plan to create the com
mission is the best option for everyone.
